Harry Potter on ABC

Hello all,

Well, I just finished watching "Harry Potetr and the Sorcerer's Stone"
on ABC. While I like the movie, I was rather disappointed at the way ABC
added soooo many commercials to the show. I missed the first 45 minutes
since I was at my Grandmother's place for Mother's Day, but everything
else seemed to follow the pattern 8 minutes of movie followed by 5
minutes of commercial and after every second commercial break (once or
twice before the commercials) there were bits of 2 minutes at the
longest of the interviewing/hosting with Radcliffe, Grint and Watson.
All in all there was only about 18 minutes per half an hour of show.

Generally, North American half hour shows are 22 minutes of show and 8
minutes of commercials (and 44 to 16 for hour long shows). Than mean a
2.5 hour movie would take ~3.4 hours at the expected ratio. Of the
remaining ~36 minutes to make 4 hours, one would expect that there would
be 26 minutes of the interviews with the trio or the sneaks of "Prisoner
of Azkaban." There's no way the total of the interview/hosting bits plus
the special PoA "preview" equalled 26 minutes. There were just too damn
many commercials. :-P

Those little 2 minutes or less bits were really too short for the trio
to say anything meaningfull, especially since Grint appears to be far
less talkative than Radcliffe or Watson.

Did I like having a chance to see SS again? Yes. Were the interview bits
worth the rather choppy feeling of getting only 8 minutes of movie at a
time followed by having to endure 5 minutes of commercials? Not a
chance. We didn't learn anything new in the bits - it was 90% "Oh, I
really liked working with ...". And the supposed preview of PoA was more
like "Scenes from the making of..." and of the actual clips I didn't
notice anything I hadn't already seen from downloading various trailers.

All in all if you didn't get to see this you didn't miss much. IMNSHO,
the only people who would have gotten anything from this are thos HP
fan(atic)s who are the equivalent of the Star Trek fan(atic)s who dress
up as Klingons and learn the Klingon language to go speak it at the
conventions. (And that is coming from a big Trek fan!) I had higher
jopes for these 4 hours, and I was disappointed.

That's pretty much what they're like in most of the interviews they do
too. Just reserved kids, I guess. (And OMG, Rupert's hair! That looks
*so* cool!)

My sound isn't working on the computer, so I didn't see any point to
downloading the trailers. Wow, was I ever surprised to see Emma punching
Tom! And the patronus of Snape changing clothes was pretty cool. Oh, and
the big spider putting on roller skates, which is a lot better IMO than
what was done in the book.

I really hope this new director does good things for the movies. So far
this one looks a lot more intense.

Um...note that Cuaron is directing ONLY the PRISONER film...
they've already got Mike Newell directing GOBLET.

This was my first exposure to the first film, though I had already
seen the second.Wherever I notice a difference with the book I prefer
the book...didn't that troll look rather too much like Shrek?

So how was the changing clothes part done?
It was not so much changing clothes as it was a transformation.
That was the scene where they are practicing against the Boggart in
Lupin's class. Neville's Boggart appears as the thing he fears most,
Professor Snape. He casts the "Riddikulus!" spell and the Boggart
transforms or morphs into Snape dressed as Neville's Grandmother in a
frumpy green dress with a funny hat.

I expect Catherine will enjoy the thought of Alan Rickman in a dress.

This was Ron's Boggart, of course. He transforms it from a big scarey
spider, bigger than the kids, to a spider that is struggling to stand up
and certainly could not chase you much. I did not actually see the
roller skates. By the way, that's not quite how it went in the book.

it is kind of hard to do as the new voice track need to be dropped in to the

It depends on my mood. The typeing is a little better when I take the time but
often the problum is not getting the spell checker to work and giveing up and
just going with the sound.
The spech to text often is worse the me a dyslexic with bad typing. and I don't
mind people who tell me about the mess ups as long as they don't do it to every
word and get snippy.
but no one has done that here in a long while.
it all so does not help that my systems dictinuary is a cheap one that does not
have many of the words used on this group.

Given the amount of data that can be stored on a DVD, it's a shame
that such descriptions aren't automatically included as an option, the
way most movies on DVD have an extra Spanish-language version.

Hello all,
Well, I just finished watching "Harry Potetr and the Sorcerer's Stone"

All in all if you didn't get to see this you didn't miss much. IMNSHO,
the only people who would have gotten anything from this are thos HP
fan(atic)s who are the equivalent of the Star Trek fan(atic)s who dress
up as Klingons and learn the Klingon language to go speak it at the
conventions. (And that is coming from a big Trek fan!) I had higher
jopes for these 4 hours, and I was disappointed.

BTW, Emma is getting to look like a fine young lady. I feel we'll see

As far as the ABC presentation is concerned it was par for the business

Hello all,
Well, I just finished watching "Harry Potetr and the Sorcerer's Stone"

Definitely a drinking game situation. And you could also add that you
take a drink every time Emma tossed or played with her interestingly
arranged hair.

Heh. :)

It was VERY irritating when Daniel was trying to describe the scene with
himself riding the Knight Bus, and Emma cut in, overtook the conversation, and
began to describe a scene she was not even in. :(

Anyone who watched the showing of 10.5 on NBC als o saw that they added
a lot more commercial time than normal. We are in sweeps time - which
means they are showing event programming - and trying to add to their
balance sheets as well. In addition, the economic recovery (Even slow as
it is in creating jobs) has more businesses looking for an audience -
and when given the option of taking money or not - networks opt for the
former.

