Is there an ETA for when SqueezePlay will be included in the 7.3

Thanks!

It should already be available as a separate download:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/latest/7.3/

Well, should. Today's build didn't make it, but yesterday there was:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/SqueezeCenter_7.3_trunk_v2008-09-24/

I just installed Squeezeplay on Windows.

Some feedback...

The right mouse button should work as the "Back" arrow button on the
Jive remote. It's easy to go into a menu with no way back out without
resorting to the cursor keys on the keyboard. So right clicking should
bring me back "up" through the menu structure towards home.

Fans of single button mice on the Mac are SOL.

Sorry to turn this into some sort of bug reporting thread, but I've
noticed that Squeezeplay's audio will occasionally stutter when I'm
performing scrolling in Firefox. I may peg the CPU for a 1 or 2
seconds, but it's enough to cause a stutter. I fixed this by changing
the priority of the Squeezeplay process up to RealTime.

However this is risky, as I wouldn't be able to kill the process if it
locked up.

Also, for some reason Squeezeplay has inherited the same stutter 10
seconds from the end of each song that Softsqueeze has had for some
time now.

Softsqueeze used to play fine, but it now stutters to the point that I
no longer use it.

Squeezeplay also consistently stutters 10seconds from the end of each
track. I'm guessing that it's caused by the app pulling in data from
the next track.

Hi

Have recently downloaded squeezeplay for windows XP. Overall it works
well except I dont get any of the keyboard shortcuts. The mouse works
okay, as do the cursor keys, but none of the qwerty keys.

I am running squeezecenter and squeezeplay from Oct 23.
So squeezecenter is 7.3 - 23662
and squeezeplay is 7.0.1r1
squeezecenter is running on a freenas box

Any thoughts?

I used Squeezeplay on my PC for the first time today. After playing
around for a couple of hours i starting to wonder exactly what the
design brief is here? It's basically just the controller on my PC - but
why would i want that? It's a great on the SBC, but it's menu structure
and UI seems really really strange for a desktop app - very clunky,
partly because it's primary aim is controlling players. That not what i
want on my PC, i want a player like Softwqueeze is (the the ability to
controller players too). So where is this going? I'm finding it very
strange, it all seems the wrong way around and i just dont get it
sorry!

In what fundamental way is the Squeezeplay UI not like Softsqueeze ?
Despite the different look the memory structure is much the same.

I do think that Squeezeplay needs a panel like the remote on
Softsqueeze, so that you have quick mouse access to the volume and
transport buttons.

No, it's fundamentally different. I dont know how to really explain
this but i will try again; My Controller is a controller - it controls
the players in my house. It also plays music now, but thats not it
primary function (at least not what it's UI). What i want on my PC's,
like Softsqueeze, is a player - not a Controller (which has the ability
to act as a player). The SBc is a Controller, the SB3 is a player. I
want a player on my PC, like Softsqueeze was. Squeezeplay is apparently
replacing Softsqueeze. is it a player that can controller your SB's, or
is it a Control app that can play music? Is anyone getting me here? Am
i making sense? May it's just a case of getting the UI, but this UI is
miles from where it should be.

Yes, transport buttons would be great, in fact essential as the SBc has
them, they are badly needed here.

Sorry to the developers, im not trying to be too critical - just one
users perspective

But SqueezePlay is just as much a player as SoftSqueeze. I can't see
(apart from the transport buttons issue) what could be done to make it
more of a player than it is.

>From a player point of view, from my experience SS works pretty much
identically to SP.

In SS if I want to listen to an album, I:

- navigate to Music Library
- navigate to Albums
- scroll down to the album I want
- hit Play on the remote (or hit the plus button to add to the current
playlist)

On SP, I:

- navigate to Music Library
- navigate to Albums
- scroll down to the album I want
- hit "Play all" with the mouse or press the right arrow key (or hit
the "A" to add to the current playlist)

If I want to listen to the radio on SS, I:

- navigate to Internet Radio
- navigate to the Radio station I want
- hit "Play" on the remote

If I want to listen to the radio on SP, I:

- navigate to Internet Radio
- navigate to the Radio station I want
- hit "Play" with the mouse or press the right arrow key

I'm not trying to be awkward, I just don't see where the fundamental
differences are ? For most of the navigation even the keystrokes are
the same. Or is it selecting SP as a player at the beginning of the
process that makes it different ?

