Discussion:
Whatever happened to ... Amber Benson

I just thought of her tonight. I liked her so much in BtVS, and not just
because she was Willow's girlfriend. I've rarely seen her since then.

According to IMDb, she continues to appear in movies I've never heard of:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0072435/

She's written a number of books, mostly fantasy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Benson

https://www.amazon.com/Amber-Benson/e/B001IU2TNW

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/authors/58695/amber-benson

She has an active, politically-oriented Twitter account:

https://twitter.com/amber_benson

I guess the upshot is that she's doing a lot of things, but I'm unlikely
to see her again on TV unless I'm watching old BtVS episodes.

That's interesting because most Buffy fans hate her with a fiery passion
usually reserved for Warren and his friends. :)

Really? When she was on BtVS she seemed very popular with fans, at least
the ones I knew online. Why don't fans you know like her?

I'm not Anim8tr but I bet I can give his answer. Marti Noxon who was the
one responsible for bringing Tara in as a character and who many people felt
ruined the series. :)

I didn't mind the addition of Tara and Amber seemed nice enough in
interviews but there was nothing in the show to suggest Willow was gay
before. It made it seem to a some people like the writers were pandering.
Lots of fans did love the character and loved Willow and Tara became gay
icons.

I understand and remember the Marti Noxon hate, although I don't know
why that would be turned against Amber.

Maybe I was just in a bubble of Amber Benson fans at the time, but I
actually remember thinking it was a little crazy how much fans liked her.

It's probably similar to how a lot of people feel about the CW shows now. I
couldn't care less if characters are straight or gay or trans or whatever is
currently in vogue. It's pretty obvious when Hollywood is pushing an
agenda though. My problem comes when the agenda becomes the focal point of
the shows to the detriment of the rest of the writing.

I think that and "shippers" who wanted Willow with Xander or Oz also had
something to do with any dislike for Tara. I honestly don't remember
being a lot of dislike for her. Her arrival just coincided with what some
fans felt was a gradual decline of the series. Then a fall off a cliff in
season 6 when Noxon took over. Ian and Anim8tr will liikely both chime in
saying the show only ran 3 seasons. :D.

Yes, I agree. I was conflating the actress and the character and giving
reasons why Tara might have been hated. I suppose their might have been
some resentment towards Benson because of that but I don't really recall any
hate of the actress at all.

I just thought of her tonight. I liked her so much in BtVS, and not just
because she was Willow's girlfriend. I've rarely seen her since then.
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0072435/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Benson
https://www.amazon.com/Amber-Benson/e/B001IU2TNW
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/authors/58695/amber-benson
https://twitter.com/amber_benson
I guess the upshot is that she's doing a lot of things, but I'm unlikely
to see her again on TV unless I'm watching old BtVS episodes.
--Robin
--Robin
I had completely forgotten about Oz. I don't think I ever cared for Seth
Green's character, for some reason. You're right, there was a lot of
competition among fans for Willow's affections!

And speaking of "whatever happened to," Nicholas Brendon's life and
career really imploded.

I have to say, the trans-girl on STUPIDGIRL is pretty amazing. I had no

That was my problem with it. Willow was obviously straight for the first
three seasons, then the show got a new boss with an agenda and suddenly
she turned gay, which not only f'd-up the character but always seemed
insulting to gay people as well-- that sexuality really is just a choice
and people can just bounce back and forth from one orientation to
another like flavors of ice cream.

But I didn't blame or dislike Benson for any of that. Wasn't her fault.

Season 3: Episode 50 "Dopplegangland"

After Vamp Willow and Regular Willow have their first encounter, Willow
tells Buffy "I think she's kind of gay", and then Buffy says "Well
Willow remember, a vampire does not represent who the person was as a
human", and then Angel says "Actually...nevermind".

Almost nothing a character says isn't written... and Wheedon has been
quoted as wanting a gay character from the beginning - but was toying
between Willow and Xander.

It's doubtful everybody (3 characters) were ALL ad-libbing. But what do
I know? You've said I don't actually watch any television... and you're
never wrong.

Found the exact quotes:

WILLOW: It's horrible. That's me as a vampire? I mean, I'm so evil, and
skanky,
(softly, to Buffy) and I think I'm kind of gay.

BUFFY: Just remember, a vampire's personality has nothing to do with the
person it was.

ANGEL: Well, actually -- (off Buffy's glare) -- that's a good point."

You could make a case it's foreshadowing... in fact, I think I just did.

