I'm just wondering- what is everyone's favorite cover of a Devo song?
Mine would have to be Toni Basil's version of BE STIFF. It captures
the early Devo spirit perfectly.

I haven't heard the VGS's TIME OUT FOR FUN yet. I'll have to look for
it. I agree with you about PITY YOU, though.

Just curious- what's the general consensus here on Soungarden's
version of GIRL U WANT? I read that Gerald V. wasn't too thrilled with
it. He called it a "head scratcher". But I always liked it. Chris
Cornell's a great singer. He saves an otherwise lackluster remake.

The VGS song is on the "we are not devo" CD.

I like Devo's cover of Soundgarden's cover. Got an idea for a video too.

My favorite Devo cover is the one I did of Freedom Of Choice just
recently.

It's funny how he thought "all big talk" was "poppycock" in the lyrics.

After more than a decade, Tortelvis still butchers the lyrics to
"Immigrant Song".

You evil, evil man. I'd rather eat a bug with a needle in my eye than
have to hear that again. YOU guys, however can hear it on the HardCore
Fan Project at

http://maddancermedia.com/alt.fan.devo/HardCoreFanProject/

It's worth going there for all the other stuff, especially FP, Peter
PP, MDG, Beastly (under a nom-de-guerre), Paul Bruneau, and the rest.

God knows what I was thinking when I recorded the vocal....something
like, "Throat hurts! Must make deadline!!!! Channel dead crooner!!!".
It's so bad, it's...bad. Music ain't too shabby, tho.

I was gonna answer with your "Itchy-Koo", but it's too non-bad.

Dood, I was Syrian! Your Ian Curtis vocal works just fine for me. I'm
sure on normal days you sing more like Danny Elfman, but that wouldn't
have worked as well...

Well, thanks. Singing like that didn't help poor Ian any, tho.

Fat chance, but that would be nice. Say, around "Weird Science" era.

Dude, that is a perfectly good cover!! I really wince when I hear my
version of Coalmine. I actually sent it to Mutato years ago. Later on
the phone with a staffer, she said something sort of negative about my
voice but I have blocked it out of my consciousness.

Also, I think we must have the same drum machine :)

Don't let negative comments hold you back. If you study history on many
accomplishments created by man, artistic or otherwise, someone was almost
always there to trash it and bad mouth it.
Besides, while I love Devo, let's face it, Mark Mothersbaugh is not that
great of a singer. At least in my opinion. And look at what great things he
still managed to accomplish.

What do you use?
I started with a Roland TR-505, then I got a Boss DR-550 Mk II, and now I
use a Boss DR-670 (which also has basslines).

It's a cutting edge Alesis HR-16, circa 198?

Well, hey, there ya go! I always liked it, although it's the only one
I ever had, so I can't tell how good it is. For my two Devo covers, I
used it strictly with a Mac-based MIDI sequencer rather than trying to
program patterns with the pads. The reviewers are right...the lack of
a "back" button really sucks when you are trying to put down a single
hit in a big pattern. A lot easier with Metro. But that was like 10
years ago when I made those!

Nah, on that I used the ol' Yamaha DD-9 drum pads, with their built-in
crappy sound. These days I use a Roland SPD-6 as a midi trigger.

Thanks for the kind words! You guys are the best.

Here are a couple I like ...

Fu Manchu do a good version of Freedom of Choice (last track on the King Of
The Road album I think).

New Zealand band Shihad (now called Pacifier) had a rocked up version of
Gates of Steel as a b-side of a CD single (Debs Night Out according to my
research). I only ever heard it once on the radio, I'd love to hear it
again!

i'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said, but i feel i should
contribute since the question was asked... i do greatly enjoy Nirvana's
"Turnaround", and i think that Soundgarden's "Girl U Want" is an interesting
re-interpretation, not terrible, but not much of a "Devo cover". perhaps an
interesting sub-thread would be "what songs that Devo has covered did you
like the original version better?". personally, i could do without "Itsy
Bitsy..." but most of their covers i like as much as, or more than, the
original. then again, i've never heard the original of "Worried Man"

I could do without "Don't Be Cruel". It doesn't reinterpret the
original like "Satisfaction" did, or add anything new. I expect more
from Devo.

Has anyone heard The Resident's "King & Eye" album? Now *THERE'S* some
interesting Elvis covers.

Yeah, it's good, but after many playings I got tired of those Resident
conversations with those little kids that are in between the songs. I
usually skip them now. How about the Resident's cover of "Satisfaction"? It
came out around the same time as Devo's cover, and it's extremely atonal,
and harsh. One person I played it to said it was "unlistenable".

I still get a chuckle out of the "mama-madonna" one, but yeah, they
old.

I don't remember that... which album was it on? I don't have any of
the early Residents stuff anymore- I lost most of my vinyl collection
a while back (including "Q: Are We Not Men?", my favorite album of all
time).

A lot of Residents music is difficult listening. Maybe not
"unlistenable", but definitely not easy.

The Resident's version of "Satisfaction" is on "The Third Reich 'N' Roll"
CD, but only the original ESD release.
I see the single on eBay all the time. It's on transparent yellow vinyl.
