I always thought it was like an answer record to Wynonie's "Grandma
Plays The Numbers." I like it a lot.
And then there's the slow burner "I'll Go" from 1953. The label credit
just says "Lil Greenwood"--I always heard the male group was The
Lamplighters, and I'm surprised to see they aren't credited. I wonder
if it's really Thurston Harris duetting with her.

It's basically a rewrite of the Wynonie number to fit a female lead

All four Greenwood sides with The Lamplighters just say "vocal by Lil
Greenwood with Quartet". Several sources (including Kreiter) list the
flip of "Mercy Me" (actually the "A" side) "All Is Forgiven" as being
The Dominoes backing her but pretty sure it is The Lamplighters.

There's an album out "Evolution Of A Vocal Group - From The
Lamplighters To The Rivingtons" charting the VERY convuluted history
of this interesting group by way of The Sharps,The Tenderfoots,Paul
Anka's "Jacks",Duane Eddy and "Rebel Rouser",The Ebb Tides "Love
Doctor" The Crenshaws and all the way to "Papa Oom Mow Mow"

It also includes most of the Greenwood backed sides

OK here's what I'm going with in July

All come from my revised and (highly) extended list of 1956 favorites.

I chose high entries from four categories----a New Orleans R&B, a R&B
vocal group,a rockabilly and a femme vocal

Eddie Bo - I Cry Oh - Apollo 499 - 1956

Nolan Strong & The Diablos - Try Me One More Time - Fortune 522 - 1956

Bob Doss - Don't Be Gone Long - Starday 265 - 1956

Ella Fitzgerald - Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye - Verve LP 4001-2 - 1956*

(*this was a 45rpm single here in UK in 1957 b/w "Manhattan" )

Probably because people who did not know the Eddie Bo did not vote in that matchup. That was before almost everything was on youtube.

That's almost certainly true. That first battle started back in
prehistoric October 2007 (where did all those years go??)

I'm sure you're right about the overall lack of availability on many
items back then on YT too (IIRC mp3s on much of the stuff in the
contest was posted to that dear old "usual place" :) .

Inclidentally the Eddie Bo was NOT in my original list of 1956 singles
for inclusion (I voted for The Wheels by a whisker BTW)

Someone must have presented it as a personal nomination. Wonder who?

Nobody. I searched all the nomination posts in Google Groups

The following paragraph from your post requesting nominations might
explain how it got in.

Yes, and 1956 has fewer songs than some of the other years where you really went crazy with the number of entries.

Stay Out of Automobiles - Jerry Boogie McCain
http://youtu.be/VwO2ApvvKAg
One of my very favorite Jerry McCain numbers (along with "Courtin' In
A Cadillac" and "She's Tough"). Reputely only 750 copies of this
(McCain's last for the label) were ever pressed. Certainly none at all
remained when we finally made it to Jackson,Ms.and what remained of
Trumpet Records.Gone too were nearly all of the great blues
(Elmore,Sonny Boy etc) on the label tho a few items remained and we
salvaged several nice country boogie titles ("Lucky" Joe Almond etc).

And certainly owner Ms Lillian McMurry was one of the nicest and most
gracious ladies of the record industry I ever met.

This was on my list of possible selections for this or some future contest. I haven't determined
my selections yet for July, so I don't know if I would have chosen it.

Coincidentally, when Roger mentioned the 1956 Battle, I went back to look at some of the posts for
that Battle. We were allowed to nomiate 5 songs, and I found that "Caddy Bo" was one of my backup
choices in case one of my 5 songs had been nominated by someone else.

This was also on my list of possible selections for this or some future contest. There's a good
chance I would have included it for July.

I guess I'd better decide on my selectons before more are taken. But these being selected by other
people means there are more songs in the contest that I think are great (not that there aren't a
lot already).

Very sub-standard followup to one of my very favorite group records
ever---the wonderful "Up On The Mountain". The dismal femme lead
(Barbara Arrington) kills it for me. Sorry

my selections yet for July, so I don't know if I would have chosen it.
Very sub-standard followup to one of my very favorite group records
ever---the wonderful "Up On The Mountain". The dismal femme lead
(Barbara Arrington) kills it for me. Sorry
Jay Warner in his Billboard Book of American Singing Groups agrees with you. But I disagree with both of you. I think the lead is fine and the record is a catchy, humorous one, even if it is outside the norm.

