Those Thelma Todd shorts are terrific. She didn't get foregrounded
often enough in features, so it's great to see her get the spotlight.
Watching a hottie like Todd do slapstick is a turn-on.

Incidentally, the shorts I'd like to see strung together are the So You
Want To's with Phyllis Coates as Mrs. McDoakes. (IMDb lists 22 of these.)
TCM slots one in now & then between movies, but how about a mini-fest?

Are those related to the "Joe McDoakes" shorts, with George "Jetson"
O'Hanlon?

TCM shows those occasionally, but the only one I've seen on disk was "So
You Want to Be a Detective" (the "Lady in the Lake" parody), on the
Warner "Treasure of Sierra Madre" disk.

The Joe McDoakes "So You Think You're a Nervous Wreck?" is on the
"Night in Casablanca" disc from the Marx Brothers MGM box set.

I wish there were a complete list of those McDoakes shorts on disc, as
well as the Pete Smith shorts. The Pete Smith "Quicker 'n a Wink" is
on the "Go West/Big Store" disc & "Ain't It Aggravatin'?" (which is
hilarious) is on "The Long, Long Trailer."

And I'd like to see a mini-fest of John Nesbitt's Passing Parade.

I always enjoyed those as a youth in the theatre. I'd really like
to see the one about Firestone again - that tickels a faint spot in
my memory.

The other series I liked in 'the old days' if you can call the
late-40s and early-50's the old days, is the March Of Time Series.

And you grew up to be a high school history teacher?

Those were precisely the ones that drove me out to the refreshment
stand. Along with Traveltalks and the 20-minute round-by-round replay of
the latest boxing match.

Nah. I wound up being a music director / disk jockey / chief
engineer in radio, and then moved to a career of a recording
engineer [last hit on Billboard was 1981 or so] then as a computer
consultant working with Unix and then into the head tech at two
ISPs and keeping networks running.

But my parents loved history and I did have a minor in history.
One more semester and I could have had a dual degree - in broadcast
- after changing from two years in an EE track.

I liked the Passing Parade and March of Time, but like you I really
hated the Traveltalks. Now I find them fascinating comparing
what once was - and often is no more - to the same places today.

I also hated the boxing match things.

But I alwasy looked forward to Pete Smith, Joe McDoakes, Passing
Parade, and The March of Time. Many of the things in Passing
Parade were similar to the radio series years ago with Paul Harvey
- who told 'the other side of the story'.

Speaking of lesser known Roach comedies (not roaches) will TCM be
showing "Bargain of the Century" with Thelma, Zasu and Billy Gilbert?

It's probably my fave of the first duo - directed by Charley Chase.

Speaking of lesser known Roach comedies (not roaches) will TCM be
showing "Bargain of the Century" with Thelma, Zasu and Billy Gilbert?
Assuming I haven't missed any on th IMDB, I have caught over the last
few weeks:

Alum and Eve (1932)
Asleep in the Feet (1933)
Let's Do Things (1931)
Maids a la Mode (1933)
Old Bull, The (1932)
One Track Minds (1933)
Sneak Easily (1932)
Soilers, The (1932)
Strictly Unreliable (1932)
War Mamas (1931)

And have not seen:

Bargain of the Century, The (1933)
Catch as Catch Can (1931)
On the Loose (1931)
Pajama Party, The (1931)
Red Noses (1932)
Seal Skins (1932)
Show Business (1932)

For a while they were running one almost every day, interspersed with
The Boy Friends. Now they're repeating about one a week. I hope I
haven't missed the last repetitions of some of them. Perhaps TCM will
follow up with some DVD releases. Although it's likely they'll do
"compliations" where we have to buy six Traveltalks to get three
Roaches.

Langdon in talkies, though in silents i find him on the creepy side.

Marion Mack was married to the Producer of Streamlined Swing, Louis
Lewyn. One can imagine that that was the reason Lewyn used Keaton as a
Director, and why Keaton frequently made cameos in Lewyn's short films
from the Voice of Hollywood -Paramount on Parades days, to Lewyn's
later Colortone shorts like LA FIESTA DE SANTA BARBARA that were
released by MGM.

a great cast. I was surprised to see that it really seemed an Oliver Hardy
vehicle rather than the character role i had expected. Somehow i don't mind Harry
Langdon in talkies, though in silents i find him on the creepy side.
I have always liked Langdon in talkies, and one only wishes ZENOBIA had
been a stronger picture with better opportunities for Hardy. He has a
nice chemistry with Billie Burke, and what little screen time he
actually gets with Langdon is enjoyable enough. Hardy could have
definitely worked as a great character actor if the split from Laurel
had become permanent.

I just started watching some of these, and enjoyed the shorts directed by Keaton.
In Streamlined Swing, i noticed the story credit was by Marion Mack--did she
really write this or (since it was about a railroad car) was that an inside joke?
Is there a story behind this?
Marion Mack was married to the Producer of Streamlined Swing, Louis
Lewyn. One can imagine that that was the reason Lewyn used Keaton as a
Director, and why Keaton frequently made cameos in Lewyn's short films
from the Voice of Hollywood -Paramount on Parades days, to Lewyn's
later Colortone shorts like LA FIESTA DE SANTA BARBARA that were
released by MGM.--
Louis Lewyn also appears as an extra as a Union soldier in THE GENERAL.
