About:
Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) allows the user
to construct regular expressions and test them against input data by
executing any of a variety of search programs, editors, and programming
languages that make use of regular expressions. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. For each
program, a palette showing the available regular expression syntax is
provided. Selections from the palette may be copied to the regular
expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be added to the
palette via an initialization file. As long as the underlying program
supports Unicode, UTF-8 Unicode is allowed in both test data and regular
expressions.

Changes:
This version added support for Perl, Ruby, and Lua.

This version added support for PHP (ereg, multibyte extensions, and PCRE)
and mawk. Detection of programs or (in the case of PHP) extensions not
available on the user's system was improved. The infrastructure for
localization was added, though no translations are presently ready for
release.

Redet 6.2
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Wed, May 4th 2005 09:21

About:
Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool for
developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version in use and for the user's locale. The locale may be
changed without exiting Redet. Selections from the palette may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be
added to the palette via an initialization file. The regular expressions
executed are recorded in a history list, from which entries may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex
regular expressions to be developed in pieces. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. Named character
classes may be defined in a file or entered interactively. As long as the
underlying program supports Unicode, Redet fully supports UTF-8 Unicode.

Changes:
Widgets for entering diacritics and accented letters were added and the IPA
consonant and vowel entry widgets were improved. A distinction between
bilateral embedding, left embedding, and right embedding is now made when
program features are tested and reflected in the marking of the program
name in the Execute-X menu button. A bug introduced in version 6.1 has
been fixed. In an excess of irony, this bug prevented the bug report popup
from being displayed.

be correct for the program version and locale. Additional features include
persistent history, extensive help, a variety of character entry tools, and
the ability to change locale while running. Redet is highly configurable
and fully supports Unicode.

Changes:
Support was added for glark and jgrep. Tests and palette entries were added
for POSIX multicharacter collating elements, collating sequence names, and
collation classes. Version information for daughter programs is now
reported. A bug in the relabelling of the Configure menu after a change in
locale has been fixed.

and help items were added. Several commands now have keyboard shortcuts. In
particular, it is not necessary to leave the keyboard in order to execute
the regular expression. Three bugs were fixed.

Redet 6.4
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Sat, May 28th 2005 14:03

Changes:
Tests and palette entries are now provided for Java-style possessive
quantifiers. Coordination of scrolling in the two sides of the palette has
been improved. Guile substitution is now supported. Guile regular
expression syntax errors are now trapped.

Redet 7.8
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Sun, Nov 27th 2005 17:10

About:
Redet is a tool for developing and executing regular expressions using any
of more than 30 search programs, editors, and programming languages,
intended both for developing regular expressions for use elsewhere and as
a search tool in its own right. For each program in each locale, a palette
showing the available constructs is provided. The properties of each
program are determined by runtime tests, which guarantees that they will
be correct for the program version and locale. Additional features include
persistent history, extensive help, a variety of character entry tools, and
the ability to change locale while running. Redet is highly configurable
and fully supports Unicode.

Changes:
This release fixes bugs in the history system and result cache, apparently
due to recent file corruption. It also adds the ability to set jgrep
case-sensitivity from the init file, and adds a command to the Help menu
that saves the palette to a file.

Redet 8.6
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 23:55

About:
Redet is a tool for developing and executing regular expressions using any
of more than 40 search programs, editors, and programming languages,
intended both for developing regular expressions for use elsewhere and as
a search tool in its own right.

Changes:
Support for patmatch, a pattern matcher for nucleotide and protein
sequences was added. Keyboard shortcuts may now be defined in the user's
initialization file. A test and palette entry were added for the Tcl-style
case sensitive flag. The Help menu was reorganized and all of the popup
entries were made into toggles. The delimiters for character class
intersection may now be redefined from the initialization file, allowing
this facility to be used with regular expression engines that use
angle-brackets as metacharacters or where it is necessary to match
angle-brackets.

Redet 4.10
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Wed, Jan 26th 2005 14:49

Changes:
Support for Guile was added. Most of the relevant programs match any line
that contains a match to the regular expression. This is a source of
confusion to novices, so if the selected program is of this type, the name
of the program in the Execute-X button is now shown surrounded by
asterisks, e.g. Execute-*Egrep*. A bug that kept the palette from being
generated when the program was redundantly specified in the init file as
the same as the default has been fixed.

