Hi all,

As you know we have our conference in Bern this year. Could one of you
help with the design of the Logo to support the conference communication?
Here are some examples of what has been done for the previous conferences:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing#LibreOffice_Conferences

Thanks in advance for your help!
Kind regards
Sophie

Please have a look at our branding rules [1]. The 2013 breaks them in an
enormous way. And we shouldn't do that twice.

So here there are my first attemps.
I didn't use a building because:
a) i don't know if using a building is a conditio sine qua non for
conference logos
b) i don't know which building is a Bern symbol :(

instead of architecture i used bern city symbol...
i've done 3 attemps, same concept different arrangements, tooking
inspiration from last years' style...

Hello All,
Please see 3 logo proposal for the conference. I have tried to use two
symbols in the
logos.
1. zentrum paul klee (The Shape)
2. Federal Palace of Switzerland

Colors have been used to compliment the libre office logo.

Do let me know what you think.

The form factor doesn't work well as a web-banner/logo replacement.
would be great if it would be <= 85 px in height. 100px is workable,
but anything higher than that won't work.

And my comment to Klaus-Jürgen's remark that you need to follow the
branding guidelines: I don't believe that the 2013 logo was against
those guidelines, after all they state:

"Logos that don't represent the LibreOffice software or the Document
Foundation, but are related to it in some way, may use the LibreOffice
symbol to show the relationship they have to it without adhering to
the above guidelines."

and also the example for the 10th anniversary is quite different from
the normal LibreOffice logo.

After all the event represents the community, not just the software,
so creative freedom is very welcome.

But I also agree that the Milan logo (as seen on
http://conference.libreoffice.org/2013/en ) doesn't pick up the
distinct design elements at all.

BTW: also feel free to play with the motif
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Motif , the triangle
arrangement/patterns - those are used in documents (presentation
templates, letter-heads,...) - and of course can also be used in
logos.

ciao

I am more in favour of KJ's comments. IMO we still need to have a
consistent brand strategy to follow. The 2013 did obviously stray quite
a ways from this. Also our 10 year anniversary banner was worked on when
our branding strategy was still in infancy and we were in the middle of
trying to bridge the connection from our previous life under our older
name and now our newer name.

I still think we need to follow branding strategy as we are really not
well known enough in different sections of the globe.

Yes, adding the motif would be nice. It seems to have been missed in
some of our branding artwork. It also helps with our brand recognition
even if it is still not really necessary.

Cheers,

Marc

+1. Branding consistency works like repetition for pedagogy. We can afford to be more liberal only when our brand is well known. And yet most of the changes should convey a nuance of sorts.

Best,

Charles.

What was decided about the logo?

Hello all,
I have made another one(probably last), using the open office logo
elements & motif.

So here there are my first attemps.
a) i don't know if using a building is a conditio sine qua non for
conference logos
b) i don't know which building is a Bern symbol :(
instead of architecture i used bern city symbol...
It's a good idea :)

My preferred goes to the third, but I like them all. Let see what others

First please make sure you are subscribed to the marketing list. As I
have to moderate you I don't think you are.

ATM it's all right if you post to the two lists.

Thank you and Eleonora for your submission by the way.

Best,

Charles.

Hi all,
As you know we have our conference in Bern this year. Could one of you
help with the design of the Logo to support the conference communication?

Here are my first proposals:
taking our main conference banner and some ideas from Safwan's proposals.

I am sorry to say, but the trend towards using three and more typefaces
in the logo is not a good one. (Safwan's logos use two, Eleonora's seem
to use four, yours [KJ's] uses three).
I wouldn't actually mind if the logo lost the Helvetica part of years
past and was exclusively in Vegur.

Currently my favourite is the left side of
https://www.dropbox.com/s/te697vdkal3ayl7/bern-logo-07.png
from Safwan. However, it is pretty dark -- is there a possibility of
creating a lighter version of this that has the text "LibreOffice" above it?
Also, what font did you use? (Looks a bit like Gotham... which is
proprietary. It would be cool if all fonts were free.)

The right side of the logo looks pretty good too, except that the
document shape strikes me as not really belonging to the rest of the
logo. Maybe it could just be left away?

Finally, in both versions, there is the R in BERN ... which looks
neither like it was meant to be quite this cozy with the N (in which
case there would probably be a "bite mark" in the upper part of the N)
nor like it was kerned properly (for which it is too close to the N). A
decision for either direction would seem like a good idea...

Regards,

Astron.

Hi all,
Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but the correct date of conference is not 3
to 5?
There are events from Sep 2-5, with community meetings on the first
day. See the infobox here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Events/2014/LibreOffice_Annual_Conference/Bern

If we want to match previous logos, it looks like the full date range
should be listed:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/SpecialEvents/LibreOffice_Conference_2011_Paris

Hi :)
It does look a lot better with the 3 or more fonts? This is for a
single event isn't it? Is it still bad practice to use 3-4 fonts if
the logo itself is not going to be around for long? It's more
eye-catching with the mix of fonts.
Regards from
Tom :)

Hello Robinson, Community,

I asked about the date for one reason, this event is not only for
community, at least that's what I think. There are others participants
like students, teachers, enterprises ... so, for these participants, the
event begins on 3.

