Curious if this will simply be the highlights package available from F1TV or if they will do their own thing.

FWIW

Or a Sky produced highlights programme. Surely it'll have to be more than
a generic F1TV package?

Day after would be a disaster! How can I cope with trying to avoid all
news broadcasts to avoid the result until Monday evening!!

I'd think F1 highlights would be more well placed by Ch4 than MotoGP in
terms of TV audience, but you never know.

Key question is - will we be finally losing "The Chain"??

It says they will not be using Sky's presenters, but not who the
presenters will be.

They could use a CH4 presentation team, but perhaps use the Sky commentary? Doesn’t seem particularly sensible use of money to employ a second commentary team if they can avoid it, but maybe that isn’t feasible under the contract.

TBH I don’t really care about the people, it’s the timing that matters to me.

If this is one programme on a Monday evening which wraps up practice, quali and the race then that would be the end of regular F1 watching for me sadly.

Let’s hope they stick with a Saturday quali recap and a Sunday delayed highlights package at the very least.

The Sky highlights is pitiful crap. The last race they started with the
formation lap! What a waste. Was the race so uneventful, they had to pad
it out?

I've just had a facepalm moment recalling that Ch4 *CURRENTLY* do F1!

So no reason why they can't do highlights as well as they currently do
them, surely?

It wouldn't be good business to allow the 'new' high lights to be too

I haven't decided whether I really will give up with Formula One after
following for 20+ years (but it looks likely), but to everyone else, get
yourself a Free To Air satellite dish / box, point it at Astra1
satellite, and tune in to RTL.

The race will have lots of long ad breaks, the commentary will be in
German, it will not be in HD, BUT, you will watch all the races live.

Alternatively subscribe to Sky and get HD coverage of every session, live,
with expert commentary in English, no ads during qually or the race,
various red button options, other formula races and much general background
and discussion. I don’t like Rupert Murdoch either but I see little point
in cutting off my nose to spite my face.

I can afford to pay the fee, but I jus refuse on principle. In order to
watch F1 on Sky, I have to buy the whole bloody sports package, and I'm
NOT doing that. I don't care about football, football, football, and
the latest tiddley-winks championships from Dhaka, so... No. Not doing it.

You can buy just the F1 channel for £18 a month, but you do have to pay
for Sky and the new Sky box, which is £15? a month, if you don't already
have Sky.

Thanks for the information. So it's not as bad as I thought. I still think
£18 a month is quite expensive though (though in fairness, Sky's F1 coverage
is very good).

In my particular case, I work away from home during the week, so weekends
is wife-and-kids-time. I rarely get the chance to watch a grand prix as it
is aired, so I might as well watch the highlights. Currently, I record
the races on my sky box, and watch them when I have a chance.

The Sky F1 coverage is very good, but too voluminous for working dads with
young kids - I can't watch it all!

I'll stick with Channel 4 next year. If it ends up being a poor experience
then I guess I'll just end up de-facto withdrawing from F1.

Here with a Sky sub one gets included access to 'Sky-2-Go' online
streaming of all the channels paid for. Accessible of course wherever
there is wi-fi or mobile data coverage.

You don't pay for the loaned box but you do pay a set up fee.

£20pm (introductory price) + £20 setup fee

so £476 for the first year increasing to £552, in the region of £23 to
£26 per race.

A not insignificant amount.

I followed F1 keenly for many years when there was virtually no TV coverage
at all in the UK. Admittedly the motorsport print media carried much more
detailed race reports, lap charts etc. in those days (and also had
brilliant journalists like Denis Jenkinson).

I think I have always earned well but I have never considered Sky
affordable... and I don't have kids to clothe, feed or take on holiday.

I do not consider over £20 just to watch the race on a TV affordable,
nor do I consider it reasonable. It is more than I pay for my TV, phone
line and internet for a whole month. It is more than I pay for my
mobile phone package for a month.

If that were the price of F1 I would not and could not afford it.

I do not think that is difficult to comprehend.

Lol, I doubt I'd pay £20 unless I knew I was getting my money's worth.

When you watch an F1 race you never know quite whether you will be
entertained by brilliant sports men and teams presented in an
entertaining and entralling manner or just have 2 hours of your life
stolen. I don't mind that; it used to be part of my love for the
sport... but I would resent paying £20 for the later.

...but therin lies my greater problem. I no longer have the passion for
the sport. I can still enjoy a race but I am not in love with it... we
are just fuck buddies... and I don't pay for it.

The race will have lots of long ad breaks, the commentary will be
in German, it will not be in HD, BUT, you will watch all the races
live.
An listen to BBC R5 commentary?
How many people can be arsed? Wouldn't it be simpler just to get Sky
- or give up watching F1?
Spoken like a person who's never had to worry about paying the bills.
What on earth makes you think that?
"Wouldn't it be simpler just to get Sky" No talk of affordability tends to
make the reader think that it's not an issue to be considered.

I won't bore you with a sob story
but I can assure you that for many years I most certainly had to
worry about paying the bills. Now I *can* afford to watch Sky, so I
do.
I suspect that most people here could afford it but choose not to,
which is, of course, their prerogative.

Speaking for myself I can't afford Sky - and don't want to give up
something that I've been enjoying for decades. 'Simpler' has to take
a back-seat to what's (im)possible.
I followed F1 keenly for many years when there was virtually no TV
coverage at all in the UK. Admittedly the motorsport print media
carried much more detailed race reports, lap charts etc. in those
days (and also had brilliant journalists like Denis Jenkinson).
Before my back crapped out and I was running my own business I had Sky and
*only* used it for F1 (oh and sometimes Indycars / Champcars / whatever they
were calling themselves at the time). That said, even though I was making a
good living it still wasn't an insignificant amount of money to get Sky /
Sky sports. I would record every race (to VHS) and leave it in the porch for
my retired uncle to pick up the next morning (and leave another tape for the
next race). Races are, or were then, almost always on in the wee hours here
in NZ. He would then pass the tape on to my cousin to watch on the Monday
night.

Previous to Sky picking up the rights here in NZ it was shown free-to-air
live on the state broadcasters channel and my uncle and cousin (and many
many others) followed it religiously. I could have many informed and
interesting coversations about F1 in the pub or when meeting friends.
Post-race Mondays were great for bleary-eyed F1 chats. However within a
couple of years of Sky picking it up I could only talk about it with my
uncle (and a little later on line).

Now I don't know anyone (in person) who follows F1 (though I must admit my
social circle has shrunk along with my income). I think that even if I was
still socialising as much as I used to I'd still struggle to find someone
who follows F1 to the point of watching every race. Here a lot of people
access Sky sport through 'sports bars' which is fine for rugby (union and
league, if you're into that sort of thing) but good luck finding a sports
bar that's open (when the races are live) and showing F1!

I've been watching the GPs not covered by initially the BBC and
latterly C4 via RTL for some years - and indeed listening to commentary
on R5Live.

I will not pay Murdoch for stuff I can get for free - and I never watch
the "build up" or post race analyses either. Mark Hughes post race
reports are almost better than watching the event!