I think squeezeplay would be great as a replacement to softsqueeze.
SoftSqueeze was great as a product tester, but is not really what I
have in mind when listening to music on my pc.

SqueezePlay could however act more like a PC app, for example allowing
use of the keyboard when browsing music (e.g. pressing u takes you to
the first artist starting with u or u2 if you are me). Also search by
typing in. Using the scrolly text input stuff seems a bit silly if you
have a keyboard.

If your goal is to create a desktop application, why would you want it
to look or behave _anything_ like the restricted interface on the
controller?

I've just installed SqueezePlay to check it out. I love my Duet, it is
a fabulous unit, it has genuinely freed my music and has been my
favorite appliance since its purchase (if a little fiddly to set up).

JJZolx's earlier posting in this thread hasn't really been discussed.

I agree with Jim - I don't understand the philosophy behind
constraining the display and functionality of a desktop application to
that of a remote control interface with a ~1 inch display, and waste
the opportunity to use the functionality of a PC.

Why not aim to use the full screen real estate available on a laptop or
desktop to make access, display and manipulation of a music library
easier and more functional. Instead of replicating a remote control,
why not provide the library display and functionality of a MediaMonkey
or even Moose??

Alternatively, why not add SqueezePlay's player functions to
SqueezeCenter to operate in the background, to play from the desktop as
well as remote players? At least SC has a rudimentary library display.

You need to switch to the Desktop skin. At the moment you can do that
in 'Settings > Select Skin'. Tom is working on making this the default
on the desktop.

Also consider that SqueezePlay is still very much work-in-progress,
especially with skins. What SqueezePlay does share in common with the
Controller is the same application code, so you can expect to find the
same features supported on both.

I can agree with all that, it would be a little silly if it didn't go
on to take advantage of the benefits of having a fully keyboard
available.

It is worth pointing out that there already is some use of the keyboard
in SP that you don't have on the SBC. For example in Music
Library->Search you get to make full use of the keyboard rather than
having to use the SBC "input" mechanism.

I don't have SC 7.3 installed, but a few weeks ago I installed
SqueezePlay to have a peek. One day I was messing around with
SqueezePlay, while at the same time, playing music on my computer
through J River Media Center. I have one of those keyboards with
built-in media keys, and when I suddenly heard music playing on one of
the Squeezeboxes in another room, I realized SqueezePlay was responding
to the media keys on my keyboard to control the SB. I didn't do anything
to set this up... it just worked. I found that a bit surprising.

Just unexpected, really. Whether it is good or bad would depend on the
situation, I guess. If I was using SqueezePlay as a player on my PC, it
would probably be good. But having the media keys controlling both my PC
music player and a Boom in another room was disconcerting at first. I
kept thinking I was hearing something, so I'd pause my music on the PC,
and what I thought I was hearing would stop... so it took a little while
to figure out what was going on!

i think i understand squeezeplay is a possible replacement for
softsqueeze... i see softsqueeze as a controller and player to play
audio on my PC.

squeeze play only appears to be a controller (or i'm missing
something)... is there an alternate player that can be used with
squeezeplay to play on my PC?

thanks, i find i get tired of telling EVERYONE I meet how great DUET
is...

The latest SqueezePlay betas actually have a real setting for audio
playback and seem to work quite a bit better. The player is more
"permanent"--although I've had strange behavior where it might take a
minute or two for SqueezeCenter to see the player, and for the
SqueezePlay player to be controllable through the SqueezePlay
interface.

I also enjoy the play controls on the latest desktop skin.

