I have Google Translate bookmarked - https://bit.ly/3drH5YP - and it
gives "My car gave quite large discharges and with this tape I have
solved". Was the product some sort of tape for repairing exhaust, water
hose, or petrol tank?

Was that a whoosh as in "that goes over my head", or - as I've recently
been told on Twitter - a whoosh as in "you didn't realise it was
supposed to be a joke"?

If the latter, you should know by now that I often don't realise. (And I
don't think it's very nice/UMRAtic; if I give a serious - and intended
to be helpful - reply to a joke, I think it'd be better to just ignore
me, and let others figure out that I didn't "get" it, rather than draw
attention to the fact.)

Yes, the latter. Sorry, I thought it was obvious with the reference to
Manual Intestine. And in it's turn it's disrespectful of you to think
that I don't know how to use Google Translate for the bits that are not
close enough to Italian to figure out :/

If you mean a -k-, then the ch in loch - and in German - is _not_
pronounced "hard", though many English people _do_ pronounce the word as
if it is "lock". It's more like the h in aha or hole. (A sound that does
not occur at the _end_ of words in English.)

I _think_ the ch in Spanish coche is more like the English one in
chocolate, so the word would be something like coh-chay, but IMBAM - I
never learnt Spanish.

[Sorry if I've missed another joke; if so, I hope the mention of
chocolate gets me off (-:]

Does your Google translate not speak the words for you?
If you ask it twice it slows down, the better to hear the individual words
(though of course you could just ask for each word in turn).

One need not disturb Mr Google, since Amazon offers to translate any
reviews in 'foreign' via a clicky link just after the review.

(I suspect Amazon use some other service, not wishing to drive trade to
Mr Google.)

Is loch pronounced with a hard ch?

Ch in loch is a voiceless velar fricative when pronounced correctly.

Ch in Spanish coche is a voiceless dental plosive followed by a
voiceless dental fricative.

Getting to see a doctor is another story however.
Lock-down must be suiting me: I was called in to the Surgery for a
blood test and BP check yesterday. I told the Nurse my BP would high
again because I'd had to stop taking one of my meds due to serious
side-effects, My BP was duly measured and at 140-something over
something it was way, way lower than it's been for yonks!

Fingers crossed for blood results to-morrow.

Whereas.... I have been on medication for high bp for about 8 years and my

telephonically with my doctor recently as I perform periodic checks myself
and found my bp was low. I have halved my dose about ten days ago but at
present, typical readings are ITRO 108/68 .... I think I may be coming off
the tablets altogether soon. :-)

and good luck for the blood tests, Jenny:)
Thanks for that. I think luck is certainly on my side at the moment
because all the tests came back as "ok for another 6 months" - and in
the case of the one relating to "sugar" it must surely be more down to
good luck than good management!

The main worry was deteriorating kidney function versus my need to take
water tablets because of problems with my legs. I am pleased that I can
carry on with the tablets.

Keep monitoring it, dear Toodles. This happened to the best beloved late
last year - he'd had various problems with various kinds of BP meds
anyway, and the latest iteration (ramipril) gave him a debilitating
cough (pre-covid!) as well as not really controlling the BP. He decided
to stop and instantly his BP returned to levels below 120/80 and stayed
that way - until it started up again and may have caused the TIA :( he
hadn't been monitoring it consistently and we missed a general rise.
Back on another drug now (candesartan) and checking rather more often...

I have been dentisted this week; and the optician will see me tomorrow.
Well done, Jenny!

*If* you look after your glasses (and even so, I'd avoid the rimless),
may I commend to allrats the company Goggles4U? As you can guess, they
are not terribly robust (though my current pair are holding up nicely -
touch wood!) but at the price, they are awesome. As reference, I have
widely differing eyes and varifocal. Last time I bought glasses from an
optician (in 2015) I paid well over £500. This has been a PSA.

Seeing the adverts (1) for ... is it SelectSpecs? on tv, I've often
wondered how they go about getting the right "fit" of varifocals if
these are ordered online. When I visit my local SpecSavers, the
procedure is that I see the optician and have the tests, then I select
the frames I want and then a minion sits me down and does various
measurements and makes marks on the lenses of the specs I have chosen.

