The other stuff is yellow squash with sauteed leeks, Anaheim pepper,
and pimento cheese broiled for a few minutes. It was a win!

And I ate EVERYTHING!

Looks like some Costco fried cod & fried got in there, too. That
was two days ago. I'll buy that fried cod again. Its a bitch to
make at home - this you just roast at 500F for 12 minutes and it's
almost as good as H. Salt Esquire,.

That's awfully nicely marbled for Select.

Exactly. And I'm not a strip kinda guy (or even fillet), but this
was pretty fucking good for $12. Eeek - it was 1.5lbs? I guess i
was hungry <shrug>.

And Stainless Steel for the win! Cast iron for searing steaks is a
kitchen myth compared to SS. I bet SS works better for grill grates
too. If only it wasn't so hard to keep clean.

All the other Select steaks there looked to be "bottom Select".
There are actually 5 sub-grades of USDA Select (and 2 for choice,
and 3 for Prime). What we know as only 3 retail grades of beef are
actually 10 within those same 3 grades. Grocery stores buy beef
wholesale according to the 10 grades, but have colluded sell to them
as a mere 3 grades retail (with help from the USDA).

Tops market just throws all their old shit out their window.
Animals from miles around come and chow down.

When you enter their parking lot, it smells like you've fallen into
a brooklyn sewer, but it's normal there.

Different supermarkets/chains have their own color coded labels.
Just because your market uses yellow for sell-by date doesn't mean
every market in this country does. I'd bet a Porterhouse steak I could
walk into any market in New Yawk and buy marked down meat. They're
certainly not going to through it away.

I know you meant to type "throw" it away. ;) Yes, every supermarket is
different. Then again, I never see those labels on the meat at Publix.
Maybe I'm just not shopping on the right days but I have never seen
the euphemistic "used meat" markdown bins there, either.
Looked like a perfectly good porthouse steak to me! I would have had to
cut it in half at the bone. There is no way I could eat an entire
porterhouse myself.

It depends on the store and the meat counter manager when meats
are marked down. Some do it very early in the morning while the
Kroger I shop at does it around noon. There's another Kroger 5 miles
up the road that does their mark downs after 3:00 p.m.

There's no Kroger here and OH! The Harris-Teeter grocery store which
had signs up saying they were coming soon! pulled out of the deal. So
we won't be getting a new grocery store.

cooked the rib portion. But hey, I don't have a large appetite.

Not really. It looked like it was cut from the wrong end of the short loin.
Too much going on in the "strip steak" portion. Too many different muscles.
That's probably why it didn't sell at full price.

Now you're being ridiculous, too. There are only two muscles there,
the longissimus and the psoas major. The only other "wrong end" of
the short loin gives us T-Bones rather than porterhouse steals.

You're falling all over yourself again.

The "used meat" is a RFC joke. It's not used but it's almost out of
date. You have to shop early in the day to find those as they are
grabbed early.

If you do buy one, be sure to cook it the same day. Don't even wait
until the next day.

Meh. I bought some chicken and used it three days past the "sell by" date.
It was fine.
Sometimes it's fine three days past, sometimes not. I buy it often. One
thing I'm *not* going to do is buy meat to put into the regular freezer
unless I already have a plan for it within the next week or so. I had to
throw away meat when I cleaned out my freezer, offending both my
ethical and frugal sensibilities.

Lamb chops are expensive. Every Tuesday though, I'd check the used meat
section and often got them half price. Used them in a day or two,
always good. Eventually they noticed they were not selling and stopped
putting out lamb chops very often.

Lamb chops are expensive. Every Tuesday though, I'd check the used meat
section and often got them half price. Used them in a day or two,
always good. Eventually they noticed they were not selling and stopped
putting out lamb chops very often.
I just got back from ALDI. They had their lamb chops with 30% off
stickers. That made the $9.99/#, $6.99/#. I got the smallest one,
which ended up being $5.31. It had a sell or freeze by date of
tomorrow, and that's when I'll make them.

The markets here put those yellow sale labels on when it's the sell-by
date... nothing wrong with it but they are not permited to sell meat
past its sell-by date.
Different supermarkets/chains have their own color coded labels.
Just because your market uses yellow for sell-by date doesn't mean
every market in this country does.
I did say the markets HERE... and the sell-by date is on the label
also. They use color to attract the eye,and they put the color coded
on sale meat packages in front of those at full price that haven't
reached their sell-by date, I suppose because some would rather pay
the higher price for slightly fresher meat. I asked the butcher about
it and was told to cook that meat that day or freeze it. There are
usually only 2-3 packages color coded each morning and are quickly
gone. I only see them when I get to the store early, at about 7 AM. I
leave the house searly on the days my wife teaches school as she
leaves at 7 AM. On the days she teaches and I plan to shop early I
tell her to leave the automatic garage door open when she leaves. The
different stores here seem to use the same yellow for "used meat", I
suppose in other areas the color code is different, but It's been
years since I've shopped elsewhere. I haven't been more than 50 miles
from my front door since moving here. The market I usually shop at is
in town, 5 miles away. The only times I go further is when I have a
doctor appointment at one of the large hospitals in Albany, 40-50
miles depending which one, but that's a rareity. I don't drive far
anymore, my doctor, dentist, and eye doctor are in town, 5 miles...
everything I need is in town or a phone call away...
these days one can buy everything on line. We have a full hardware
store and lumber yard in town as good as Home Depot or Lowe's... they
have three locations in nearby towns, one specializes in rentals like
large backhoes and bulldozers, another specializes in firearms and
ammo, the one in this town specializes in paint and lumber, all three
sell hardware/tools, etc. For most hardware and tools I'd rather shop
at Amazon, usually costs less and shipping right to my door is free.
Amazon sells major brands of paint too.

walk into any market in New Yawk and buy marked down meat.  They're
certainly not going to through it away.
I know you meant to type "throw" it away. ;)  Yes, every supermarket is
different.  Then again, I never see those labels on the meat at Publix.
Maybe I'm just not shopping on the right days but I have never seen
the euphemistic "used meat" markdown bins there, either.

Again, I don't see those bins at the stores here. It might be the time
of day but could also be because we don't have the same stores. When I
still lived in West TN I did see those marked down meat bins. It was
usually not anything wanted to buy. Tough as nails sirloin tip steaks
for $2.00? No thanks.

I don't think that I've seen a mark down bin for meat at my store
either. Occasionally some have a $3 (or whatever) off sticker, sitting
on top of the pile, which means they are up for "sell by" very soon.

$2 steak strips sound fine for braising or making stock/soup out of.

But you haven't lived in Brooklyn since Teddy Roosevelt was president.

"Vehical" is acceptable but "through" isn't? One is misspelled and
unacceptable and the other was an incorrect word and not acceptable.
Not excusable but at least my mistake was spelled correctly.

I'd eat that fried cod in an instant! Very good price on the
porterhouse. :)
On the images button, those pics of slow smoked porterhouse are wonderful!