SqueezePlay is already more stable for me in remote listening than
SoftSqueeze had gotten--the latter was stopping mid-song a lot, and
usually needed to be restarted to get it playing. With SqueezePlay,
I've had a few stutters--and jumps after coming back from a paused song
that's been paused for a long time (say, lunch) but overall it's been
rock solid. And cover art is quite nice too.

I'm yet to have any success in getting SqueezePlay to work as a player from
work (with my server on a Linux box at home). SoftSqueeze works flawlessly
using SqueezePlay as the 'control' app in this configuration, but I just
can't get SqueezePlay to work as a player.

I've also found that the last build I tried (a day or two ago) had the
problem where a lot of the keys didn't work (P, A and the + and - keys are
the ones I use most).

Any hints greatly appreciated. Any extra firewall ports I need to open?

If SoftSqueeze works, you shouldn't need any other firewall ports (just
9000 and 3483--but make sure 3483 is UDP and TCP. TCP only will work
with SoftSqueeze but not Squeezeplay.)

I had a problem in Vista with keyboard shortcuts if you didn't run
SqueezePlay as administrator. You might also have the problem in XP,
which I assume you're running at work. This happened even though I'm
an administrator on my desktop.

Also, when you install a new build, make sure you not only uninstall
the old one but check for files in c:\Program Files\SqueezePlay. I had
a bunch of lua files left behind, and it seems if those are inconsistent
things don't work, notably audio playback.

Also, perhaps unrelated, I had my home IP address change, and I had to
reenter it in SqueezePlay, but to get it to actually change it, I had
to remove all the application files as above. It'd be nice if you
could identify a player by DNS name (I have a dynamic DNS host set up
for my home address)

Selecting audio playback is now done in Settings/Advanced/Audio
Playback/Enable Playback (BETA).

Hope something here helps. I'm guessing you either have the UDP port
issue or the old install conflict thing going on, since I've seen
similar symptoms due to those issues.

Definitely have UDP open too:

gently:~# iptables -L -v -n | grep 3483
0 0 ACCEPT tcp -- eth0 * 158.152.93.221
0.0.0.0/0 tcp dpt:3483
4269 205K ACCEPT tcp -- eth0 * 80.177.138.64/29
0.0.0.0/0 tcp dpt:3483
0 0 ACCEPT udp -- eth0 * 158.152.93.221
0.0.0.0/0 udp dpt:3483
6 330 ACCEPT udp -- eth0 * 80.177.138.64/29
0.0.0.0/0 udp dpt:3483

I'm connecting from 80.177.138.66, which is within the 80.177.138.64/29
range.

Possibly. It's annoying if the 'A' shortcut doesn't work, and the volume
too, as there's no other way to access those features without the hotkeys.

Ok. Just trying now. Here's what I did:

1. Shutdown SoftSqueeze
2. Shutdown SqueezePlay
3. Uninstall SqueezePlay
4. Clear out the install folder (there were a few 'settings.lua' files, and
the log files in the top directory)
5. Download the latest SqueezePlay (dated 29th Oct, 01:07)
6. Install this
7. Run it
8. Hold down 'left cursor' to get to the top menu
9. Go to 'Settings->Music Source->Other server'
10. Enter my IP address
11. It goes back to the 'Music Source' menu, with the name of my server in
there
12. Go to this server, and use the right cursor to select it. All I get is
the noise that implies that I'm doing something wrong. I've got
further than this before though I'm sure.
13. Now, if I go up to the top and do 'Select player' all I get is the SB2
in my house
14. Go into 'Settings->Advanced->Audio Playback' and turn it on.
15. Back to the top level and into 'Choose Player'. Still only see the SB2
in my house. No evidence through my firewall logs of any packets
being dropped.

Any thoughts? It's connected to the server enough to be able to browse my
music. Could it be because the server already knows about the instance of
SoftSqueeze in the same remote location?

Thanks

Are those firewall rules on the SqueezeCenter computer or on your
actual Internet gateway? Or is your SqueezeCenter computer also your
home firewall?

