On PI day, I watched:

SUPERNATURAL:
"Fallen Idol". Citizens of a small town are being killed by dead icons,
such as Abraham Lincoln, and by infamous objects, like James Dean's
car. Later, two teens claim a friend was kidnapped by Paris Hilton.

SUPERNATURAL:
"I Believe the Children Are Our Future". Sam and Dean investigate
reports of fairy tales and urban legends coming to life. Their probe
leads them to an 11-year-old boy who's able to make everything he
believes come true. Castiel thinks the lad is a threat and wants him
eliminated because the child is a half-demon.

SUPERNATURAL:
"The Curious Case of Dean Winchester". Bobby plays a high-stakes poker
game with a witch and bets 25 years of his life for a chance to be free
of his wheelchair, but he loses. As he begins to rapidly age, Dean
attempts to save him, but he also ages into an old man.

SUPERNATURAL:
"Changing Channels". Sam and Dean are thrown into an alternate universe
where they become characters in various TV shows, including a medical
series, a Japanese game show, a forensics procedural and a sitcom.
Castiel warns them that if they don't find a way out soon, they will
become trapped inside forever by the Trickster.

CHARLIE'S ANGELS:
"Nips and Tucks". The Angels learn that a mob boss is entering a health
spa for plastic surgery.

HAWKING AND EINSTEIN: UNLOCKING THE UNIVERSE

What did you watch?
soaps: GH - Cutie Willow and Chase get all "wet" and then get out of
their wet clothes, and yet Cutie Willow never took the opportunity to
jump Chase's bones, which I thought was odd; but in the end, when she's
putting her clothes back on, it's revealed that Willow has... one of
those "NXIVM"-type tattoos! Shocking twist, yo! Relatedly, Molly, who
hasn't interacted with Kristina in a while is shocked by Kristina's
involvement with Shiloh's whole deal, and to Kristina's face calls it
what it is - a cult! Meanwhile, Ava is still reeling from the
Ryan/Kevin revelation (and I wouldn't want to be Kevin, right now!!).

Game of Thrones (HBO Go) - Episodes #6.7 & 6.8.
OMG! He's alive! The Hound's alive!! (Actually, I had been spoiled
about this revelation some time ago, so this did not come as a surprise
to me, even if The Hound's circumstances did.)
OMG!! It's friggin' Ian McShane as the Guest Star!! Now, this, OTOH,
I was *not* expecting, so it was a total surprise to see McShane on
this show. Too bad his character only lasts an episode.
OMG!!! It's friggin' BELLA RAMSEY from "THE WORST WITCH" playing
Lyanna Mormont!! This I totally DID NOT SEE coming! (I guess that's how
Ramsey got "The Worst Witch" gig...)
Anyway, I found these episodes pretty enjoyable, esp. the Arya
parts. In Braavos, Arya is trying to escape, but The Waif is hot in
pursuit and manages to stab Arya; Arya manages to find refuge with the
actress she'd saved previously, but ultimately Arya needs to have a
final "showdown" with The Waif - I really liked the final scene where
Arya basically tells Jaqen H'ghar to piss off!
Jon, Sansa and Davos try to organize an army to take back
Winterfell. In a related storyline, Brienne tries to negotiate a way
out for Sansa's uncle, the "Blackfish", after Jamie Lannister seiges
Blackfish's castle. (Pod and Bronn are reunited in an amusing scene!) -
in the end, Jamie lets Brienne (and Pod) escape (back to Sansa,
presumably).
Theon and sister Yara have fled to Essos, in the hopes of offering
their services to Daenerys.
In Meereen, Varys departs on a mysterious mission (I suspect it's to
talk to the Greyjoys), and then Meereen is attacked by the slavers!
Tyrion and co. are trapped in the pyramid! But look who shows up at the
end!
In King's Landing, I did enjoy The Mountain and Cersei sticking it
to the Sparrows, even if that move ended up coming back to bite Cersei
in the ass - if Cersei didn't want her own son dead before, she should
want him dead now! Meanwhile, Margeary manages to get a message to
Olenna Tyrell and tells her to get out of Dodge!
The last two episodes of the season should cover the battle for
Winterfell, and Cersei's "trial", so I'm looking forward to getting to
them!

The Magicians (recorded) - "Home Improvement" (ep. #4.8). A decent
episode, though it didn't bowl me over - I did like Quentin and the
"Falcor!" bit...
Alice goes home to her mother (Judith Hoag) in order to cast a spell
to help Zelda find daughter Harriet in the "Mirror Realm". Margo
insists upon helping Fenn on her "quest" to find the dream...
spirit(?), and Fenn's destiny revelation is surprising. Julia and Kady
have to fix the situation when Julia's and Quentin's latest "quest"
goes horribly wrong, dragging in Penny 23 and Felicia Day into the
mess, as well!

This was pretty much the extent of what I watched yesterday - I did
catch some of the first "Fam" episode last night.

