Discussion:
topical inserts or re-writes?

I think a number of actors will not go in in person now to do
recordings. Jill,Peggy, Oliver, Jenny, Brian, Lynda, Tony, Pat,
Christine, Carol, Bert are all in the age category that would be in
danger to go into the studios. Will recordings be able to continue
anyway? They've got ..what..6 weeks ahead done? They can do some
over the phone. While I know people are tired of hearing about corona
virus, it is going to impinge on TA. Unless broadcasting is added to
food production and food shops and surgeries and pharmacies as
essential places that can continue to work.

And I know they have planned months and years ahead but they will
have to include references to the Corona virus, won't they. And if, as
it seems likely, things are about to be very disrupted nationally,
they will have to start amending things already recorded, won't they?
Re-writing would be a big deal and don't writers have to get together
to plan?

In response to a similar thread, Keri Davies said:

Believe me, this has been exercising #TheArchers production team
mightily- both the appropriate content of episodes and the
practicalities of making the programme.

Might be problematical as quality is so variable and I think the processing
used to reduce the bandwidth would have adverse effects on the overall
quality as further processing will only create more artifacts as the sound
or signal is processed for transmission in the myriad of formats. ISDN
lines have been used for remote sources but this requires permanent wiring
and extra hardware - would Aunty even consider sanctioning this? I would
say unlikely.

Having said that, it is possible to record voices independently but, this
takes longer and to be convincing requires additional skills of the
‘talent’ and the engineers to work well. I have had occasion to do this
when different voices could not appear in the studio in the same session;
using ‘cuing’, careful editing and mixing with effects, it can work well -
but it does take time!

Children are often recorded in isolation then edited and mixed in, yes. I
assume that is what you were implying rather than contributions via Skype.

.
Here’s an idea. I’m prepared to script it for them if they can’t manage.

Lilian is talking to Robert in the hospital corridor and it is just time to
move to the next scene when two staff go past, a doctor and nurse. We
overhear their conversation, but Lilian and Robert don’t. They say that a
resident of Borchester has just been admitted with COVID 19 and discuss
what facilities the hospital has, and the prognosis for the patient-good.
Than we go to the next, extant scene. Because no-one else has heard it,
there is no need for anyone from Ambridge to talk about it or panic.

Re-writing would be a big deal and don't writers have to get together
to plan?
Can they skype in their lines?
Might be problematical as quality is so variable and I think the processing
used to reduce the bandwidth would have adverse effects on the overall
quality as further processing will only create more artifacts as the sound
or signal is processed for transmission in the myriad of formats. ISDN
lines have been used for remote sources but this requires permanent wiring
and extra hardware - would Aunty even consider sanctioning this? I would
say unlikely.
Having said that, it is possible to record voices independently but, this
takes longer and to be convincing requires additional skills of the
‘talent’ and the engineers to work well. I have had occasion to do this
when different voices could not appear in the studio in the same session;
using ‘cuing’, careful editing and mixing with effects, it can work well -
but it does take time!
They do it with children, don't they?
Now then... Now then... How about that then, Guys and Gals?
Nick

Maybe travel to one of the radio stations and entry to a recording room
without going through the bowels of the buildings could be possible; my
experience is that the rooms suitable for this type of work are not
accessible without walking through many corridors that share access to many
other rooms though.

How about feeding the scripts into a PC and taking the output from the
soundcard; of course most of the voices would inherit an American twang and
some pretty dodgy pronunciation. Works well in ISIHAC of course...
UMRAT’s suggestions for voicing various characters please, I believe this
idea has legs;-)

In olden days of yore I went on a tour of Pebble Mill where one of the
more interesting things was the Archers sound effects machine. It might
have been a Moog, not sure, anyway the SFX were on lots of retractable
tapes a bit like sewing tapes, and pressing a key caused a mechanism to
pull a tape over a tape head "Mooooo!" then it would retract into its
cartridge.

An updated version would include the many stock phrases. I'm guessing
you could get away with several episodes before someone twigged.

I was setting up (we were the support band) at the Marquee and two of the
roadies dropped Dave Greenslade's Mellotron with the hilarious consquence
that all of the tapes fell out. It took a very long time to put them back
into the right slots.

All it's been any good for since Hislop got BDS.
I guess then that you´ve been boycotting, disinvesting and sanctioning
since then.

On the subject of topical inserts, wasn't Ruth's dad a toilet paper
magnate? A quick reminiscence of the great shortage of 19xx and how she
didn't see him for three weeks perhaps?
An important and timely point.
Would that he were here in our hour of greatest need - and all that.
This is a time when dead tree newspapers are far more useful than
on-line sources.
But the most intellectually stimulating ones aren't usually the most
absorbent.