I've seen the audio playback feature still take a few tries to get
going--as in, enable the player, exit and restart SqueezePlay. Perhaps
more than once. There's some weird state persistence that takes a few
restarts to fully resolve. I assume it's an interaction not just on
the client side but the server state.

The SqueezeCenter software is installed on the firewall.

Ok, I'll give that a go.

One other thought occurs, is it 7.3 (on the Server side) only? I'm still on
the 7.2 branch currently.

Ok, I've now got a 'SqueezePlay' item listed in the players. However, if I
try to select this and go to my server, it tries to connect for a while,
then comes up with 'Problem Connecting'.

Around the time it gives up, my firewall logs the following packet:

Oct 30 10:14:11 gently kernel: FWIn: IN=eth0 OUT= MAC= SRC=82.5.225.118
DST=255.255.255.255 LEN=44 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=0 DF PROTO=UDP
SPT=3483 DPT=3483 LEN=24

This appears to be a UDP broadcast going out from port 3483 on eth0 (the
interface that connects to my cable modem). I can't see this ever working.
Does SqueezePlay rely on this?

Again, could it be because I'm on 7.2 and not 7.3?

If you specify the server using "Other Server" then it may work, but
this is not something that has been tested yet. Otherwise the udp
broadcast is important for player discovery.

I think you need 7.3 for squeezeplay audio playback to work correctly.

Ok. Sounds like that should be my next step then.

What's the current estimate for a release of 7.3? While I like new bells and
whistles, at the end of the day I need a relatively stable and working
SqueezeCentre so that my wife doesn't notice the change!

Based on this post:http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54421
it looks like the first week of December is the current target.

I'm in a similar boat since my whole family uses the SB. As time
allows, I may load up 7.3 on a spare system I have running. Otherwise
I'll wait until 7.3 is officially released and let the dust settle for
a week or so.

Honestly, I've been running 7.3 for nearly a month now, and it's fine
for day-to-day use with my SB2. The biggest issue was the broken
scanner but that doesn't affect people just using the player, and it's
fixed now anyway. If there ever were a problem I'd just roll back to
the previous nightly.

I've tested "Other Server" and it doesn't work. At least, when remote.
A manually keyed in IP address of 127.0.0.1 (to go through ssh) just
bounces the menu a bit and sits there.

Should we be filing bugs for SqueezePlay yet or is it still too early?

For the keys issue: What OS are you running SP on? I have been working
in that area of the code but I haven't seen any issues (on Mac).

Some additional shortcuts have been added but all the old ones should
work (p,a etc...)

The latest keyboard shortcuts for SqueezePlay can be found at:

Keyboard shortcuts are case-sensitive, but perhaps shouldn't be, so that

Should they be upper or lower case? I don't have CAPS lock on.

It always says 7.3.r0 - is there not an incremental number like SC7.3 ?

I just noticed that in the latest index page the OSX disk images
"appear" to have a build number associated with the file names. The
Windows version has no number associated with it, but it would be nice
to have one. I'm almost sure that 7.3r0 is currently the latest
version, but from the index page one can't tell if it is the latest
build.

In the future release an "Always Stay on Top" and a "Dock on this or
that corner" options for SqueezePlay would also be nice.

I am having an interesting issue with SqueezePlay. It is occurring with
todays build for both the server and SqueezePlay (both XP). If I play
FLAC files it will play or a random number of songs (say 3 to 7) before
briefly flashing up a a message at the bottom that say re-buffering. The
message goes away, the time counter continues to run up a bit and then
falls back over and over and no audio is produced. If I skip to the
next song (or start the current one over again) it will play again for
while then the same thing. I set bit rate limiting to 128 and it has
run all day with no issues.

This is all hard wired on a switched 100Mbit network. It is
reproducible by turning off the bit rate limiting.

Richard.

Just downloaded today (date on the file is 31-Oct-2008 07:01) and still no
joy with keyboard controls. Cursors work, but 'P', 'A', '-' and '+' don't.