Traditionally, a pissed-off writer will be inspired to write the network

I just thought of her tonight. I liked her so much in BtVS, and not just
because she was Willow's girlfriend. I've rarely seen her since then.
According to IMDb, she continues to appear in movies I've never heard
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0072435/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Benson
https://www.amazon.com/Amber-Benson/e/B001IU2TNW
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/authors/58695/amber-benson
https://twitter.com/amber_benson
I guess the upshot is that she's doing a lot of things, but I'm unlikely
to see her again on TV unless I'm watching old BtVS episodes.
--Robin
--Robin
Ian would say 1/2 of a season. I think there are several fall off a cliff
moments, Dracula being an easy one to point at, and pin on Noxon.

That's me. Ian says it only has one season (which is the half length first
season)

I say it ends when they blow up the high school, but there are several jump
the shark points, most if not all of which can be traced to Marti Noxon.

Ian, would you agree:

"It's better to stop at the end of ANY season of Buffy than to continue on?"

I wouldn't say that for Angel which got bad in the middle and then better at
the end.

That's me. Ian says it only has one season (which is the half length first

I say it ends when they blow up the high school, but there are several jump
the shark points, most if not all of which can be traced to Marti Noxon.
"It's better to stop at the end of ANY season of Buffy than to continue on?"
I would say end at the end of 1 or 3. I don't think ending with season

I definitely agree that there's no point in going past season #3, esp.
past the first 6 episodes of season #4.

I say it ends when they blow up the high school, but there are several

I would say end at the end of 1 or 3. I don't think ending with season
2 makes much sense.
I definitely agree that there's no point in going past season #3, esp.
past the first 6 episodes of season #4.

"Angel" ended for me after 10 episodes - when they killed off Doyle,

That was always planned.

Shhhh. Ian hates it when I say that!
Ah. Carry on then.

That's interesting because most Buffy fans hate her with a fiery

Really? When she was on BtVS she seemed very popular with fans, at
least the ones I knew online. Why don't fans you know like her?
I'm not Anim8tr but I bet I can give his answer. Marti Noxon who was
the one responsible for bringing Tara in as a character and who many
people felt ruined the series. :)
I didn't mind the addition of Tara and Amber seemed nice enough in
interviews but there was nothing in the show to suggest Willow was gay
before. It made it seem to a some people like the writers were
pandering.
Lots of fans did love the character and loved Willow and Tara became
gay icons.
I understand and remember the Marti Noxon hate, although I don't know
why that would be turned against Amber.
Maybe I was just in a bubble of Amber Benson fans at the time, but I
actually remember thinking it was a little crazy how much fans liked her.
--Robin
It's probably similar to how a lot of people feel about the CW shows
now. I couldn't care less if characters are straight or gay or trans or
whatever is currently in vogue. It's pretty obvious when Hollywood
is pushing an agenda though. My problem comes when the agenda becomes
the focal point of the shows to the detriment of the rest of the
writing.
I think that and "shippers" who wanted Willow with Xander or Oz also had
something to do with any dislike for Tara. I honestly don't remember
being a lot of dislike for her. Her arrival just coincided with what some
fans felt was a gradual decline of the series. Then a fall off a
cliff in season 6 when Noxon took over. Ian and Anim8tr will liikely
both chime in saying the show only ran 3 seasons. :D.

I would agree with your general take on both series. I've always said all
the seasons had a few standout episodes but they could have easily ended
BTVS at the end of season 3 and definitely the end of season 5. I had
actually managed to block out much of season 6 till this thread made me
search google a bit. uggghh

Angel did get bad and extremely muddled in the middle then finished well.

Reportedly Buffy was supposed to end with season 5 but it was renewed at
the last minute. By this time Whedon was barely on the set (now doing
"Firefly") and S.M.G *strongly* disliked doing the series without him
and didn't want to continue.

Originally many fans hated Tara because she replaced OZ and they wrote
angry posts on public forums that attacked the actress. But by season
six the Tara character was well accepted by most of the Oz-Willow
'shippers.

I posted in the BTVS newsgroup while the show was on but didn't pay
attention to web forums. I believe you and do remember a lot of hate
towards "Tara". I just didn't remember it transferring to hate for the
actress.

This thread got me to start watching from season 1.

Anim8tr, if you read this, it seems Hulu is showing them in the original
4x3 format. At least there are black bars on the sides of season 1
episodes. Does it change later on? I was watching all of NYPD Blue on
Amazon prime a couple of months ago and it started out all 4x3 then in later
seasons the episodes were wide screen.

The problem with debating it on the BTVS newsgroup was, just like always on

insisted Willow was GAY ONLY and like BTR said, that meant the show gave
the impression that being gay was a choice and you could switch back and

Willow shown pining for Xander then being in love with Oz wasn't even the
image of someone confused by their sexuality.

