Hi Keith,
I’m satisfied with the iPhone XR. My other phone is the 7+. So technically, this one is actually a little bit smaller. But the big difference is that the bezels on this are much narrower. And of course there are the new jesters and Face ID. I still find home button and touch ID faster. But face ID certainly works at least most of the time for me. And I really like the battery life.

I enjoy my Iphone XR, not having a home button takes a little getting
used to but once you master the new gestures, it's just as easy. There
are a couple of other differences, for example the dictate option is in
a different place on the screen, over all though it's a nice phone. It
does seem that Apple is done with the home button so everyone will need
to get used to the new way of doing things moving forward.

It is not only Apple that is done with the home button, many Android phones also don't have one any more and quite a few models are starting to also have no 3.5mm headphone jack any more.

I was really tempted to just grab the 8 Plus instead of the XR, but the difference was only something like $50. The XR is fine and all and while I still prefer the touch ID way more than the face ID, I opted to just bite the bullet and go for the XR for future compatibility. Had there been a steeper drop in price for the 8 Plus then sure, I would have maybe pulled the trigger, but for $50? Apple's basically asking you to get the newer model.
If Apple comes out with an iPhone that somehow incorporates touch ID along with a face ID option then I'd probably jump all over that and give my wife this XR, but for right now, the XR is ok.