Bummer. Can you confirm whether any of the shortcut keys work (like
SPACE, z, b) and do the keys work for inputting text in a text input
screen (such as search for artists)?

Also, I think you said that keys had previously worked for you? If you
could try the earlier images and find out when it worked that would help
pinpoint the problem. See: http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/ for
old versions. I think it would be safest to do a clean install
(uninstall and then remove the SqueezePlay dir under <program files>.

Sadly - no good for me.
The [Enter] key is fine, as are the cursor keys, but SPACE, Z, z, B, b
don't work when searching for artists (or at any other time). They
don't work on the test menu input either.

What do 'z' and 'b' do? I know space toggles between pause and play. I'm
away from work for a week, will try either at home or when I go back.

Again, I'm not at work so will have to see whether I can do this. Might be
able to do it when I get home from our little break on Tuesday.

I found that having NUM LOCK on would cause the "a, p, SPACE" keyboard

Aha - well I have been using a laptop which has no NUMLOCK key. I
plugged in an external keyboard, turned off the NUMLOCK key and
unplugged it. Now all the keys work. Hurrah

The November 3rd build still has the num lock dependency. I assume
that when you said "put in a fix on Monday" that it will show up on the
Tuesday nightly?

Yea! Keyboard commands work now regardless of the Num Lock state.

I get a very small pause in the audio, 10 seconds before the end of a
song This is pretty consistent when I'm listening to music. It's not
horrible, but it is noticeable. It's been like that for a while, with
the latest nightlies. I don't think it happens with my hardware
player. Any ideas?

I am using Squeezeplay to listen to music and I want to use the web

Can Squeezeplay's volume be conrtolled via the web interface?

10 seconds before the end of a track is when the server starts
streaming the next track. It may be that the player is getting starved
of CPU by the SC activity (assuming that SC and SP are running on the
same system). The final audio output buffer in SP is not very large (to
keep command and sound-effect latency down). You could try increasing
the priority of the SP process - using *nice* on *nix systems.

I'm using today's builds for SP and SqueezeCenter (Version: 7.3 - 23911
@ Wed Nov 12) and the sound blip is still there. SqueezePlay is running
on a desktop computer connected to the server router via a wireless
card, both systems are using XP, SP3. Wireless connection reports 54
Mbps and excellent signal strength. What I've noticed: when playing an
album the transfer rate to the PC averages 1 Mbps(FLAC) for all tracks.
It drops to 0 at about 37 seconds from the end of a track. At 10
seconds remaining there is a spike to 10 Mbps and this is when the
sound cuts out briefly. Network transfer quickly goes back to 1 Mbps.
Both the server and client PC show no more than 15% CPU utilization
throughout.

I've also not been able to stream more than four or five tracks without
SqueezePlay cutting out. A popup message comes up (too brief to read
the entire message, but it's something about re-buffering). Is there a
log file I can check or enable for SqeezePlay?

I sure hope these problems can get fixed by the post-beta release of
SqueezePlay - I have a lot of hope for this little app...

Is it meant to start in the language selection every time I run it?
I have to hold the left arrow for a few seconds then go to choose
player. Not a problem for me, but more tricky for others in the
household - especially trying to win the Mrs over to buying a couple
more SB's.

I'm running on Linux (Gentoo), all other prefs seem to be saved, it
even starts with the right wallpaper for the last player, last skin
etc.

Any tips?

Also, is there a command line option to force it to start maximized? If
I maximize it in the window manager, then turn on full screen mode in
SELECT_SKIN it looks good, but I don't run a full window manager on my
myth box - I just want it to start the right size.

Thanks for the help.

The "have to do language each time" is not meant to be the behavior.
That should only happen until you have completed a first time setup.
Perhaps setup was never completed. Recently changes went out that would
cause a full reset to happen if you had been using earlier betas, which
forces you to complete setup again. If you haven't already, try
selecting the language then, rather than doing Left Hold, follow the
next step which should be select player. After selecting a player, it
should give a setup complete message, something like: "That's it".
Then you should no longer see the language selection. Let us know if
that works. Even if this fixes your issue, it sounds like an area for
improvement on our part.