Recorded for later: The second "Fam" episode, and "Legacies"(!!).

of "kill"?" - M-OC, "A Perilous Rescue" (ep. #2.9), LSW:TFA (08-10-2017)

I watched:

Star Trek: Discovery - "Project Daedalus" Team Disco travels to Section
31's heavily armed base to have a few words with them. Meanwhile Spock
and Michael bond over a game of chess. Plus we learned a lot more about
Airiam, while simultaneously keeping us in the dark about her character.
Pretty good episode.

Deadly Class - I forgot to mention when I watched last week's episode
"The Clampdown" which dealt with the school trying to track down which
student was responsible for the deaths of students earlier in the season.

This week's episode, "Kids of the Black Hole" was the penultimate
episode and continues that thread with everyone pretty much picking a
side between the school headmaster (Benedict Wong) and his evil sister.
Given Wong runs a school for assassins, calling his sister is *evil* is
saying something. Although I guess technically, the lead kids we follow
week to week aren't really aware of the situation between Wong and his
sister, although they are responsible for setting everything in motion.

Captive State (theatrical) Sci-fi movie about an insurgent group trying
to fight against an alien occupation of the U.S./world. The movie
starts off with a copy trying to get his family out of Chicago just as
Congress signs an armistice with the aliens. We learn during the
opening credits that after the signing of the armistice the aliens have
sealed off sections of every city on Earth and forced humans to build
them underground habitats. Also during this time the rich have gotten
richer, while the poor have gotten poorer. The movie picks up 9 years
later where one of the cop's kids is now a young man living under alien
occupation. He's doing some menial labor job for the aliens. His
brother was a resistance leader and thought killed during an insurgency
attack years ago. But his brother shows up very much alive warning him
an attack is imminent and to get out of the city (which is *not* easy).

Meanwhile John Goodman stars as a cop working for the aliens (the aliens
run the police forces) who is tracking the insurgency trying to stop
them. This movie felt a lot like the Josh Holloway TV series, "Colony"
with a touch of "They Live" thrown in. We mostly follow an insurgency
group as they try to take on the aliens with little to no resources
while the overall society has been co-opted by the alien invading force.
I really would have liked to see more about human society under the
occupation. Given the entire movie is set on Earth, we saw very little
of what day to day life was like for the average person, other than
everyone was clearly living in a police state. Overall, it's a good
movie and worth checking out. Again, it's basically the movie version
of "Colony."

I enjoyed "The Worst Witch". Season #1 felt like it was better than
season #2, overall. (And I was miffed that they inexplicably recast a
main role between seasons.) But I think I liked both.

I believe there will be a season #3 of TWW.

Yeah, this show is starting to fire on all cylinders now. I'm really
enjoying it. Glad I stuck with it after Season 1.

Having said that, they sure seemed to give up on Seven of Airiam a
little too easily. I could think of a half-dozen Trek saves from the
canon that would have worked to save her, the simplest being to lock
onto her with the transporter and beam her aboard as soon as she blasted
out the airlock, then hold her in stasis in the transporter buffer until
they could figure out some way to rematerialize her in the brig or
somewhere else completely firewalled that Section 31's AI couldn't do
any damage while they worked on flushing it out of her system.

I'm also starting to tire of Spock the Asshole. He needs to chill out a
little.

Nope.

And regarding Section 31's holographic footage of Spock breaking out of
the psych ward, they seemed more shocked that Section 31 would frame
Spock than they were that Section 31 apparently murdered three people
themselves to set Spock up.

Okay, so I didn't miss an explanation there? It seemed ridiculous that
they'd do nothing in that scenario, and it was the only reason I dinged
the episode a little bit.

What did you watch?
On Thursday March 14, I watched:

THE FLASH: Failure is an Orphan
There was at least 1 post re this,
mentioning Sarah Carter at the ending.
I used to like her, but not having seen her for a while,
I did not recognize her.
Grade B-, upgraded for the ending.

NEW AMSTERDAM: Three Dots
Is his cancer going to be cured or not.
Seeing that there is also a 2nd season on the way,
he seems to me to be remarkably healthy for such a fatal ailment.

ROSEHAVEN: 3x8
I think I smiled once or twice.
Grade C+

MURDOCH MYSTERIES: Sins of the Father
anim did a review of this some time back:
In part: "Dreadful, plodding lack of action
as Murdoch sleepwalks through investigating his father's death"

I liked it more than anim, tho his criticisms are valid.
My wife (& her niece) had breast reduction surgery,
as the bra straps were cutting into her chest.

So I wasn't keen on Dr. Ogden's opinion nor the outcome.
There should not have been any sepsis.
Grade C-.

I liked this better than you did. This episode made me realize, again,
how much I'd missed Jesse L. Martin as Joe. He's the heart of that
show. The scene where he and Barry give each other life advice was
probably the best thing I've seen in the series all year.

As for me:

THE DEATH OF STALIN. Theatrical film. I'd recorded this because, for
some reason, I thought it was a straight documentary, and I'm
interested in the era. It turned out to be perhaps the darkest comedy
I've ever seen, and a really lucky find. It boasts a mostly British
cast, including Jason Isaacs, but includes a couple of Americans as
well. Everybody is excellent, but the real surprise here was Steve
Buscemi as ... Nikita Khrushchev? Oh, yes. He and Isaacs (as Marshal
Zhukov) are the best things in a film full of very good things. I
think it's presently on Showtime On Demand, and there's a very nice
copy lurking in the usual place.

