oldies towing caravans, some gave away using them because of truckie bad
language from a very small minority.

My suggestion to those people was to ignore that small group and concentrate
on the beneficial majority. I well remember one telling me of a wet road
and a crash that had just happened just over the top of a hill covering most
of the road which would almost certainly have involved my customer as well
were it not for a warning put out on Ch 8 by a stopping truck at the scene.

Forums that are moderated may be balanced or - as one particular case -
moderated to censor alternative opinions (serves them right for their lack
of cricket prowess). A NG has the benefit of being self-moderated by the
participants deciding what threads to ignore or block.

I draw lots of information from aus.aviation, and enjoyment, and even the
odd OT. A small minority is not going to make me relinquish that. Think
about it.

I second the motion. My "delete" key has been getting a fair bit of
use lately (you'll note my absence on any threads related to 9/11
conspiracy or the Australian Drought). But I still see enough
relevant material to make the daily check worthwhile- most days,
anyway....

I agree with Brian, Sure there is a lot of crap on this and any other
newsgroup, but then how much of a newspaper do you read?
I buy the Saturday Age religously every week to read probably 0.5% of it. I
have been involved with a few moderated groups, such as space.science etc
but the problem with these is that the moderators can often take days or
weeks to clear a post and you lose that spontaneous feedback that we all
want.. it makes it very hard to have any sort of debate/discussion. What
would really make this group rock is if we had people posting more about
their flights, including me. What might be a boring ( if that is possible
with flying) trip might be of a lot of interest to others. There has been a
lot of good stuff on this group and some great contributers, including
Bernie, Coop ( and Dorothy) , the Goer, Stealth and even RT whose block I
wanted to knock off earlier on, and many others whose names escape me. Just
treat the dickheads like the adds in the newspaper.

Yes, as newcomer to this group (and to Aviation in Australia) it's
highly irritating - my killfile is the largest for this group.

I have to ask: are there alternatives? (not counting PPRUNE ;)

What other groups or forums (fora?) do the respectable regulars here
hang out (you know who you are ;) ?

Well I don't have any problem with the spam. I have added to my block list
all the spammers and anyone that replies to them.
Admittedly I only see about 5% of the messages but I suppose that's only the
relevant ones

academe were always fairly clean, but others started badly and have
continued so. rec.travel.air is a good example. I remember being flamed
there in the 90s. Perhaps they should never have assigned dot.com?

As an aside, my first Internet email address (not my first email

Got a mail and news feed through a mate who also had a .UUCP and so on,
about 4 hosts up until we got to friend of a friend who had access to an
university Internet link and acted as smarthost through some postgrad
project.

Led to something like myhost ! hishost ! theirhost % unihost . uni . dom
@ bigfeed . edu

But it worked! Actually found old posts of mine (though not my very
first ones) in Deja/Google one day.

Actually my early memories in remote locations are the same only
different. Basically we relied on the local BBS through 1200/300 apple
modems in a pure text environment. The BBS's were generally run by
local high school nerds, and content standards were unsurprisingly
meager. There was usually an intermittent type of Internet feed
though, and that made the effort (and cost) justifiable if one's
accounting system was sufficiently creative. Fidonet and Gopher ruled
OK, and one could dispose of big chunks of one's life on modem
dropouts, box crashes etc whilst dreaming fondly of home.
Ah, those were the days...

an ink thing that was hand held and hand guided. it was as slow as

glass pouring device (in the cork stopper of the jar) that was regulated with his thumb. Also
those standard issue pens with nibs that tore holes in the paper on every upstroke - jeez, we
used to make a mess on the paper - needing a blotter just about every word. Going back to 2nd
class - we had slates.... :)

That was when Belmore North Primary had less that 300 students using only 60% of its single
building - The Junior Technical College (secondary school) used the rest.

