End of era, RTL is dumping Formula One

For those that watch German TV station RTL for live coverage of Formula
One races when Channel 4 doesn't show them live, 2020 will be the last
season you will do so. After 30 years, RTL is dumping Formula One. Well
done Chase, you think people will go to Pay TV, you're very wrong. It
didn't work in USA, it didn't work in the "home" of F1 UK.

RTL dumps F1 for football.

It's a shame, RTL's coverage is very good, like the latter year BBC and
start of F1 on Channel4.

F1TV, relatively inexpensive, and you only need to subscribe to it
during the F1 season and you can downgrade or park your subscription
otherwise.

Nope, can't be done. It is 100% unavailable to the UK because Sky has
the EXCLUSIVE rights in the UK. that's why people watched RTL!!!

If people want ONLY Formula One, they do not want to spend ridiculous
extra money on dozens of extra TV channels they will never watch, just
to watch F1. Ofcom are crooks for not sorting it out.

i got my rtl dish in the days of itv showing f1 (to watch during the adbreaks and to get live canadian gp qualifying etc)

today i use it for "duo-vision" of the races (a sky red button driver view on a small tv and the main feed via rtl on a big tv - to watch more action and for when the main feed shows the crowd or some wife or super model in the pitlane etc)

an rtl dish picks up orf 1 but not orf 2 (which is the f1 channel in austria)

You might want to see if you can get ORF1. That is the Austrian national
TV and I used to watch F1 races on ORF1 when I lived in Germany. Advert
free.

You may find that it will present you with an option to pay because you
are not in Austria and they don't like transmitting if you haven't paid
the licence (BBC would be the same if you are trying to view in Europe).
If there is a pay option, it will be considerably less than Sky F1.

I will admit to freeloading by receiving the RTL broadcast, though if they are foolish enough to broadcast in a way which allows other nationalities to view then so be it. I guess the overall advertising revenue budget that they receive accommodates the fact that non-Germans watch the channel too.

Will have a play with alternative Austrian or Swiss channels, but I suspect I'm consigned to the bin of not being able to watch races live from next year.

Wonder how much Vettel's Ferrari departure had to do with RTL dropping it?

Don't talk crap.

1. Sky has EXCLUSIVE UK rights, so even FOM's F1TV is not available to
the UK.

2. Formula One is a giant roving advert, I'm not paying to see roving
adverts.

Bernie screwed Formula One with TV rights, and Chase is finishing it
off. At least Formula E will still be available to watch, you can even
see it live on Youtube or Periscope - officially, and for free....
unlike nickel and dime F1.

While I agree with you that one can't expect to get it for free
anymore, as we have discussed many times there is a big gap between
free and the cost of getting Sky (over £500 a year) just to watch F1
and F2 so I am quite surprised at your continued dumbfoundment. :)

That is over six times as much as the yanks have to pay for F1TV Pro.

I'm sure many of the people you disparage would stump up $5 a weekend

While I agree with you that one can't expect to get it for free
anymore, as we have discussed many times there is a big gap between

I eventually broke down and took the Sky option but I was getting
inundated with calls from _Talk_ _Talk_ telling me that there was
suspicious activity from my PC and they had to look at it now. Talk Talk
wouldn't do anything about it so I decided it was time to change.

So far, I have been very happy with the broadband speed (need that now
that I'm working from home) and the additional programmes on the box are
interesting (the missus and I like nature or science stuff and there are
loads of them).

The only real complaint I have about Sky is that they dropped the option
to automatically change channels to something you want to watch but the
missus and I are getting used to that.

Of course, as soon as I change over to paying for F1, they stop the
sodding races ...

On the normal TV (outside Sky box), I can mark a programme and the TV
automatically changes to that programme when said programme starts. I've
had that option on the TV for over 10 years.

in a USB drive to watch programmes off. It was a not insignificant purchase for me x years ago.

I think that you're probably right, your TV is a 'normal' one. Mine is a relic. However it's a 32"
Samsung (UA32D5000PM), LED-backlit with a nice high-contrast 100 Hz FHD panel and I see no reason
to replace it. I got it discounted about 7 years ago as smart TVs were becoming mainstream at the time.

Sure it'd be nice to have more features and a built-in PVR - maybe even a bigger screen as my eyes

Paying £25 and putting up a dish isn't really a "length" to have gone to.

I don't expect to get it for free, but whilst I could (legally), why
wouldn't I?

Plus I've then also had a range of other European broadcasts that I've
actually watched; though admittedly much less now.