Regarding the fullscreen, I made a new bug related to the issue:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10057
In a nutshell, command line fullscreen will be supported soon.

Well, I think you are right that I'm not finishing the setup, but I
can't figure out how to. From language it goes to the "Welcome, lets
get started by getting you connected to your network and music" screen
asking me to press the 'Center button' however none of the keys on my
keyboard will allow me to move forward. The only thing that works is
back.

It has remembered my server, and initially shows the wallpaper of the
last player I used.

I have tried deleting the settings folder under my home directory it
creates but it seems to make no difference, it still remembers my
server and behaves the same.

I had it working on one of the earlier releases, so could there be a
second config file somewhere I need to delete to clean up?

Thanks for all your efforts - its a great product.

Thanks for the wiki.

Installing the version from 2008-11-18
I get the spinny and 'Connecting to', but it never connects.

Not sure if this has been answered elsewhere, but anyway... is it
possible to run Squeezeplay as a service (headless)? If not, is it
planned. I will never want to use Squeezeplays UI on my PC, even with
the desktop skin, the value for me would be being able to to control my
PC with the Controller.

SqueezeSlave does that already.

...but with about 10% of the functionality and it's effectively
abandon-ware. Squeezeplay is the new kid, and thats where the
development is. Plus, Squeezeplay will sync with other players,
supports more formats and functionality like Last.FM etc etc.

Oh, I didn't realize there were limitations to SqueezeSlave. I only
installed it for the first time a couple weeks ago and used it for a
couple of hours while I was doing some mass tagging on my PC. Have not
touched it since.

Well, you haven't visited the squeezeslave site lately.

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=105169&package_id=176494

As you'll see squeezeslave development is alive and well.

There have been over 1,000 downloads of version 0.8 since I released it
a month ago.

As of last week squeezeslave now supports alsa on linux and text mode
display like the slimp3 and also remotes via lirc and an external lcd
display.

Just a guess, but probably a new build wasn't ready in time. It's a
beta program and gaps are to be expected.

That's been asked for before, and is on the list but right now it's not
a top priority. Patches welcome!

I have the same issue and have for the past few nightly versions I've
been able to test. Right now I'm using Version: 7.3 - 23837.

I also have the occasional rebuffering message show up on the
SqueezPlay display, after which the sound cuts out. The track
continues play, as indicated by the track progress meter, but without
sound. SqueezePlay and SqueezeCenter are running on separate computers
(both XP, Intel duo and quad core machines, CPU utilization is low).

Squeezeplay 7.3r3309M on Mac OSX 10.5.5 on MacBook. Running most
recent 7.2.1
Starts, here the 'dong' at start, lets me choose my language, shows
the Welcome Screen, but then a return or right arrow key brings me to a
Choose player screen which I cannot advance beyond. Right key produces
a 'error' beep. I can go back to the welcome screen but not advance.
I have tried:
>running as admin (sudo open squeezeplay.app
>adding it to my firewall
Other suggestions?
Thanks much

'A' doesn't work for me using the latest version (downloaded today).

If you're looking for a better "desktop" player... Moose is the way to

There are better players for the PC. Even if this were the best one,
it doesn't explain why anyone would want to use the user interface when
you have the web interface just one click away. Hopefully there will be
a headless mode so that users wanting a PC based player won't need to
have the interface running.

I'm a software engineer, and have developed a very 'keyboard centric' way of
working. I try to avoid having to touch the mouse if I can avoid it, it just
slows me down.

With SqueezePlay controlling the SoftSqueeze instance no my PC, it's very
simple to ALT-TAB to SqueezePlay, use the keyboard to navigate and select
some more music, change volume etc. I can't do a lot of that with the
keyboard alone using SoftSqueeze, and virtually none of it using the web
interface.
