I just found out my spouse signed up for, and is now
able to go on the internet, and see a picture / scan
of what the mail person is going to be putting
in our mail box today.
Every piece!
Presumably USA nation wide.

And hacking is rarely punished.
And leakers are also rarely punished.
And thieves breaking into mail boxes and stealing
mail, and identity & thieving = rarely punished much.

No. She can only track you if you agree to be tracked.

Find My iPhone requires YOUR AppleID and YOUR password, and it
automatically signs you out after a short period of time, so that using
it on someone else's phone doesn't result in them being able to track
you forever. And of course, you can tap "Sign Out" when you're done to
do it even more quickly.

I don't know about "scanned" in the sense that you get an image
of the envelope or whatever, but the barcode (IMB) on any piece
of commercial mail is scanned every time the mail goes through a
post office(*). If you are the sender of the mail, you can get
daily scan information for all your mailpieces which will tell you
where it was and when. I once built a web site for tracking mail
across a map based on these scans. When customers send in their
reply envelopes with their power bill payment or whatever, you
can see those coming in as well, and forcast when the revenue will
get to you.

I'm not aware of recipients having access to the scan data for
their address, but it is certainly technically doable. (And I haven't
worked in that field for several years, so who knows).

(*) Some towns have a post office so small that the mail is scanned
and sorted into trays at the nearest "big" distribution post office.
In those cases it looks like all the mail stopped at that post office.

I'm just aware that if this is up and running, then they're doing a HELL of a
lot better than about 15 years ago ... when they purported to let you be able
to track your package on their website, but unlike FedEx at the time, it
seemed that about 80% of the employees who were -supposed- to be getting the
tracking data and posting it had no idea they were even supposed to be doing it.

As a result, they managed to _totally lose_ not one, but two cardboard boxes,
moving size (so about {squints across room} 3'x2'x2'), having them disappear
partway to their destination in CA. They managed to cut out the mailing label
that was on each box and mail THAT back to me ... but the irreplaceable
contents? Oh no, nobody had bothered to gather them up and match them with
the clearly-torn-open box (these were at two different times as well, though
partly overlapping; I mailed the second box with USPS before becoming enraged
on finding out the elusive fate of the first, I'm not TOTALLY dumb), they
apparently just gathered them up and forwarded them to the warehouses in GA
containing the lost/dead letters from forever. Which they also would NOT
bother to try searching for said contents, even with an exact description and
approx time of gathering. (The other five or so boxes did get there. Yay.)

... ... ... Needless to say, if I ever have to send stuff again, FedEx gets my
business. They double-check your tape or duct tape, for example, and even then
made EVERY check-in point visible on the website _and did them_. Versus USPS,
where a box could show up at its destination without any in-between notes, or
could have a couple in-between sightings but no word as to whether it ever got
there. Even now thinking about it is making me angry.

Dave, and you wouldn't like how much I post when angry ... oops

ps: "You should have insured them then!" I _did_ insure one! ... And found,
when I went to make the claim, that they wouldn't even consider processing it
without _receipts_ for every item in the box. Which, having gotten these two a
week over a couple decades from various stores, I didn't HAVE saved in a
stack, plus which the price of each was 50c ... but REPLACEMENT price would
involve tracking down who exactly had bought the other one or two from that week
of each one. Not one or two per store, mind you; one or two in the WORLD. Only
one store at a time ever got them. Pardon me while I GRRRR again...

Registered mail is about the best they can do, and its pretty good. The US
sends classified material by registered mail on pretty regular basis (without
exterior markings).

USPS has been photographing all mail for a decade or more. The photos are used
for OCR to get the address and zip, and are sent over the net to a service
center in the midwest somewhere if human eyes are needed.

If you think the 3 letter agencies haven't been archiving these, you're

delivered to *your* address?