None of that had anything to do with Amber Benson, the actress.

Have you watched the series in years? I haven't. I remember when the show
was on the air, I lost UPN access on cable here and George Avalos sent me
VHS copies for a while till I discovered torrents. :D

I'm not sure if it's streaming anywhere but probably is. I have the whole
series on DVD. I've always said even the worst seasons of TV shows tend to
play better when you can watch at your own pace and without commercials.
Season 6 would sure be a good test of that theory.

I just thought of her tonight. I liked her so much in BtVS, and not
just
because she was Willow's girlfriend. I've rarely seen her since then.
According to IMDb, she continues to appear in movies I've never heard
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0072435/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Benson
https://www.amazon.com/Amber-Benson/e/B001IU2TNW
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/authors/58695/amber-benson
https://twitter.com/amber_benson
I guess the upshot is that she's doing a lot of things, but I'm
unlikely
to see her again on TV unless I'm watching old BtVS episodes.
--Robin
That's interesting because most Buffy fans hate her with a fiery
passion
usually reserved for Warren and his friends. :)
Really? When she was on BtVS she seemed very popular with fans, at least
the ones I knew online. Why don't fans you know like her?
I'm not Anim8tr but I bet I can give his answer. Marti Noxon who was the
one responsible for bringing Tara in as a character and who many people
felt
ruined the series. :)
I didn't mind the addition of Tara and Amber seemed nice enough in
interviews but there was nothing in the show to suggest Willow was gay
before. It made it seem to a some people like the writers were pandering.
Lots of fans did love the character and loved Willow and Tara became gay
icons.
Well, Doppleganger Vampire Willow was described as 'skanky and kind of gay'
(although she was clearly omnisexual).
I didn't realize man hating show killer Noxious was behind it, but that's as
good a reason to dislike it as any.
I do remember now that people argued it was all foreshadowed by Vampire
Willow.
The problem with debating it on the BTVS newsgroup was, just like always on
usenet, people are often strident in their opinions.
The Buffy people more so than ever to this day. But they aren't even
opinions, they're just misstatements of fact.
Have you watched the series in years? I haven't. I remember when the show
was on the air, I lost UPN access on cable here and George Avalos sent me
VHS copies for a while till I discovered torrents. :D
I'm not sure if it's streaming anywhere but probably is.
Unfortunately the only stuff you find airing (same with Angel) is the horrid
16:9 versions.
I have the whole
series on DVD. I've always said even the worst seasons of TV shows tend to
play better when you can watch at your own pace and without commercials.
Season 6 would sure be a good test of that theory.
I watched 6 & 7 one time only. I doubt I'll ever go back in there again.

Gay rights activists
insisted Willow was GAY ONLY and like BTR said, that meant the show gave
the impression that being gay was a choice and you could switch back and
forth.
Willow shown pining for Xander then being in love with Oz wasn't even the
image of someone confused by their sexuality.
None of that had anything to do with Amber Benson, the actress.
Agreed. I recall enjoying her as the alternate Natalie Morales (sigh) on THE
MIDDLEMAN.
I can't even name anything else she's been in but i'm sure I've seen her in
other projects.
I've neither seen nor heard of any of her movies. I've heard of a few of her
TV appearances but don't think I've seen any other than Buffy.

I think there are a lot of different contingents. I know there are Oz
worshippers that blame her for keeping him and Willow apart even though he
had nothing to do with it. There are a lot that find her unattractive,
although it's unclear to me if they don't like her because they think she's
unattractive, or if they think she's unattractive because they don't like
her, and either way, geez, it's not like she's a hunchback or something. I
don't think there's much of a problem with her being gay, but I'd bet there
are a lot of people in the "If Willow's gonna be with a girl she should be
with Buffy!" camp. The Peach used to read a funny comic about Buffy and
Vampire Willow ...
hey! It's still out there!

I will say she looks much the same (just older). Here is a video from
just a few months ago with Bensen, Rohm, Kramer and Marsters:

Cool, Shawn, thanks! I have saved this to watch once evening.

James Marsters is another actor I wished I'd see more of. He has lots of
credits on IMDb:

But I didn't watch The Order or Runaways or Witches of East End or
Smallville, and I have no idea what Vidiots was. So I really haven't
seen him in anything in years.

I watched him on Smallville and Runaways (which I need to finish
watching). It's always a little weird when I see him outside of Buffy
since he's not doing the British accent and his normal American accent
sounds fake to me. Yeah, I *know* he's American, still sounds weird.

I still laugh when I remember the scene with Spike in a car parked in a

Yeah, he sounds, not like he's hiding a metric accent, but like he's forcing
a different American regional accent.

years since I had seen him last.
