The question was discussed on Monk; you know:
_ Is "assistant" the same as "secretary"? _

|What are those?
|- Those are for you.
|- Get out! Flowers? "Happy Secretaries' Day. - Mr. M."
|- You're welcome!
|- Mr. Monk, I'm not your secretary. I'm your assistant.
|- Yeah, secretary. It's the same thing.
|- No. No. It's not the same thing.
| Do you think a secretary has to do what I do?
| It's a huge responsibility.
|- What about the Secretary of State? That's a very important job. Or
| Secretariat, Triple Crown winner. Love to see an assistant do that.
|- You don't respect me at all, do you? I mean, really, really respect
| me.
|- Of course I do.

The job that used to be called "secretary" is now called "assistant,"
because "secretary" was woman-associated and hence demeaning.

A "private secretary" became an "executive assistant."

"Secretary" had split into two quite separate meanings: a lowly office
job, and a high political office.

That Monk mixes them up tells me that he's either not very bright, or is
being a dick. And we know the first option isn't true.

Anyone who thinks that the job of secretary is a "lowly office job"
has either never had a secretary or had a secretary who couldn't stand
working for him or her.

She may have been lowly-paid, but "a lowly office job" indicates a
lack of respect for the position and the person holding it.

I didn't get deeper into it in the parallel discussion, which was
getting out of hand already, but in our society, money is the main
driver of status and power, so pay grade is the primary indicator of
respect.

That's suddenly become your favorite insult. Anti-male much? Have
you ever called someone a sunt? (*The Boys in the Band*: "That's
French, with a cedilla," because you certainly couldn't say the word
on stage in 1969. I hope they didn't change it in the 2019 version.)

Perhaps it indicates that Monk's disorders went beyond OCD and
included some aspects of The Spectrum.

On one of Monk's shows, I remember Monk and a guy with a beard were talking in a bar and the guy with the beard said: "I bet you ten dollars that I can tell you where you got your shoes." Monk shakes his hand, and he points to his feet. Ha, ha, ha !! He won ten dollars!
