I'm having a tidy up and can't decide whether to chuck some stuff or

I appear to have kept every wall wart/PSU i've ever owned? Shall I chuck
them all.

And a bunch of routers & ADSL modems?

Not kettle leads so much in my case because I do the very rare
tea I drink in the microwave, but I do keep all the equivalent PC
and similar power leads and have found them useful at times with
cheap stuff from china that has bare flying mains leads, specially
lights etc. Cut off the IEC plug and use the rest of the lead to
replace the usually far too short bare flying leads.

"Kettle lead" has become a rather generic name .
It doesn't require the use of a kettle to be a kettle lead .

Well, high current and high temperature. And the insulation etc. to match
of course (although cheap Chinese ones might just have the notch!)

Not quite that simple.

C13 (no notch, used for computers and the like) can be rated anything
from (typically) 6A up to 10A.

C15 (notched, known as HOT SERVICE) is also 10A, but rated for higher
temperatures.

So C15 guarantees high temperature and 10A, while C13 has no guarantees
for temperature and is rated for the current listed on it - although it
is often 10A just like the C15.

Yes, Swann kettles had them. All you needed to do was wait for the

First heard 'kettle lead' used by broadcast types. When IEC connectors
became common there, rather than the iffy XRL LNE. About 40 years ago. But
of course a true kettle IEC is a 'hot' condition one with a notch in the
connector to prevent an ordinary one being used. A 'hot' will fit
ordinary, but not the other way round.

Keep it for 7 years, throw it out, and then you'll want it the next day.

My problem is I keep things, forget I have them, and then replace them only to find the saved item later. In my old age I've started making notes on my phone of where I've stored things mind you swmbo will always know where they are

Same.
I needed to boot an old machine some time ago but it wanted to see a
keyboard, PS2, I went out and bought one but i've since stumbled on one.

Conversely i bought a thermal label printer sold without a PSU convinced
I would have something suitable, i've dozens! Nope!

I got fooled on that one.

Label printer said it needed "7V".

I connected a 7V supply, and there wasn't enough oomph
to run the motor to advance the label.

Turns out it needs a 7V *unregulated* DC supply, which runs
about 9.8V before you click the print button ("unloaded"), then
drops to 7V while the label comes out (due to the current draw).
That's a transformer based brick and rather large for the
power rating (7V @ 1.2 amps).

I figured I could cheap out and use what I had.
The label gadget had other ideas.

I wonder if it's possible to standardise on a few voltages:

5V USB (for gadgets that take 3/4 alkaline cells, on the basis that 5V is
within their natural operating range.)
9V
12V
15V (not sure much uses that?)
20V for laptops etc

Anything that expects to run off an unregulated supply should have one of
these in their range. Anything with a SMPSU should be fine too.

Those happen to be the voltages of USB-PD and Qualcomm QC, although right
now those PSUs are a bit too pricey to have around by the dozen. Perhaps
over time we'll end up with a collection of old chargers...

The trickier thing is gadgets that expect a certain transformer impedance to
limit the current. That's often crude battery charging widgets. It's
difficult to know whether your widget will be relying on that 'feature', and
whether a 5A supply might cause it trouble...

The 7V for a label printer is one that has caught me out before as well.

I repurposed a switch-mode 6V (IIRC) wall wart bought at a car boot sale
and upped to 7.5V or so by changing a resistor (again IIRC). That worked
OK ... but remember that the centre is also *negative* on those printers, gaaah

I also have about two crates too many wall warts...

But is fucked if you want to listen to something specific.
Tracks are indexed by album, artist, genre. Only thing missing is
composer for classical music.
+1 for classical , pain to stream from my ripped CDs as choosing by
composer not reliable of an option.
If your player has a "dir list" option (i.e. select by filename), you can
include the composer in the filename, e.g. "Beethoven - Symphony No 9.mp3"
Vastly more faffing around than with a phone which has columns for the
orchestra and composer.

