Announce: Weather Screensafer for Radio/Touch/Controller

I'm happy to announce end of Beta of my Weather-Screensafer:

FEATURES

- will show current weather (Temperature + Humidity) as a big icon.
Also current date and time is available and configurable.
- will show forecast for next 3 days as three small icons. Icons
toggle if the datafeed isn't clear about the weather (so you might see
some clouds - or even clouds with a bit of sun - toggling with a rain
icon. This gives you a general idea of the day, while knowing that
there might be rain as well)
- weather-data taken from www.wunderground.com
- written portable to support 7.3 + 7.4 + 7.5 firmware-version (7.5
as of 10.01.2010 - could brake as this version still changes)
- works for Controller/Touch/Radio (tested with Controller + Radio
and squeezeplay)

INSTALL
In SqueezeBox-Server you first have to register my repository-URL:
http://www.stagessound.de/bluegaspode.xml
Then you are able to install the applet by going to
"Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer" on the Touch/Radio/Controller.

More detailed step-by-step instructions for installing applets can be
found in the wiki
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlay_Applets#Applet_Installer

CONFIGURE

- Go to 'Settings->Screen->Screensaver'
- Here you will have to configure the location to show weather-data
from ('Screensavers->Weather settings').
This location will be passed to www.wunderground.com, so you might
want to test there, whether your location will be recognized.
The default is 'Berlin, Germany' so you always know how my mood is
...
Futhermore here you can switch between °C and °F and select what
additional information (time/date/observation time) you want to see.
- Also in the screensafers-menu you will have to configure the
weather-screensafer (most probably under 'when stopped').
You can also preview the weather here by pressing 'Play' when the
weather-screensaver is selected
- The Weather-applet will also install itself under the
'Extras'-menu, so you can start it whenever you want. (With 7.4+
firmware, you might have to activate the extras-menu under
'settings->home menu')

OPEN TODOS

- maybe showing some night-images when its night

CHANGELOG
10.01.2010 (1.0): Going out of Beta. Small changes to run with 7.5
firmware

It's now part of the official list so there is no need to setup this
repository manually, it's enough to check the "Show all 3rd party
plugins" checkbox in Plugins tab in Squeezebox Server web interface.

When I remove the URL from the plugin-page then the applets only show
the applet names ('Headphones' and 'Weather') where I'd expect
'Headphone Switcher' and 'Weather Forecast'.

I guess this is because my controllers language is set to german.
Do you have any idea how I could prevent that (other than specifying
all languages and putting english descriptions in it) ?

You can have localisations for the applet title in the repo file. If
your local language is set to DE then you should have DE entries in the
repo? Looks like you only have EN ones at present... The logitech repo
will be a copy of yours at the time the script was run - so let us know
when you update yours. I think it should fallback to EN titles though -
sounds like you are not seeing this?

So I think I know what you mean. The title of the applet is taken from
the repo title field. This should fallback to EN if you have only
defined this. This approach is fine as long as the applet remains in
the repos. However if it is removed from the repos, but is installed
locally then applet installer adds a menu item to allow the applet to be
removed, but it only shows the name of the applet, not its localised
title. Does this sound like your problem? I am not sure if I can look
into the applets own string table to get its own localisation -
theoretically the relavent info is there..

Ah - yes that will be the case !

When erland wrote 'you can change your install instructions' I just
removed my repository.xml from the plugins page.
I then went to the controller, started the applet installer and could
only see the applets name.

I thought it did fetch the name now wrongly from the 'official list'
but I guess what really happened was that it wasn't on the official list
yet.
So maybe the applet installer just showed them for uninstall.

No worries - it does when I have the repository file registered under
plugins !

Ah - and I wondered already if there was some magic scanning the
wiki-page :) This means on every applet-update (causing a sha-signature
change) of the repository file I'll have to PM you ?

Well the version number needs to change too - so its not just the sha
change.. but yes. Please prompt me or Erland.

We could probably automate it, but at present this provides a manual
check to make sure the changes look sane.

Looking at squeezeplay I can't do the localisation trick I do in the
server for plugins which are no longer in the repos as there is no
standard for how an applet's title is localised. I will think about how
to tidy this up, but it is cosmetic so I was hoping to get the mechanism
working first.

