Neil Gaiman's second contribution to the series was not his best and was
made worse by the terrible acting from the two kids who I hope we've seen
the last off.
Tamsine Outhwaite didn't amount to much and the terrible comic stereotype
characterisation of an army officer by Jenna-Louise Coleman was probably
more the fault of the director and writer than the actress herself.
The story was saved though by the presence of Warwick Davies who put on a
great performance.
Matt Smith was in conflict with himself after being taken over by the
Cybermen but most of the ideas were pinched from Star Trek and the Borg
Collective.
The psychic paper is getting ridiculous and has to go and so has the sonic
screwdriver. Neither of them are believable.
Obviously the galaxy that was destroyed must have been extremely small since
it can't have been more than 1000 light years away if the hole in the middle
of it was created 1000 years earlier and the explosion was able to reach
half way across it and destroy it before the Cybermen had time to escape.
Let's assume that it was a satellite galaxy of the one the amusement park
was in and that the script editors are morons that don't have the remotest
clue about science.
There was also a reference to the Mechanical Turk but if you're going to
have some stupid child claming to be a member of their school's chess club
and then place themselves in the position of a fools made at the start of
the game then it's got to have some sort of deliberate significance to the
plot.
The story managed to work properly in 45 minutes but only by cheating since
it relied on the stupidity on the Cybermen not to realise that the Doctor
had a disabling device on the table next to him (or to figure out the Doctor
was lying about the number of moves to mate) and on the stupidity of
everyone else not to have used it earlier.
Gold now interferes with the Cybermen's software rather than their
breathing. How? Also since when has acetone done the same? I thought it
melted the plastic on them.
I hope next week's finale is not going to be disappointing since it seems
it's going to be another repetition of Stephen Moffat's previous one and the
one before that, bringing every past character and monster together for
something completely overhyped and I doubt that we're really going see of
hear the Doctor's name in a form that can be understood if at all.
