Prescott links global warming to Katrina

Juliette Jowit and Ned Temko

The Observer

John Prescott sparked controversy yesterday by linking America's
refusal to tackle climate change to the devastation of the New Orleans
hurricane.

The Deputy Prime Minister caused potential embarrassment for Britain
by drawing a parallel between the US city destroyed by Hurricane
Katrina and island states that scientists believe are under threat of
being swamped.

In a speech in Berlin, he also criticised the US for failing to sign
the Kyoto protocol on climate change, which is aimed at slowing global
warming by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

Article continues
A debate has raged in the US over whether global warming is
responsible for the recent series of storms. So far this year there
have been 15 named storms, significantly more than average.

President George Bush says he does not believe that human activity
causes global warming, but some experts say excessive carbon emissions
lead to higher sea temperatures and stronger storms.

With the death toll from Katrina expected to be in the thousands,
however, comments like these from a senior politician will be seen by
some as insensitive.

A spokesman for Prescott said Downing Street had seen the speech
beforehand, but the Prime Minister's office later refused to comment.

Tony Blair will meet Bush in New York this week at the United Nations
world summit, at which global warming will be a key issue. A White
House spokesman said the two leaders' warm relationship would not be
affected by the comments.

The spokesman also dismissed the suggestion of a link between Kyoto
and Katrina. James Connaughton, the chief White House environmental
aide, said Prescott was careful in his choice of words.

'Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster,' said Connaughton. 'Even
had we ratified and implemented the provisions of Kyoto, this would
not have stopped Katrina. We've had hurricanes for centuries.

'I have a high regard for John Prescott and it has been reinforced by
the fact that he was careful in what he said on this issue.'

In his speech, Prescott stressed his compassion for the US hurricane
victims, but said Bush's administration was wrong not to join Britain
and many other leading industrial nations in supporting Kyoto.

He told the international congress of the Council for European
Urbanism: 'As a European negotiator at the Kyoto climate change
convention, I was fully aware that climate change is changing weather
patterns and raising sea levels.

'The horrific flood of New Orleans brings home to us the concern of
leaders of countries like the Maldives, whose nations are at risk of
disappearing completely. There has been resistance by the US
government to Kyoto - which I believe is wrong.'

And give the neocons spin-doctors more time to bury and suppress the truth
and deflect the blame? Yeah, you would like that. Unfortunately the truth is
much too dire to allow that to happen. Now fuck off with your imaginary
compassion, Fuxsnot.

All Fauxy knows is the talking points he's given.

He could have easily have said, "Prescott can't point to just one
storm and say that's global warming" but Free Republic or World Nut
Daily aren't running that one this week. Instead, they are running
the "By questioning us, you're disrespecting the dead!" squeal, and
poor old Fauxy has to go with the talking point he has, and not the
one he wishes he had.

Sad to relate, he died a month ago. He was nearly 17, and died
peacefully in his sleep. There are worse ways to go. I'm happy to
report that during his life he got many scritches behind the ears. He
was an immensely popular critter. That left us with one very elderly
Samoyed who started showing signs of seperation anxiety, so we went to
the pound and got a rickety, blind old Chocolate Lab to keep her
company for those times when we're all gone from the house. It's
working out pretty well, except that when the Lab barks to be let out,
it is wise to respond IMMEDIATELY. But the lab has the same sense of
calm and devotion that Riley had. Which is what the Sam needs.

was an immensely popular critter.
Sorry to hear about Riley.17 is an amazing age for a dog though.
I had a Lab-Sheppard mix who made it to 17.
We're down to one dog now, A beautiful Black lab who is a little over
14. She's starting to act like the Old Timer she is these days,
although when she gets a chance to swim she acts like a 3 year old.
When these guys go, we'll get a pair of puppies (two dogs are much
easier to raise than one) and I want one of the pups to be a lab. I
like the breed. My wife wants another Sam, although I'm hoping we can
get a Sam mix. Mixed breeds just do better.
Lots of lakes and streams around here, it's Lab heaven.
What's this? Civil discourse between near opposites on the ideological
scale? I'm feeling a little disoriented here! Have I stumbled into

Prescott links global warming to Katrina
John Prescott sparked controversy yesterday by linking America's
refusal to tackle climate change to the devastation of the New Orleans
hurricane.
The Deputy Prime Minister caused potential embarrassment for Britain
by drawing a parallel between the US city destroyed by Hurricane
Katrina and island states that scientists believe are under threat of
being swamped.
In a speech in Berlin, he also criticised the US for failing to sign
the Kyoto protocol on climate change, which is aimed at slowing global
warming by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.
Do you Bush haters think you could possibly show a wee bit
of decency, and wait until all of the dead have been recovered
and buried before you exploit their deaths to attack Bush?
Like rightwingers waited before attacking
the mayor and the governor? Dream on.
All Fauxy knows is the talking points he's given.
Irony. My favorite part of any usenet discussion.
No Offense to you in particular Zepp.
Oh, and a big scratch behind the ears

Sad to relate, he died a month ago. He was nearly 17, and died
peacefully in his sleep. There are worse ways to go. I'm happy to

Sounds nice for people too.
About 20 years ago we were part of a foster home program for pups, for
a school that trains guides gogs for the blind. You basically get the
pup, socialize it for a year than hand it back to them. Kind of tough,
but rewarding none the less.
Both of ours were Labs, so I've been kind of partial to them ever
since.
I'd take another mixed one though.
That extended gene pool sometimes gives them an edge physiologically.

I respect you and your wife for being involved in the companion guide

concluded that we couldn't provide the structured environment
required. But I suspect we also didn't want to deal with the
heartbreak of having to give the pup up after a year.

Oh, and a big scratch behind the ears
to the *other* Riley.
Sounds nice for people too.
It is. Starting to get developed now. Yuppies have discovered that
remote as we are, one can tele-commute from here.

Still, in a county of 4,000 square miles we have 45,000 people, mostly
in towns. So there's room for a few more.

GMAFB. Given the amount of blame you've been trying to toss around to
protect your pathetic coward in the White House, you have no moral
standing to suddenly start bleating about "exploiting the dead"

Don't sweat it, the left are digging themselves even FURTHER into the
hole Bush put them in with nonsense such as this asshole from Britain.

When time and again you play Russian roulette with hurricanes, at some
point the chamber may roar.

"How vain and foolish, then, thought I, for timid untravelled man to try
to comprehend aright this wondrous whale, by merely pouring over his
dead attenuated skeleton, stretched in this peaceful wood. No. Only in
the heart of quickest perils; only when within the eddyings of his angry
flukes; only on the profound unbounded sea, can the fully invested whale
be truly and livingly found out." -+Herman Melville, "Moby Dick"

In Russian Roulette, you have one bullet.

Add global warming, and you have TWO bullets.

Actually, this is a crock of shit. There is no software capable
of predicting the effect of global warming on the number of
hurricanes. Whenever anybody claims to know things such as
this (or that the jet stream will shift to path X, and make the
UK colder), they are _really_ talking out of their ass.
