To Be Loved (Forever) - The Pentagons
http://youtu.be/G0ssmecGOMk
Hailing from San Bernardino Ca,one of my favorite vocal group records
from 1960 is the Pentagons' super cool "To Be Loved (Forever)
originally waxed for George Motola's Fleetwood International label
that was picked up by Bob Keane of the bigger Del-Fi concern---who
promptly released it on his new Donna (named for the Ritchie Valens
hit) label.

A Woman, A Lover, A Friend - Jackie Wilson
http://youtu.be/gloRoEE8Owc
Decent 1960 Jackie Wilson revamp for Brunswick that tops the Buddy
Johnson original from the previous year. The great "Doggin' Around"
remains my best JW number of 1960---a year spoiled for him with
dreadful quasi-operatic offerings like "Night" (banned here in UK
btw),"Alone At Last" and the dire topside of the nomination
here---"(You Were Made For) All My Love"

Here's Buddy Johnson's original

Walking Along - Solitaires
http://youtu.be/aCAQ6Z9Brt4
One of my very favorite Solitaires numbers was waxed at a session for
Old Town in New York on October 10, 1956. The uptempo Milton Love-led
number also became the ONLY Solitaires single ever to gain UK
release---and that wasn't till late 1958 when the Argo reissue
appeared here (on London label)---and for the same reason it appeared
at that time too in the USA--to cash in on the then-current white
Diamonds group Top 20 hit revival of the number

Aka husband + wife team Jimmie Lee Cheatham and Artis Brewster of
Texarkana Tx

JIMMIE LEE AND ARTIS That's Fat Jack 7 MODERN 907 -
Ditty built around a routine riff is waxed effectively. (Modern, BMI)
That's What Love Can Do... .69 So- so warble of a slight ballad.
(Modern. BMI)
(BILLBOARD review July 11 1953)

High Low Jack - Buddy Lucas
http://youtu.be/RSVUgzC9Nzw
Gritty r&b workout (sprinkled with best quality Mickey Baker guitar)
on Groove from 1954 that is one of Lucas' most sought after releases
(regularly fetches three figure sums in sales). So popular that its
been famously booted (with Larry Dale's "You'd Better Heed My Warning"
on the flip)

I'm surprised to learn they came from California. I always thought of
this as a Philadelphia record. (To me the arrangement and the backing
vocals sound a lot like the Skyliners.) I guess it was just very
popular there.

*That's* quite a decent record; I don't think I ever heard it before. I
certainly agree with you about the operatic stuff! But this is my
favorite Jackie Wilson record.

Rick's Solitaires romps to the win. Diane's multi faceted lady is second. Roger's 5 sider is third and Jim's duo edges my poker player in a 5-4 tie breaker for 4th. Does anybody know which one is the woman, Jimmie Lee or Artis?

Jimmie Lee & Artis were a rhythm & blues vocal duo, a husband and wife
team from Texarkana, Texas, that recorded for Modern in 1952-1953.
There full names were Jimmy Lee Cheatham and Artis Brewster. In 1952
they recorded with Jay Franks and his orchestra for Modern. There
doesn't seem to be any indication of the band on this record.

Offhand, I'd guess the woman is Artis.

Most interesting article. Should have clipped the clue from the "ie"
in Jimmie. But that's what I get for not searching on "Artis
Brewster."