Great :)

I have two questions for you:

1) How come it shows the forecast for today in the big picture and then
again in the small icons below? Wouldn't it be better if it showed
today+1,+2 and +3 below?

2) I can see that the three forecasts below changes all the time. First
it shows one of the days as clouded and the next second it shows it as
partly sunny. Is this a bug or?

Can the screensaver pass along key press events to the device? For
instance, I have the weather come up while listening to the device. If I
press the power button to turn the radio off, the screensaver just goes
away and I am back at the usual currently playing screen. Then I hit
power _again_ to actually get it to turn off. So, if the radio is not
'off', can the screensaver pass the keypress to the OS?

All other screensafer work the same way, don't they ?
I don't want to break with the 'defacto'-standard established by
logitech.

If you connect with a tool like WinSCP to your device you will find the
applet installed under
/usr/share/jive/applets/weather
(Some instructions on how to use WinSCP you'll find here
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlay_Applets#Manual_installation)

The images used are listed at the top of the actual applet
(WeatherApplet.lua).

The images used are the best one I could find for free on the internet
('free' in the sense of: it has a proper copyright which explictly
allows me to use them).
If you get hold to better ones (or are good at drawing please let me
know :) )

Hi.
Thanks for the plugin - it's my default screensaver since I've
discovered it.
Is it possible to use a Personal Weather Station available through the
wunderground.com for the current condition source? This way the
forecast will still be supplied from the city's webpage, while the
current conditions will be continuously updated from the PWS's page.
Ideally, you'll need to include two new configuration fields: the code
of the PWS, and the desired refresh interval.
Thanks ahead,
Dmitry

Unfortunately not: on the wunderground.com site one has to choose
"Personal Weather Stations" instead of the default "Weather Conditions"
in the search box options - in order to find and display the PWS data.
Of cause I've tried it with your plugin - didn't work either (it said
briefly that the weather data is unavailable, and then the screen went
blank).

I see - the problem I have is, that when I try different
personal-weather-stations, that they don't send an icon-string, which I
could render.

Here you can see the data of three personal weather stations in my
area, none of them have an 'icon' tag.

Indeed, there is no icon in PWS XML page. May be the <ob_url> field
could be used as an origin of all the missing information?
I noticed that on the city's forecast page, one can choose either the
nearby airport or one of the closest PWSs as ones "current conditions"
source (the drop-down menu in the "current conditions" frame). But even
if PWS was chosen, the icon still remains intact. May be they are using
the same tactics: taking the available data from the PWS feed, adding
the missing pieces from the airport/city feed?

Thats not allowed due to license restrictions.
I'm only allowed to take the data from the XML for noncommercial

But if we take the icon from the airport/city-feed, is it really worth
to take the temperature from a personal weather station ?
I guess we are talking here about difference of about 1°C ? Which could
be a real difference or just based on an uncalibrated personal
temperature sensors. And depending on the wind the temperature you
really feel outside will be different again.

I fail to see the real value add in supporting personal weather
stations ?

Well, you may be right, but I'll describe what's my incentive to use
PWS's data: I'm living in the city centre near the seashore, and there
is a PWS located about 1 km from my home, giving pretty good
correlation to my whether conditions; the airport on the other hand is
some 30 km further to the land and in the countryside. The temperature
differences between the two locations can be sometimes as much as 5C -
which is pretty substantial. Another reason is the update intervals:
the official one is updated every hour, when the PWS - every few
minutes or even every few seconds, depending on the station. These slow
updates can increase the difference even more - especially in the early
morning or late evening.
As to the usage permission: I think if you'll take the "query=lat, lon"
field at the end of the <ob_url> string of the PWS and use it in the
form of
"http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/WXCurrentObXML/index.xml?query=lat,lon"
which is officially permitted also, you will not violate any T&Cs
mentioned there. But again, I'm not a lawyer, so if I'm wrong - please
disregard it altogether.