So I wasn't keen on Dr. Ogden's opinion nor the outcome.
There should not have been any sepsis.
But this was over 100 years ago, and the doctors used their bare hands
to operate. I'm surprised there weren't more infections.
Yeah, elective surgery in 1908 should be a non starter.

In part: "Dreadful, plodding lack of action
as Murdoch sleepwalks through investigating his father's death"
I liked it more than anim, tho his criticisms are valid.

Yes, the show began abou 1896, and has progressed about 10 years in
time. Can't you tell by the costuming?

SUPERNATURAL / 14x15 / Peace of Mind

[Sam and Castiel follow a case to a picturesque little town in Arkansas,
only to find out nothing is as idyllic as it appears to be. Dean and
Jack take a road trip to visit an old friend.]

"What was that?"
"Maybe they're Mormon?"

"Hey! How was Arkansas?"
"Arkansas was, uh...it was...weird."
"Heard you wore a cardigan."
"Yeah, I told him about the cardigan."
"Great. Thanks."

Best cold open to a show ever. Okay, maybe not ever, but I'd have to go
back a long time to find a better one. Quirky, funny, gross. Intriguing.
So good that by the time the title card appeared, I was taking a break
to look up the writing and directing talent on this one, and it was the
writer's first gig *anywhere*, apparently, and she nailed it. (I'm
assuming that she wrote the Charming Acres part and that the veteran
writer wrote the ongoing stuff with Jack.) The reveal on the Charming
Acres bit was obvious, but it was a terrific A-plot. Lots of weirdness
and fun, and the director got a lot out of Padalecki (Sam), who's
usually the weak acting link but who turned in a solid performance this
week. Ackles (Dean) was the comic relief for the B-plot and handled it
well, but that's nothing new. It was also good to see Donatello again,
and they did a good job of setting the table for what will surely be the
main topic of the rest of the season where Jack is concerned.

Grade: A-

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY / 2x09 / Project Daedalus

[When the Discovery crew infiltrates Section 31's headquarters,
suspicions arise that the crew may have a traitor in their midst.
Burnham tries to help Spock but her efforts don't go as planned.]

"All right, Michael. Let's play chess."

In a solid Riker-directed outing, Discovery heads for Section 31 HQ and
finds only dead bodies. It's Skynet all over again, and a hacked Airiam
pays the ultimate price in a noble assisted suicide. Along the way,
holograms turn out to be the explanation for the video footage of Spock
"murdering" people, so he's off the hook. In the end, if I wasn't
already there, this episode convinced me that I want to learn more about
the rest of the bridge crew, and not just because it means that it would
cut back on screen time for Burnham and Tilly...but there's also that.

Random thoughts:

* Cornwell needs to cut down on the botox.
* Pike continues his meteoric rise to the top of the list of Most
Awesome Starfleet Captains Ever.
* Did I miss the explanation for why they couldn't beam Airiam back to
Discovery so that they could quickly subdue her there? If I didn't miss
anything, then *something* must have inadvertently ended up on the
cutting room floor because that's just a gaping plot hole right there.

Yes, but now we know that Starfleet Skynet almost certainly murdered
them so that there wouldn't be any inconvenient living people to
undermine Spock's murder charge.

As long as the info comes the way it did this time with Seven of Airiam.
I dread seeing another "Lower Decks" type episode.

I liked the scene where he was getting all puffed up with righteous
indignation and the admiral gave him that "why you sat out the war"
speech, and he was like, "Oh, well... never mind."

So now that she's a fugitive, too, does that mean she's going to stay on
the ship and the Discovery is going to have *three* commanders now? Saru

level in the chain."

Heh. That actually cost him a bit in my book since he allowed himself to
be sidetracked by some obvious flattery. OTOH, I liked how it clearly
impressed the rest of the bridge crew and likely raised Pike in their
estimation, so there's that.

Are they actually fugitives, though, or were those threats just a

Sure, but they would only be used if the perpetrator of the set-up cared
about people and had a moral conscience. I don't see Starnet being so
burdened. A cold, ruthless AI will just see killing them as the most
efficient option.

I would imagine that Starnet would fake a warrant on the ship and crew, the
same way it faked Admiral Petard and Spock's rampage.

wouldn't have thought was anything special since we've seen it used in
the past.

Oh, I wouldn't put that past them, but that's not the same as actually
being in legitimate trouble with legitimate Starfleet.

It was Starnet. Section 31 had no reason to frame Spock. Starnet had a
reason since the Red Angel was giving him the heads up on what Starnet
was planning. Also keep in mind that Section 31 would have probably
done pretty much whatever Starnet recommended, so the two were probably
acting pretty much in sync until they caught on themselves and Starnet
took them out too.

I couldn't discount the possibility that 31 might have had its own
reason for wanting Spock to visit Talos IV.

Yeah, I could see how 31 and Skynet could become bedfellows if they
could avoid killing each other off.
