That's the inc VAT price...

So, $499 = £265.65 + VAT

= £312.13

A £20 mark up compared to the US web price, where IIRC local sales tax
doesn't apply.

Yep, already figured that one out all on my own (see earlier post).

Local sales taxes do apply in the USA, but are applied depending on the
state you order from. California is (IIRC) something like 1.25%, or "not
enough that you'd really notice". 17.5% does tend to hurt a bit more.
Not as bad as the Paddies though, who are (again IIRC) at 21%.

Is is bollox! Sales tax in Calif is 7.75%

The twist is that sales tax is never quoted on prices. So, you pick
up a magazine priced at $4.99, profering five bucks, and the sales
assistant says "that'll be $5.37, please".

Ah, right. Didn't realise it varied by county. I recall the sales
chap in Tri-City sports in the Bay Area telling me it had just gone up
from 8.25% to 8.75%, but I remembered the magazine mark-up in the
airport, and that worked out at 7.75%.

So, basically, you never know what something's going to cost til you
get to the checkout? :-)

But, when you're used to "what you see is what you pay", it gets a bit
annoying.

Hmmmmmmm, sooooo tempting. Only problem is that the laptop gets the main use
and if i were to buy a minimac then it'd just be replacing a bedroom PC
which wouldnt do it justice.
Now, if there were a way that I could have the minimac in the living room,
connected to the TV (42inch rear projection) then have a wireless keyboard
and mouse, *that* I would do and ditch both the pc and the laptop!

Ditto, would love a mac but not sure how complicated it would be to set it
up for use on my home network. i.e. mac one end and windoze laptop the other
The Mac bit would be easy, Windows bit more than a little harder.
I've got a Windows PC on a mainly Mac network here, sharing printers
etc.
Hmmmmmmm, sooooo tempting. Only problem is that the laptop gets the main use
and if i were to buy a minimac then it'd just be replacing a bedroom PC
which wouldnt do it justice.

Easy, that one.

Order one with WiFi and Bluetooth so you can use a BT wireless keyboard
with it, and get the (optional) DVI to S-Video adaptor for it.

Fuck, youre not helping :-)
I wonder what the picture would be like on a widescreen TV though.
For example say im browsing online or whatever, would the window be way out
of shape?

Macs running OSX are pretty good on a decent widescreen using S-Video
inputs. I was running my old Powerbook on my parent's 28" widescreen
like this a couple of weeks back.

You just don't get the resolution on a telly, well, my PS2 running Linux

OSX will let you set up the resolution and font size to suit. It won't
be as sharp as on a decent monitor, obviously, but on a 42" telly, for a
bit of browsing / playing films and listening to music (which is it's
intended use) it'll be fine.

I'd be using it as a complete computer though, all the above but more than
just occasional browsing etc.
Im sat here about 8 feet from the telly now, instead of sitting here looking
at the laptop screen about a foot away I'd want to be looking at that telly
and not straining.
Thing is, I've just priced up in the apple store my ideal set up and it
comes to £613.01. Too rich for me at the moment :-/
Oh, and thats before shelling out for a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Already got an iBook, which is fast becoming my "main" PC, though mainly
though portability rather than anything else. Professionally I've not needed
to use anything Windows specific for a while now, so a switch for the
"sit-down" computer is probably do-able, but even if I did take the plung
that would probably have to be a G5.

Still, one of these would make a lovely iTunes server, with a T630 and a copy

Don't believe him! One of the machines *will* explode. Which one depends
on whether you're running OS X, and how up-to-date the patches on the
Win machines are. But one of them definitely will.

Au contraire - IME the Mac's more fussy in terms of joining Windows networks.
Shame really, because everything else works so neatly "out of the box". But
it's not a huge fuss either way

Don't know what you're doing wrong, but I've never had a problem getting
a Mac on a windows network - SMB takes care of everything with
incredibly little hassle.

XP-Pro caused me all sorts of problems, and I still can't get my XP box
to use a printer connected to a Mac, but it just works the other way
round.

You'd need gigabit ethernet to do that at any speed and it doesn't
have that either.

Would be a nice pooter for me old mum though...

but it doesn't have to play catch up to anyone, the ram is upgradeable

Lol!, ok, so mac porno mpegs are smaller than windows porno mpegs, Ill
remember that for future reference. What exactly makes better use of it?
Perhaps a 3 gig installation of unreal on the mac is different to a 3
gig install on windows? or maybe a 100meg install of photoshop is
somehow smaller than a 100 meg install on a pc?

For £340 I expect an old, underpowered computer, which is what it is.

I have no problem with it, im just amazed that everyone is getting so
wet over what is essentially some crappy old technology shoved in an
external drive bay.

The only amazing thing here is that apple have finally pulled their head
out of their own arse and released something with a price tag that isn't
for the uber l33t geeks with style.

Indeed. I must admit to secretly envying Apple's ability to market just
about *anything* to a group of people who, so long as it's encased in
some flash plastic, will swallow it whole.

RAM is upgradable using standard 'sticks', the hard drive is a product
of making such a small unit (it doesn't have a fan, so needs relatively
slow spinning drives to keep the heat levels down) and the exchange rate
premium is only about 20 quid. Also, the processor is going to be faster
than a £300 'Shuttle' type system plus the graphics aren't Intel
integrated jobs which also feature on cheap, small PCs. GFX cards are
over-rated anyway, what more do you need a GFX card to do on a 'media
hub' type device?

You bought a shite shuttle system. Bung a nice 3.2GHz P4 in there
with heat pipe + fan cooling.

For it to play the latest Doom 3 / DX 9 games at full setting at a decent frame

They're advertising it as a "media centre" aren't they?
<goes to look at apples site...>
I sit corrected, they've avoided all mention of the "M" word.

Anyhoo, something as small as that, that runs nearly silently, will instantly
appeal to the "make a PVR out of a Shuttle type micro PC" brigade.

80GB isn't too bad, but with that and a DVD burner + extra memory +
bluetooth + wireless LAN it doubles in price and you still need to add a
video in card.

I just think if Apple thought a bit more they could have had a killer on
their hands, seeing as how media centres are the latest PC style thats
being pushed in the shops.

I didn't think Macs did DX9. My G4 800Mhz iBook plays quake3 Arena very
smoothly, with no jerking at its max res of 1024x768. I was surprised
myself, that such a modest computer could do this.

I'm not into the latest games or GFX cards but I mean the games that can only
be played with all their effects turned to the max on a PC with a £500 GFX card
and liquid nitrogen cooling for the overclocked CPU :)

well, yes and no - by the time you add a decent amount of RAM, a decent
hard drive, a DVD burner, a USB TV Capture card, remote control, etc.
it's considerably more expensive than DIY with a Shuttle case. Nice and
small, admittedly.
Bet there's no decent PVR software for the Mac yet either.

That looks very tasty but my only concern is that the
"basic" £339 unit doesn't really have that much going
for it.

If you're thinking of PVR then you're missing TV-in
(as Champ says) and the HDD is pitifully small at 40Gb
too. I don't know much about Macs but I'm sure that
256Mb of memory sounds small as well.

So speccing up the 1.4GHz version (how does this compare
to an Intel P4 3.2GHz HT with 1Mb cache?) and adding
1Gb Memory, an 80Gb drive, DVD/CDRW drive, BlueTooth,
Airport, Wireless keyboard and mouse and then adding
the dreaded VAT comes out at £919 !!!

But hey, apparently you get "iLife" included with it...