I'm worried the logo of the event having the date 2, it seems that the
event begins on day 2. I understand the logo for the conference in Paris
had the same thought, but I don't agree with that. This can be confusing
for the participants that are going to participate in the first time.

Sorry for my observation, but I think the communication needs to be very
clear. We need to think about the people who are not part of the community.

You're right but when the program will be online, it will be clear that
the first day is a community day and I guess those people out of the
community will look at it before coming. And if I remember well, on the
old time we didn't took this day into account for announcement, but this
was confusing too for the community.

Cheers

Hi Sophie,

I agree with you when you say the program will be online, but still, I
think the people are very visuals, I mean, propagate the logo with the

I read something.

Well, that's what I think. :)

Right -- there are actually 2 issues here:

1) The primary conference events/talks start on the 3rd, not the 2nd

2) The term "community day" may be confusing. We have meetings for ESC
and the Board, but (AFAIK) not for other parts of the community.
Post by Eliane Domingos de Sousa
I always try to be in the other side when I read
something.
A good policy :-) So what would make sense for us? What about adding
something to the 2nd?

- A meeting or two for the community (QA? Docs?)

- A small event later in the day for both the community and other
attendees? Perhaps just meet up for drinks?

Cheers,

Just to add my opinion:

Our real LiboCon runs from Sep 3-5 and the 2nd is our (the
TDF/LibreOffice community membership day) to talk of internal
matters/policy/planning etc. IMO, we should put the dates 2-5th on the
logo, and when the logo appears on our site, we should make it clear
that the date of the Sep. 2, is the day for TDF/LibreOffice community
membership only.

This may in fact help in promoting and convincing LibreOffice
contributors to apply for membership before the conference, and, we
could plan on accepting applications for membership a month or so before
the conference so that new members could have a chance to come to the
conference on Sep 2.

Cheers,

Marc

Yes, we use to have the NLP/l10n meeting here too. And as I said, this
was added when several members discovered too late about that day
because it was not advertise, or they thought it was private.

We used to have meetings of the marketing group and the localization
group, and also a media training for the community members who were
willing to participate.

I would try to organize the community day in a more structured way than
in the past couple of years.

If possible, I would have a media training / public speaking training in
the late morning (I know that there are people interested), then two
parallel tracks where we have BoD / ESC meetings on one side, and the
marketing / localization meetings on the other.

This of course would round up nicely the community day.

Hi all,

so, I previously wrote something about wanting all-Vegur logos. I wanted
to try too... and it turns out, the numbers of that font looks sort of
bad...

So, at first, I wanted to recreate Safwan's image, with a lighter
document shape and maybe a less quirky BERN. However, Safwan had already
promised to try to come up with something lighter and I ultimately
decided it was harder to recreate his ideas than to create something
original. I created some own logo ideas.

They do not contain anything Bernese, since all I could think of was
[1], and I don't like dogs. I could say though that I went for Swiss
design look rather than including Berne realia.
The logos don't reflect the branding guidelines to the letter (textured
logo, margin between document shape and content, and usage of document
shape and logo in unusual lockup).

Still...

Proposal 1, with slightly quirky of the use of the motif:
Loading Image...
(The contrast is a bit problematic, but it works for me on white, and
also it is okay on black. It won't work on much in between) -- [2]

Proposal 2, dark version of P1:

Proposal 3, more compact, with a little Swiss flag perched in:

Hi all,

when making the logos/banner, please take the actual display size into
account - i.e. the logo is meant to be put into the header of the
conference.libreoffice.org (and other websites)

Having Portrait-style variants in addition is of course OK, but the
website needs the horizontal type.

regarding integrating the swiss flag: what about putting it into the
document-icon? Maybe also inverted, i.e. a red cross on the white
icon?

ciao

I like this concept.
But IMHO it is a little bit colorless.
I think the 2014 is too near by the "B" so I would align it to the flag.
There is no date stamp.

I try to work in this things:

I loved Eleonora’s logo, which was the only one that looked
professional: lovely drawn, not too distanced from main LibreOffice
brand, use of a high-quality font (Gotham), the nice typographic
detail on the R (long stem), lack of stupid replaced letters (I hate
the triangles standing for the O in “conference” in current logo), no
unnecessary & cheesy graphical elements trying to relate to cities
(these logos don’t really need to have city’s realia forced onto
them)... but it was dismissed.

Are you sure you're referring to Eleonora's designs? Because while they seem
to use Gotham, they do have triangles in the O and no stem detail in the R.
Maybe you mean Safwan's design? Or is there a design by Eleonora that was not
on the design list.