I still have a dictionary with some very ink-stained pages. Came about
as a result of a feud with my desk-mate (remember those desks?) in
grade 6. The story was you had to sit and take it- whatever the other
person did. He poked me with a compass needle, I snapped his pencil,
he emptied my pencil case onto the floor.... that's when I poured ink
from the inkwell into the centre pages of his dictionary and then
slammed the book shut in his face. The look of surprise on his
ink-splattered face was shortly thereafter mirrored by my look of
horror as I realised we had been sprung.....
I left the school shortly after that (he told me I could keep the
dictionary) and I ran into him about 30 years later- flying the jump
plane at Murray Bridge. Seems like our common interests continued on
into later life....

Sadly, I must confess that the quality of my handwriting is such that I have
to use a fountain pen as the norm to slow down my writing and make it
legible.
Not sure where this puts me in the Rorshach test category - a blot on my
escutcheon perhaps?
I did learn years ago not to take a fountain pen on RPT flights particularly
after the pilots strike replacements arrived and descents seemed to be
vertical - after two shirt pockets I returned to a biro at such times.
And yes, I remember the inkwells - OT I know but stand up all those who
removed the well and contrived an intricate network of rulers, books, etc to
drop a marble in the top and clunk, clonk, thru ones desk (admission of age
therein).

NO!!! Sweet, lovable *you* got flamed? Say it isn't so!!! I can't
think of any other guy who tries as hard to be kind and gentle and
friendly to everyone as you. It's a travesty. A huge miscarriage of
justice.

Still, I'll never be able to understand why you and ellen (spamfree at
last, may the lord rest her feisty soul) never got married. You were
meant for each other. She should have dumped that cold dead fish
husband of hers who goes to bed at 7pm every night and won't eat or
drink anything on airplanes and eloped down under with you. Then you
all could have had fantastic holidays swimming with the stingrays in
the barrier reef and cycling in the outback with JF (when his phimosis
allows him to travel). I just know maryanne kehoe would have arranged
a fabulous wedding for you two. And if you asked her nicely she would

Oh Lord, whatever happened to those two neurotic Dutch ladies, Sjoerd
and AJC? They couldn't take the heat apparently so they were wise to
get out of the kitchen. AJC had a total nervous breakdown on hir last
entry into the United States when sie was roughed up a little in
Customs at LAX after disembarking from an Air New Zealand flight. Sie
spent an entire year in alt.uk.travel.air telling the sordid tale to
anyone who would listen, throwing temper tantrums and swearing up and
down that sie would never set hir dainty feet on U.S. soil again as
long as sie lived, until they finally got fed up with hir and ran hir
out of the place. Last I heard hir family had to stage an

Its time the moderator of this news groups, assuming there is one, pulls
non-aviation related topics off the news group!

There is no moderator and I think that it would be a very ordinary idea
to have one. Unmoderated Usenet is the only real freedom left with
regard to Internet based discussions. That thread on Basair a few
threads down wouldn't have lasted in a moderated environment even
though it's relevant information that needs to be widely propagated.
Usenet is open to abuse but I think, generally, most people that post
here are a well-behaved bunch.

The corollary can be used to actively halt a track.

Such as I once saw someone do... in a thread about a certain series of
events in WW2. Sort of like stopping to watch BBC's "The World At War"

notorious net-nazi and holocaust denier of the time and frequent the

Usenet is free and this group (like most of usenet) is unmoderated.
This means that you and I can express our views without fear of
censorship. Unfortunately this freedom also applies to bored school
kids, conspiracy nutters and anyone else who feels a need to express
an off topic opinion.
Frankly, I will not be part of a moderated group. I prefer to ignore
the nutters and to killfile the worst. This is a small price for the
gems of information that commonly cone out of groups like this one.
Usenet is not everyone's cup of tea, but a good self moderated
Usenet group is IMO well worth the effort that it takes to sort
through the dreck to get to the good bits.

I'm not sure what you're complaining about. I have a filter set up to
auto-delete messages with "911", "Iraq" and "Terrorist" in the subject
line, plus I have one that deletes posts from Turcaud, and I'm lucky if
I see two posts for the loonies per day.

Filtering by subject gets rid of those who are too impulsive to restrain
themselves from repling to the psychotics, too.
