Discussion:
Can't play ANY facebook videos with firefox

Slack 14.2, 64-bit

I think this inability started with Quantum Firefox, but maybe earlier.
Possibly when switching from 32- to 64-bit (multilib) slackware, which
provides its own set of problems. It's all hazy now...

I tried getting rid of extensions, .css files, etc., ultimately
installing the latest version (67.0 today) and doing NOTHING to the new
profile except my facebook login. Same thing. The screen reloads, but
the video doesn't play.

No problem with chrome, which I really dislike. I dislike virgin
firefox too, but I can fix that.

Somebody once suggested a codec deficiency, but all the references refer
to not-slackware solutions which only work sometimes and which
frequently refer to nonexistent directories.

I tried installing a 32-bit version of firefox, but it burped on
libgtk-3.... and I've never had success tweaking around with libs :-(

Any ideas?

New install of 67 via separate download. It created a new virgin
profile. I've done this before with previous Quantum versions with
similar results. It doesn't work fresh out of the box.

I'm running Firefox 60.7.0esr (64-bit) on Slackware64-14.2 multilib. No
issues playing youtube or other web embedded videos.

Try install ffmpeg (Slackbuilds.org) and make sure you didn't dump the
typical F/OSS video codecs. FF has a bunch of stuff built in to play webm
[basically a container for VP8/VP9/AV1 (video); Vorbis/Opus (audio)]
assuming you installed libvpx (part of a full stackware install).

Did you somehow wreck your gstreamer-1.0 install? additional gstreamer
codecs are on Slackbuilds.org.

pull up https://www.youtube.com/html5 and fix anything that is missing.
I added x264 and x265 (H.264, H.265) codecs from Slackbuilds.org as well
since some youtube videos aren't transcoded.

Also check in FF under Preferences and see if DRM is enabled ( some vids
may need this), and if you block all cookies that could cause issues. I
allow (no 3rd party) but dump on close.

I doubt that facebook cares about DRM, but it's enabled. I accept all
cookies -- easy enough to throw them away.

I've made it as much like usenet as possible. I see posts ONLY from
friends (most from usenet, some from RL) and friends of friends. I see
no ads. The bad part is that strangers who would be welcome are
excluded unless they're FoF, and that the format itself doesn't
encourage discussion -- just pronouncements.

Most of my usenet friends have switched to facebook, probably because
most of THEIR friends switched to facebook. It's no substitute, but I
don't see anything better. "Forums" are maddening.

Any company that thinks my data might be used to sell me something is
wasting its time and money, which is probably a good thing.

most can be found on youtube, I use duckduckgo search. You have to
allow a lot of script and many cookies to watch network news video,
these can also be found by doing a search.

Curiously enough, I found a video that chrome wouldn't play. It was the
clickbait ad (can't remember where I saw it) that warned you about
eating a certain vegetable. Fortunately there was a text script.

Executive summary: corn, antibiotics and artificial sweeteners will
kill you; buy the guy's book for details. Seems stupid to create an ad