Hello,

Thanks for the applet. Did you end up having time to look at using the
PWS data? My situation is similar to dimab's - on any given day I can
have a significant difference in temperature between the airport
temperature and a PWS located close my house. Today the difference is
currently 8.2C and increasing all the time ;)

If all your time is taken up with squeezepad and you'd be happy for
someone else to take a look at the applet, please let me know.

thanks.

No - I'm sorry, SqueezePad is taking all my time now.
I'm happy to get contributions, which I'd integrate into the official
codebase.

Cool - that it was so easy for you to change stuff.
Feel free to change the pictures for yourself.

I won't be able to use them in the official version though. My biggest
problem with DeviantArt is, that almost no user there publishes a
license under which the work can be used.
And having no license text for me is a no go to use it.

What version number of SqueezePlay exactly ?
I'm developing in SqueezePlay (and as of 10.01.2010 every
SqueezePlay-Version worked) so this should definitely work (or there
were new changes after 10.01 on logitechs side).

Can you clarify this? What does "datafeed isn't clear" imply? Weather
changing during the day? Different data from different stations?
Something else?

Look at this datafeed:
http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/ForecastXML/index.xml?query=Berlin%20Alexanderplatz

It has an 'icon' and a 'skyicon' for each day.
'icon' could be rain and 'skyicon' could be 'partly cloudy'.

Ah, OK. Now that I understand this, I don't think I'd use the phrase
"datafeed isn't clear". It is quite clear - 'icon' represents the
complete weather conditions or forecast while 'skyicon' only represents
cloud cover. I would suggest that, except for aviation uses, the
'skyicon' is mostly irrelevant and that your applet should display only
the 'icon'. Note that this seems to be what the wunderground web pages
do.

I don't agree.

Even if the forecast-icon says 'rain' -> that won't last for the whole
day (typically its raining less than half a day here in germany - we
rarely have a day full of rain).
So giving the 'sky-icon' as well is actually more information for all
the times when it isn't raining that day (and even if its raining I can
see if I should expect it to be heavy rain and the sky real dark or
light rain with some sun peeking through).

For me giving both icons gives me a much better forecast than only
showing one.

Fair enough. In that case, please consider this an enhancement request

Another problem:
I don't have a special icon for 'chanceofrain' - that is rendered as a
rain-icon. So one more reason to leave the skyicon to tell me more
about the day.

By the way: right now I have 'sunny' as icon and 'partlycloudy' as
skyicon (so toggling between a big sun and a sun partly covered with
clouds). Again a reason why I didn't like the 'icon' alone.

If you still want to change it, just have a look to the source-code
(use WinSCP to connect to your radio and search
/usr/share/jive/applets/Weather/WeatherApplet.lua.

In there you'll find the lines

Code:
--------------------

forecastWeather[i]["icon1"]=self:getContentFromXMLTag(singleDaysForecastXML[i], "icon")[1]
forecastWeather[i]["icon2"]=self:getContentFromXMLTag(singleDaysForecastXML[i], "skyicon")[1]

--------------------

Just change the second line to use "icon" instead of "skyicon".

Enhancement Request are only followed if more than one person votes for
a change :D

This applet looks great and has some terrific functionality. However, I
am having difficulties getting it to display weather for my location.

I was happy to see that I could install the applet directly on my Touch
through the Touch menu. However, after installing it, I don't seem to be
able to adjust the settings for my location. (The weather in Berlin is
currently a lot nicer than it is where I live, and that is nice to
know, but not what I want to know.) I have hunted all over the place
for a place on the Touch interface to change the location for the
weather settings, but I can't seem to find a menu anywhere.

I thought that perhaps I could adjust the location settings on the
Squeezebox server. However, the Weather applet does not show up on the
Squeezebox Server, whether I have specified to show all 3rd party plug
ins or not or have specified the URL for the bluegaspde repository (I
understand that this should not be necessary).

OK, I thought, the firmware is new so there may be some changes, and
things might not work as advertised. Consequently, I thought I might
try to change the settings manually in some file on the Touch itself.
So, I looked at the code in usr/share/jive/applets/weather (first time
I have ever looked at a lua file), and it looks like a weather.location
object is being called from WeatherMeta.lua. So, I modified the text
string, "Berlin,Germany" in the WeatherMeta.lua file to my own
location. However, for some reason that I can't figure out right now,
this has no effect. I am still getting conditions from Berlin. I have
even tested a variety of strings that should work for my location by
passing them as a query string to
http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/GeoLookupXML/index.xml?query=[some
value].