The released "Caddy Bo" was the second recording of the song.

Originally spelled as "Caddie Beau" it was first recorded a week or so
before the released version but shelved for some reason

There were no less than SIX versions of this number out in 1955 (this
one,Joe Houston .The Nuggets,Bill Johnson Quartet,The Dooley Sisters &
The Jac-O-Lacs and the original by co-writer Leo Diamond)

I'm not real big on the song itself but the one I like best is Joe
Houston (vocal by The Platters)

My nominations:

Ike Turner (& His Kings Of Rhythm): She Made My Blood Run Cold

Anyone know who sang this?

The Swan Silvertones: Love Lifted Me

One of my favorite gospel records ever.

Carl Perkins: Drink Up And Go Home

An unreleased track from 1956. The song was written by Freddie Hart but
Perkins' recording preceded Hart's. Many other country and bluegrass
artists have recorded it, as did Jerry Garcia. I am submitting it for
your consideration because (a) the harmony is very good, and (b) I just
love the lyrics. As we all get older, I think we can all relate to the
chorus of this song.

Marvin Phillips (with the Red Callender Orchestra): My Baby Won't Let Me In
This is an unreleased track recorded for Specialty in 1953. I will get
it up onto youtube in the next few days.

It lists Clayton Love as vocalist on the YT clip you listed.

He is also vocalist on the flipside "Do You Mean It"

Carl Perkins: Drink Up And Go Home
http://youtu.be/vVi0KDX8Kx8
An unreleased track from 1956.
I have this listed as from a rehearsal session by Carl in late 1956 or
early 1957. I think its most likely to be 1957 (see below)
Post by DianeE
The song was written by Freddie Hart but Perkins' recording preceded Hart's
Don't think so as Hart's Columbia single was out in September 1956

Also I show the next song Carl recorded at this session was his very
earliest attempt at "Pink Pedal Pushers" which would strongly suggest
an early 1957 date

Sadly I'm not a fan of the "Drink Up.." song by anyone (even Carl)

Sorry,Di :-(

This is where I got my info from:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Bluegrass/comments/6ak2o4/drink_up_and_go_home_song_of_the_week_bluegrass/
And this guy claims Perkins recorded it in 1955, though he doesn't say
where he got *his* info from.
In trying to find out about this song, I see that some websites list the
writers as Johnny Bond & Joe Maphis. I don't have any reference books on
country music so I'll just give up here.
Seriously, when you were driving a cab, didn't you get passengers whom
you wanted to scream at: "Don't tell me your troubles/I've got enough of
my own/Be thankful you're living!" Those lines just tickle the hell out
of me.

Regardless of who actually wrote the song (Mitchell Torok's 1956
version credits "Hart-Maphis-Bond") I don't believe it was written yet
in 1955.

Hart's Columbia single definitely just credits "F.Hart" as writer.

I wonder whatever happened to the huge law suit that never was if he
really stole it from Maphis & Bond?

Believe it or not I did have a country/pop tape in the taxi which
along with the likes of "Singing The Blues" and "A White Sport Coat"
on it also had Don Gibson's very apt "Don't Tell Me Your Troubles"

The Swan Silvertones: Love Lifted Me
http://youtu.be/b_YNRebBbt8
One of my favorite gospel records ever.
I show this recorded in 1953 but I can't trace an original release for
it only the 1970 Specialty 922 issue (which I'm ashamed to admit I
don't have) .

Whatever,it's a great outing by them. Thanks for including it

That looks to be right. I believe the first release of the number was
on The Swan Silvertones "Love Lifted Me" Specialty compilation album
circa June 1970 followed by its issue as a single.

Oh, boy, what a hassle...I tried to use MovieMaker from my old computer
but couldn't get it to work with Windows 10. I was finally able to
download a newer version from the Microsoft Store, but they forced me to
create a Microsoft account before I could do so. This is something I
did *not* want to do, and sure enough, I immediately began receiving
notifications that I was signed in to Skype and so forth. (Why wouldn't
I want to be signed in to Skype? Well, for one thing, I value my
privacy, and for another thing, I'm using a desktop computer that has no
camera or microphone!)

Now that I've bored you all to tears with my troubles, here is the final
result:
