I'm look at setting this up but I not sure whether its possible using only 2
x SBS2003 servers?
I read a Technet article which indicated/implied that a minimum of 3 servers
is necessary.
Is this the case?

Thanks in advance

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you have two SBS 2K3 Server and you want to configure DFS
between these two SBS Server. If I have misunderstood your concern, please
let me know.

I am sorry but I am not sure which exact "Technet article" you have read.
Could you please let me know the web link?

Please understand that we only can use DFS in one Domain, and its
sub-domain. For example, if you have a Windows 2K3 Server or Windows Server
2000 as a second DC or member server in the SBS 2003 domain, we can use the
DFS to replicate the files. To do this, you can create a domain root on the
SBS 2003 server, enable DFS on the W2K3/W2K server and then configure the
replication between these two servers.

Since you have two SBS Servers, and there can only be one Windows Small
Business Server in the Windows Small Business Server domain, I am sorry to
say that we can not use DFS between these two SBS Servers.

I suggest that we create some user accounts in each domain and grant users
appropriate permissions to access the shared folders on the SBS Servers.

For detailed information regarding DFS, please refer to the following links:

Hi Brandy,

The article I was refering to is
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/Library/14211e1f-2dbd-418d-b721-2005c725ce351033.mspx

However I think that I understand why it states 3 servers are reqd (for
Namespaces to work) - also I think this is for SBS2003 R2 - and I don't
think I have R2.

I think you have answered my questions (inadvertantly)....but i'm sure you
can help me further...!!
I am setting up a second SBS server to cope with a possible server failure,
I now understand that it is not possible to put two SBS's on the same
domain - so i'll put them on different domains. I can use 3rd party software
to set up a mirror for the shared space.
I will use SQL replication for my SQL database.
What is the best way of maintaining a copy of my exchange database though? -
i currently plan to run hourly Exmerge scripts to extract and retreive the
data from one server to the other. I only have 9 clients.
Also - should a server failure occur - my users will be taught how to login
to the second server, - but this requires a reboot (on win2kpro) - does this
require a reboot on XPpro? - and is there a more elegant way of switching
between two servers. - eg - can I make the names of the two domains stay in
the Crtl-Alt-Del login option - which my users are all familiar with, so
that they don't have to use My Computer/Network
Identification/Properties/etc

Many Thanks

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for posting back!

I understand that you want to configure another SBS 2K3 Server in another
domain for Backup Purpose. However, I do not think is doable. This is
becaue, when the first SBS Server is down, the second server will be a new
domain and we need to migrate the client computers to the new domain, so
all users will loose their profiles and data such as emails etc. We cannot
synchronize data between these servers since we cannot have 2 SBS servers
in the same network.

We strongly suggest that you configure a good backup plan and once the
server crashes we can restore from the backup.

Hi Brandy,

I have a good backup plan in place, but this can take many hours to restore.
My problem is that I am the only IT support person here and I'm not always
here!
I want to provide a failover solution that the users can perform if I'm not
here such that there is minimal (almost zero) downtime.
Why can users not have 2 profiles, - one for each server?
When they logon to the new server (in a new domain) they will find that the
environment is the same, they will have access to shared folders, internet,
& be able to connect to SQL server.
For email - I propose to restore mailboxes on the second server using
Exmerge, which may take a short time, but they'll have immediate access to
new mail & be able to send mail immediately.
This should work, - shouldn't it?

Sorry I didn't see this posting. I am not sure if it was located under my
original post. I understand that you can have only one SBS server. What I am
doing is a migration to a new box. So I don't have 2 SBS servers. I have one
fully functioning SBS server and a windows 2003 server that I have
configured for temporary use to transfer the Active directory info. This
should be possible. Everything but the SYSvol and netlogon shares transfers
over.

Hi Brandy,
The article I was refering to is
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/Library/14211e1f-2dbd-418d-b
721-2005c725ce351033.mspx
However I think that I understand why it states 3 servers are reqd (for
Namespaces to work) - also I think this is for SBS2003 R2 - and I don't
think I have R2.
I think you have answered my questions (inadvertantly)....but i'm sure you
can help me further...!!
I am setting up a second SBS server to cope with a possible server failure,
I now understand that it is not possible to put two SBS's on the same
domain - so i'll put them on different domains. I can use 3rd party
software
to set up a mirror for the shared space.
I will use SQL replication for my SQL database.
What is the best way of maintaining a copy of my exchange database though?
-
i currently plan to run hourly Exmerge scripts to extract and retreive the
data from one server to the other. I only have 9 clients.
Also - should a server failure occur - my users will be taught how to login
to the second server, - but this requires a reboot (on win2kpro) - does
this
require a reboot on XPpro? - and is there a more elegant way of switching
between two servers. - eg - can I make the names of the two domains stay in
the Crtl-Alt-Del login option - which my users are all familiar with, so
that they don't have to use My Computer/Network
Identification/Properties/etc
Many Thanks
Kevin

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for posting back and keeping us updated!

I am sorry for the delayed response due to the weekend. Please understand
that the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals
to answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

From your reply, I understand that you want to migrate the SBS 2K3 Server
to another machine. We have a KB article to introduce how to install a
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003-based computer in an
existing domain.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884453

After installing the new SBS 2003 server into the existing SBS 2003 domain,
we can retire the old server.

If you have any further questions or concern, please feel free to let me
know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Sorry I didn't see this posting. I am not sure if it was located under my
original post. I understand that you can have only one SBS server. What I am
doing is a migration to a new box. So I don't have 2 SBS servers. I have one
fully functioning SBS server and a windows 2003 server that I have
configured for temporary use to transfer the Active directory info. This
should be possible. Everything but the SYSvol and netlogon shares transfers
over.