On one occasion the minion slipped up somewhere because the new glass
just weren't "right" and I went back and complained and was re-measured.

I vaguely recall buying online varifocals. I had been tested by an
optician and got the prescription and contacted the online vendor. I
seem to recall theysent a person to my workplace to measure. I can no
longer recall if the glasses were good. I suppose they must have been
cheaper that way.

I have varifocals (and go for the expensive option plus sunlight
reaction and coating - hence the cost) and likewise I am not sure how
they can be made up without the measuring and so on.

Well, my £500 quid ones didn't have many of those (IIRC), probably just coating
and talked into thinner lenses. My Goggles4U have the best coating, thinnest
lenses and photo sensitive. By careful manipulation of the (many!) offers
they can still be about £70...Online instructions show how to measure pupil

Not so simple for varifocals. You not only need the inter-pupil
distance, but their position vertically relative to the chosen
frame, which very much depends upon how they are sitting once
correctly adjusted.

Out of curiosity, can you specify exact dimensions as search
filters, or do you have to look amongst, for example, "small" and
check each one for a good match?

I always have problems in actual shops, as I need quite a narrow
frame. I often end up in the teen section. A couple of my current
pairs measure 48 15-130 and 50 16-130.

Interesting, Chris. TBH, I don't understand (even having had it explained
more than once) *why* I need varifocals when if doing something very close
I have to take them off. My current robust pair haven't got varifocals at all
so I leave them off even when reading, Sadly, you can't use such useful
features at Goggles4U, so I bought my current pair from the children's
section. I would have thought precise placement of the dividing line would
be more important with bifocals, but I have never been fitted with them, so
what do I know? BTW, I'm not trying to force anyone to use the company(!)

I wonder how long there would be opticians in smaller places if we all
relied on them to do the tests and then went somewhere else to buy the
specs? I wouldn't like to have to travel to Aberdeen or Inverness for

Anne - I understand where you are coming from, but there was a *reason*
(which naturally I can't find at the moment!) that legislation was passed
making a prescription a legal right. I'm sure doctors argued similar when
the NHS was set up. Having experienced the US and UK systems for eyecare,
I know which I prefer (Clue: When the US company 2020 had a branch in

The reason was to give people the freedom not to get their specs from
the optician who had done the test because some people felt they were
being overcharged because the were thirled to that optician.

It's like buying books on Amazon. If everyone does that, there won't be
real bookshops for much longer. Market forces and all that.

However that's where the analogy ends. If all the real bookshops are
out-competed, it will still be possible to get books from somewhere. But
you can't get an eye examination remotely, so when all the opticians
have been outcompeted and had to close down, what are folk supposed to
do to get their prescriptions in the first place?

A friend of mine went to 2020 in Edinburgh. I remember him telling me
that they had charged him £700 for one pair of specs.

I've bought two pairs on line. The first pair were varifocals, bought at
a time when I was a bit strapped for cash, and I saved about £100. They
were more than adequate, although they didn't fit quite as well as my
previous pair, bought on our local high street. More recently, and well
after my cataract operations, I ordered a pair just for reading and
close work which turned out to be from over the pond. They saved me
about £30, but were virtually unusable. Reading glasses I bought for
£3.00 from Tesco were much more effective.

I got a letter from Moorfields today saying the appointment I have
next month for a check on the eye that had the retinal bleed, that
cleared up on its own, is cancelled and they will re-book it. It was
only a check anyway as it was clear last time but the very nice
consultant said let's just see you again in 6 months anyway.

What I probably do need is an eye test to check my glasses. I don't
think they've re-opened opticians here yet.

SpecSavers have told me the last couple of times that I don't need a new
prescription until I've had my cataracts done. In fact, if I bother to
wear them at all, I find my glasses-before-last seem to be slightly
better than the last pair. I often need to just pick up a magnifying
glass to read cooking instructions on a packet, though.

Incidentally, even with magnifier, I see no numbers on either pair of
frames.

These days, the only thing I need my glasses for is driving - and the
car hasn't moved since mid March.

My reading is done on a kindle and I have to bump the font size up at
least four notches when the lighting is poor. In good sunlight I can
still manage the smallest font size it offers.