Changes:
The init file system has been completely revamped. The number of features
that can be configured from the init file has increased considerably.
Since the new system is incompatible with the old one, a command-line flag
allows old-style files to be used. Font selection has also been greatly
improved, with different fonts for different purposes and a better font
control panel. A bug affecting some combinations of command line options
has been fixed.

Redet 8.17
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Fri, Sep 22nd 2006 23:45

About:
Redet is a tool for developing and executing regular expressions using any
of more than 50 search programs, editors, and programming languages,
intended both for developing regular expressions for use elsewhere and as
a search tool in its own right.

Changes:
The command for moving the content of the result window to the test data
window now checks whether the result window is empty so as to prevent
unintended deletion of the test data due to inadvertant double clicking.
Tooltips were added for all entries in the IPA vowel chart. A bug that
caused the uvular trill button on the IPA consonant chart to not insert
anything was fixed.

Redet 8.8
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Wed, Mar 1st 2006 22:22

About:
Redet is a tool for developing and executing regular expressions using any
of more than 40 search programs, editors, and programming languages,
intended both for developing regular expressions for use elsewhere and as
a search tool in its own right.

Changes:
User-defined named character classes are now disabled by default so as not
to confuse users unaware of them. If the test data, result, or comparison
windows have been made editable, they now remain editable after clearing
and loading operations.

Redet 4.11
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Mon, Jan 31st 2005 02:47

Changes:
In this version, icon is now supported. Command line options providing
information, control over the reading of files on startup, and control
over debugging information have been added. On Unix systems command line
arguments will now work properly when the program is executed directly as
a script. The regular expression history is now appended to a file called
redethist. If this file exists, it is now read by default on startup and
its contents placed in the history list. A bug in which pressing the
History button when the history list was empty triggered an error has been
fixed.

Changes:
A variety of small improvements and minor bugfixes were made. Actions that
are triggered by a right button press on other systems are triggered by
the simultaneous combination of Control and a mouse button press on the
Macintosh. The popup window brought up by the "Key Bindings" command on
the Help menu now lists the key bindings in alphabetical order of the

bindings. Tests were added for capturing and disjunction groups that need
various numbers of backslashes for quoting.

quite detailed. Double-clicking on the notation side deletes the last
entry copied into the regular expression or substitution expression

Redet 6.0
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Mon, Apr 11th 2005 00:42

Changes:
Substitution is now supported in addition to matching. A variety of feature
tests and palette entries have been added, including those for substitution
backreferences, reluctant quantifiers, and the agrep metacharacters. A
number of layout options were added. Various minor improvements were made
and several minor bugs were fixed.

Changes:
This version provides much more sophisticated handling of
case-insensitivity. It tests four parameters of the largely undocumented
variation among programs in the meaning of case-insensitivity options, and
provides these details in the help popup for the case-insensitive flag
entry in the palette. In addition, there are numerous small improvements
and several bugfixes.

by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Mon, Feb 21st 2005 19:22

Changes:
This release contains numerous small improvements. It is now possible to
mark selected entries in the history list so that they can easily be found
later. A command was added for clearing the history list. Commands were
added for saving the test data and comparison data. Options controlling
details of Perl and Python regular expressions, feature test debugging,
and mouse focus were added to the Configure menu. Tests for six palette
features were added. Two minor bugs were fixed.

prefix "Is" and for HTML hex and decimal character references. An
explanatory popup was added for the idiosyncratic Perl [:print:] class.
User-defined named character classes, disabled by default, are now
automatically enabled if the user defines a named character class
interactively. The Makefile and installation instructions have been
improved.

Redet 8.12
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/~billposer/)
Sat, Jun 24th 2006 03:59

About:
Redet is a tool for developing and executing regular expressions using any
of more than 40 search programs, editors, and programming languages,
intended both for developing regular expressions for use elsewhere and as
a search tool in its own right.

Changes:
A command has been added to the File menu that replaces the test data with
the contents of the result window. This is useful for repeatedly narrowing
down a set of data or for carrying out multiple substitutions on the same
data. A command for clearing the existing user-defined character classes
has been added to the character class menu.

Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source
community.