I am, admittedly, a noob, so I really don't have a clear grasp yet on
how all the pieces work for applications, plugins, and the Touch in
general. Perhaps someone can direct me to an easy fix, confirm that I
am not alone in having this difficulty, or at least confirm that my
troubleshooting strategy is not correct (I am not looking at the right
files, for example).

I running firmware version 7.5.0-r8673 on the touch; the software on
the Squeezebox server is 7.5.0-r30464.

Thanks!

Martin

Um,

on my Radio the menu for setting the location is under
Settings->Display->Screensavers->Weather Settings

It should be the same for the Touch !

This is a pure SqueezePlay applet, so no configuration on the server
available.
Changing the WeatherApplet-LUA-file doesn't help - the value there is
just the default-value (which is just read once right after
installation).
The actual setting is saved under
/etc/squeezeplay/userpath/settings/Weather.lua (at least on the
Radio).

Hope the easier way via the menu is working for you ;) !
If not someone has to buy me a Touch :D

Hi.

I like this applet very much but as I'm using my Radio mainly as an
alarm clock I'd like a time display which

- is larger
- not changing between time, date and last reload time of weather data

Maybe you can built some switch to prevent switching some time.

Thank you very much!

You configure this under the Weather-Screensafer settings.

So just disable the options you don't want to see.

I didn't find a second icon-set (which is freely available with a
usable copyright) yet.
If you find new icons I could help you to replace them yourself - thats
not too difficult.

As with all feature requests ... at least some other person needs to
wish for the same things before I consider adding new stuff.
(sorry, got a family now and have to prioritize harder).

What about the icon_sets that are published in the XML? Surely they

I realized that they now have URLs in their feeds (which they didn't
have at the time of writing this plugin).
Anyway - licensing is not as subtle as that.

Just because a website provides content (and links), its not allowed to
just use it (Thats the reason I don't use the sattelite images from the
wunderground main page as well).
And there is a difference between showing stuff in a browser or
downloading it to this device.
The problem here is, that I wouldn't want do download/show the
files/iconsets on the fly. I had to download them and bundle them so
that they get installed on your Controller/Radio/Touch.
Copying and redistribution is definitely not allowed (to my knowing)

So again - if you do the downloading stuff yourself, I can provide
instructions on how to embed/use them in the applet. Then you do it on
your own (very low) risk.

>

I see it the other way round. Its your task to do a poll and convince
me that you are not the only one wanting it :D.
It would be good to make a small sketch on how the distribution of
image/font-areas should look like.

Some other suggestions:
I use the 'Screensafer Switcher' Plugin from erland (I think it was
called this way). I configured it to toggle between the big default
clock and my Weather Screensafer. Thus when sitting away from the
Display I just have to wait say 10seconds in the worst case until the
big clock is displayed.
This was a better solution to me, because I now have the biggest
possible weather display and the biggest possible clock display
together.

You could also have a look at the 'Custom-Clock' applet. It provides
means to also show Weather Data - and is its main-focus was to display
a clock so maybe this this is more what your are searching for.

I would appreciate as well to have icons with a circular sun :-). It
looks like there is a bar at the top of the screen is not used. Could
extending the icon image to this area help ?
I feel this plugin is great and I personally don't need more "time"
display. Obly improvement needed from my point of view would be the
quality of icons which currently is behind current standards we are
getting used to in most devices (such as mobiel phones... check the
look of the weather applet of HTC HD2 device).
Thanks again still for this

Sorry I don't take this that easy. I searched a lot around the web when
writing this plugin.
The first link is sort of OK. I had to provide means to 'attribute' the
author though, but that might be doable.
(gilles2, do you also like these pictures more than the current ones ?)

Where do I find copyright information for the last three links ?
All I can see is a clearly stated copyright below all those pictures ?