It is brilliant!

My reading is done on a kindle and I have to bump the font size up at
least four notches when the lighting is poor.  In good sunlight I can
still manage the smallest font size it offers.

Similar here. Companies on Facebook with different names keep trying to
sell me what looks like the same handheld circular saw. Very tempting,
but then I'd have to think of something to do with it.Assuming it
arrived and was as described of course.

Your fbp is still working with the new fb design?
I tried the suggested user-agent thing but it didn't work for me :(

If I click on the FBP logo on the top right it takes me to the FBP

changed any settings for yonks. Of course it could be that we are seeing
dofferent underlying versions of FB because I tried the new look and

Ah, so did I but recently the horrid new version reappeared for me and I

there a 'switch to most recent' option on the newsfeed and although it is
set in my fbp preferences, it doesn't always work now.

It is definitely still running. It told me a couple of days ago that one of
my contacts is no longer on my contacts list. I don't get adverts but the
auto-switch to most recent is not working - fortunately I kept a bookmark
to that version of the newsfeed. I can get a friends feed of sorts by
manipulating the URL but it's not in 'most recent' order.

I tried the new version brieflyand switched back and it works but
every morning it is not there, so I open it in a new tab and close the

Companies on Facebook with different names keep trying to
sell me what looks like the same handheld circular saw. Very tempting,
but then I'd have to think of something to do with it.
I bought one of those for a specific task, several years ago. The shed
(proper tiled) roof had been leaking for a while and a lot of the floor
boards had rotted making it difficult to walk around while rescuing that
which was not beyond repair. The ability to set the depth of cut made it
the ideal tool as I could cut along the edge of timber (joist?) and remove
the rotten bits, creating a small step onto the intact wooden floor from
the concrete underneath.

Meanwhile I engaged a chap to fix the roof - sourcing matching pan-tiles
took a while. He was greatly impressed by the little chop-saw, especially
when he learned it cost just £25, and decided if good tools could be had
for that sort of price he would consider buying them and adding them
directly to the cost of a job, leaving them behind or giving them away
afterwards.

I've still got it, it still works and has come in handy now and then. I've
never got on well with hand saws and it's easier to make lengthy straight
cuts with it than with a jigsaw.

My last optician*hated* giving up
a prescription, so much so, that at my advanced age, he insisted that
my eyesight hadn't altered in 5 years. I shall be going to another opitician.
Incidentally, even with magnifier, I see no numbers on either pair of
frames.
AFAIK, I haven't got cataracts, so I don't think that's why he said I don't
need a new prescription. See above re small print. IME, some manufacturers
paint the numbers on, so they rub off after time. Try looking for an old
pair that fitted well?

Sorry, dental services are off-limits at the mo Luv.
I have been dentisted this week; and the optician will see me tomorrow.
Getting to see a doctor is another story however.
But will you be able to see the optician?
"(S)He's behind you!"
(At least, that's what happens when I have an eye test.)
They have round here for appointments. My last optician *hated* giving up
a prescription, so much so, that at my advanced age, he insisted that
my eyesight hadn't altered in 5 years. I shall be going to another opitician.
The new glasses now on order mean I got good value out of the last two
pairs as they date back four years.

With difficulty. Apparently my reading vision is worse because my long
distance vision has improved as the lens has hardened with age.

With all my other medical problems I am clearly old.

I wondered whther "coche" had another meaning, but neither my
dictionary nor the Spanish wickepedia gave one.
I would guess it is pronounced with a hard ch as in loch...
Is loch pronounced with a hard ch?
Ch in loch is a voiceless velar fricative when pronounced correctly.
Ch in Spanish coche is a voiceless dental plosive followed by a
voiceless dental fricative.
Fer Gawd's sake, it was a joch. And Sassenacks pronounce it as a hard ch
as in Lock Lomond and Lock Ness, whether that's right or wrong.

I have Google Translate bookmarked - https://bit.ly/3drH5YP - and it
gives "My car gave quite large discharges and with this tape I have
solved". Was the product some sort of tape for repairing exhaust, water
hose, or petrol tank?
Likewise, and it also suggested ‘film’ instead of ‘tape’