There's nothing the matter with MP3 players if all you want is the
music without the faff of a phone.
There is no faff with the phone. In fact it’s a lot more
faff to use an MP3 player.
Turn on. Plug in phones or amplifier. Choose track. No faff.

Which player app do you use? The phone doesn't have a built-in one, so I
use Pulsar which doesn't have a composer column.

That’s the other massive advantage with using the phone,
you are free to use a player that suits what you play and
which does things the way your prefer them done.

With a dinosaur mp3 player you are stuck with the way it does things.

if a little large.
Really, stuff like VHS, cassette, ipods - who needs em?

That’s all I do with the phone. And with the phone its vastly
easier to choose the track with the much bigger screen to
see the list of tracks available. And vastly more convenient
to have the phone download the podcasts you choose to
listen to and have the latest eps available to listen to when
you choose to listen to something when on a longer trip etc.

But the phone has a much better screen to see the list on
and can show you when you played that last etc and does
play lists much better and can offer similar stuff you might
choose to try instead of doing that manually.

Only thing missing is composer for classical music.
Not when you use a phone instead of a primitive mp3 player.

And you don’t have to fart around with two separate devices either.

And with the phone, you can answer an incoming call while playing
stuff and have it continue where you paused what you were playing
when the call comes in which is vastly better with podcasts and
audio books as well.

And does audio books vastly better than a primitive mp3 player.

I'm having a tidy up and can't decide whether to chuck some stuff or
stick it in the eaves in case it ever comes in.
I feel like chucking would be good for the soul.
I appear to have kept every wall wart/PSU i've ever owned? Shall I chuck
them all.
And a bunch of routers & ADSL modems?
Save one of anything you can't buy again. Ditch duplicates or what you
can buy if needed.

I threw out all the small wall warts that (by their weight) contained
transformers rather than being SM. I saved a few of the leads with plugs
attached.

The wallwarts and PSUs are likely to have real transformers in them
if of a certain age, transformers that are a disappearing commodity.

Hang onto them

Yes.

Nope, still trivially buyable from aliexpress etc.

No thanks, switch mode wall warts are much more viable
except if you need minimal interference and even if you
do, no interference wall warts are trivially available and
much better anyway.

Personally any of the older wall warts could be worth keeping or flogging at
a boot sale as they may be heavy and sometimes get warm, but they do not
create a radio jammer and as long as the buyer can fit the correct adaptor
for its plug and knows a bit about the requirements of the device its needed
for it can be far better than the supplied el cheapo chines ones already
supplied.

Haha, that's about the size of it!

I took them all (full great big Lidl bag for life) to the tip yesterday
forgetting it closes on Tuesdays but have since found a NAS storage
drive, 2 network cameras and a rechargeable torch that have become
separated from their power supplies so i'm going to have to go through them!

*None of which i've used in years and had forgotten I owned, but....

I have a loft full of stuff kept ‘just in case’. Every now and then delve
into it and retrieve a bit off something to repair an item - either ours or
for a family member / friend etc.

Nothing to do with saving money or being a tree hugger - I just like
repairing things and don’t like waste.

Having said that, sometimes I struggle to find the XYZ I known is there,

There needs to be an app where you can catalogue your stuff and its
location.
I have a remote thermostat & timer that you can use with a plug in
electric heater. It's plainly been put away somewhere one summer and
now... not a scooby.
I want it before winter before the bastards at work do my head in by
having the place roasting hot (often while they aren't even in!)

I have a Word document titled "Stored Somewhere" which gives me a
clue about what might be in the loft, or in the capacious spaces
beneath our beds, which open up much like a hippo's mouth.

Trouble is, I have to remember to update it. I still haven't
found an old monitor that is supposed to be up there somewhere.

With most stuff it should be viable to take a photo with the smartphone
when you put it in the place you use for storage. Maybe with some form
of simple marker/label that makes it clear where it is in the storage area.

If I glued a CCTV camera on my forehead, it would 24/7 record every time
I pickup and misplace objects. The resulting TBs of captured video could
be fed to an AI that would identify objects and enable their searching.

Simples. I'd just look a bit odd in the high street.