I just did a short test with unstretched icons (not properly centered

As one can see they get too small and look much more bad (in my
opinion) than the stretched version.

With the help of erland I published now a v1.2 of my applet.
Actually you won't recognize a difference. But the applet can now be
integrated with erlands (next version of) his 'Custom Clock Applet'.

With this applet its possible to arrange all the data how you like
(including non-stretched circular suns). A simple version you can see
attached with this screenshot (sorry its currently raining here, so
can't show the sun).

I updated my initial posts with an 'advanced topics' section so people
not reading the whole thread will know it too.

I guess erland will give further instructions in his CustomClock-Thread
when he's ready.

I've just read about this plug-in and it looks great, but I can't seem
to find it within the plug-in extension repositories. I even added the
URL that was in the first posting but still nothing.

I see a plug-in named "Weather, date, and Time" but I don't see one
named "Weather Screensafer". Can someone point me on the right
direction?

Thanks.

the applet doesn't appear on the server.
You have to install it via the applet-installer directly on your
Radio/Controller/Touch.

Did you follow the instructions in the very first post ?

I'm afraid that's not possible (nor do I plan to provide such a
possibility due to time constraints).
You could have a look at erlands 'CustomClock'-Applet. This one
provides integration for the 'SuperDateTime'-plugin (which I think
provides wind information). You can then create your own screen with
the information you like.

I used the 3 day forecast on my Duet controller several times a day it
was a great feature. Yesterday I tried to install the update applet and
everything disappeared.I could not find it under extras, screen saver or
on the home menu.
I went back to applet installer and it was no longer listed.I
reinstalled all applets and it still did not show up.I felt like a
friend left without telling me. HELP how do I get it back. All the
correct boxes are checked on the server and the location is correct.

All right - than lets have a look at what might be wrong !

When you go to the applet-installer on the controller - what applets

I guess you installed two plugins (maybe 'superdatetime' as well) then

My Weather Applet is solely installed and configured on the Touch (as

Hi Stefan, I tweaked a little the file strings.txt to add Italian
language to messages. I attach it here, so if you'd like to update your
applet installation with a new language added, feel free to use it.
Howewer I found that the applet doesn't care it at all, leaving always
english statements, in the setup section of the applet itself, in the
initial statement ("Loading weather") and finally in the date the
applet displays.
Or maybe you need these translation in some other file. If so, send me
the statements to be translated.
Another thing: may you display somewhere the location wunderground
sends back to the appelt? Just as a confirmation it understood the
location I typed.

@paltomare: I'm afraid I'm currently not working on night images.
I'm quite happy as it is now and for some reason I lack the motivation
to go on developing on this Applet (though I would fix bugs if needed
for future firmware versions).
Any help is welcome if night images should become a reality !

Just a quick suggestion... I love the screensaver... I have it on my
Radio at work and it's great. The only thing I can request is...

When you alternate the forecast images, you might want to indicate
which is day and which is night. While separate images (i.e. sun and
moon) would be one way, something easier might be to only display the
temperature (high temp for the day, low temp for the night)... or put
something like Monday/Mon Night...

The toggling icons don't indicate night and day.

Hi guys,
I just uploaded a new version with your translations !
Just uninstall + reinstall if your Device doesn't show you the option
to upgrade (it needs some time, sometimes until it recognizes the new
version number).

Thanks for your help.

I didn't see the option for date/time switching, this works fine, now.

I still would like a larger font for the displayed time :-)

Maybe you can do a poll, I guess I'm not the only one who would like
weather but mainly wants to see the time.

Especially at night, the font is just too small for a quick glance :-)

Look at this datafeed:
http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/ForecastXML/index.xml?query=Berlin%20Alexanderplatz

It has an 'icon' and a 'skyicon' for each day.
'icon' could be rain and 'skyicon' could be 'partly cloudy'.

bluegaspode,

Thanks for this awesome applet! Any chance we could get an option to
eliminate the blue semi-transparent background? I'm running my SB
Radio with a plain black background and the blue tint over the top
looks a little odd. Also, I think without the two separate blue
backgrounds the whole thing would look a little more unified.

Thanks,
Ryan