Hello all,
Well, I just finished watching "Harry Potetr and the Sorcerer's Stone"
on ABC.
I watched all four hours, and actually enjoyed it, mainly for the little
bits of clip of the third movie. There were lots of shots that have not
been in the trailers, which was great. I have seen the movie too many
times to enjoy the movie itself. You are right that there wasn't much
new in the movie itself; actually made you appreciate good editing.
Only part I thought added to the movie, that wasn't in released movie,
was bit right after they killed the troll and Ron acknowledged Hermoine
was their friend, although I liked the way the book did it better.
I did not like the additions to the movie before Harry meets Hagrid, the
egg scene and the bit where Harry questions Petunia about his uniform.
The true Harry would never have asked the Dursleys whether he was going
to Smeltings, and would have known they were not going to send him
there, and wouldn't have wanted to go to Smeltings. Also, when Neville
was in the leg lock curse, in the book, Hermoine undid the curse; in the
new scene, Hermoine just left him, that is out of character for her.

That was a silly addition. I suppose they thought it was a way to
introduce the idea that Dudley would be going away to school.

Maybe I wasn't reading SS correctly, but I thought the letters were
simply hidden in the egg carton, not in the egg itself. The way the
movie was filmed (and fortunately edited out), the letters were in the
eggs; creepy.

<<On Saturday, things began to get out of hand. Twenty-four letters to Harry
found their way into the house, rolled up and hidden inside each of the two
dozen eggs that their very confused milkman had handed Aunt Petunia through the
living room window. While Uncle Vernon made furious telephone calls to the post
office and the dairy trying to find someone to complain to, Aunt Petunia
shredded the letters in her food processor.>>

I didn't care for those either. The scene with Petunia seemed awfully
weird. The papers she pulled out seemed to be the nenvelopes, but
there was no way the letters were inside. And how did they get into
eggs that she had to have bought at the store. And he reaction seemed
fine for the first movie, but doesn't make sense after OOTP. She knows
more than she lets on, and it is best for her to keep quiet early on.

Also, when Neville

I find this scene very funny, but I do agree that they should have
added 5-10 seconds for Hermoine to do the countercurse. It did seem
out of character to leave him like that.

The eggs were delivered to the house by the dairyman. When I was a kid

Yes, but there is still the same problem. The eggs were purchased from

to intefere with them. Nobody else got any eggs with letters in them.

The letters were put into the eggs by magic, operating at a distance
(probably as soon as the carton was handed in through the window).
I suppose Hagrid realized Harry wasn't being allowed to receive
anything that looked like a letter, but also realized that Harry
occasionally had to tend the breakfast cooking, and might therefore
have a chance to crack open an egg and maybe grab a letter that way.

I don't think Hagrid was responsible for those letters. I think he did
the one at the end only. I think McGonagall was the one sending the

Hagrid isn't that good at magic. I don't think he could have done
those eggs.

Ah, but Hagrid keeps chickens. He's been doing agricultural magic
_without_ official permission for years, witness the huge pumpkins
and so on. So he has had years of practice, and lots of eggs to
practice on. I think McGonagall sent the letters with owls, or at
least authorized Hagrid to do it, but he said he had been allowed
to do magic to get the letter(s) to Harry. Some of that was Hagrid's
work.

that's what you're going to get.

Did you sit through the news the find out why "the magic is going out

Did you sit through the news the find out why "the magic is going out
of Harry Potter"? In fact, what did they expect? Everybody who wants
the books, has them and frankly the sales have to "plateau"
eventually.
What news about "the magic..going out of Harry Potter"? I would be
interested in hearing about it.

.
I just bought the first 4 books in paperback for my sister (only $22 on
Amazon) so I am contributing to the cause. It would seem only natural
to me that book sales would fall off--it can't last forever. But it
also means Scholatic will be wanting JKR to get her 6th book in for
publication as soon as possible, which is good news, so long as JKR
doesn't rush through and sacrifice quality.

Well, I just finished watching "Harry Potetr and the Sorcerer's Stone"
on ABC. While I like the movie, I was rather disappointed at the way ABC
added soooo many commercials to the show. I missed the first 45 minutes
Having missed 45 minutes of the movie, you missed the fact that they'd
re-inserted the "missing scenes" from the Dursely's sequences. The
commercials didn't bother me that much, I know it's commercial TV and
that's what you're going to get.
Yes, I know all about commercial TV. I wasn't compalining abut tehre
being commercials but about the fact that there were so many of them and
that ABC chopped up the movie in to such little blocks

No, I didn't. The ABC station I get on cable is in Buffalo New York, and
sicne I like in Kitchener, Ontario there's no reason for me to watch the
local Buffalo news at 11pm. But what does that have to do with ABC
putting in more commercials for this than they do for anything else?

THey didn't have that on our news. They had some hint of Harry Potter,
so I got home just before 11pm and sat through the whole news (on a
station I don't normally watch), and all they said was that GOF woudl
start filiming soon and would feature Harry's first love. And that was
less than a minute at the very end.

Professor Quirrell came sprinting into the hall, his turban askew and
terror on his face. Everyone stared as he reached Professor
Dumbledore's chair, slumped against the table, and gasped,

He then sank to the floor in a dead faint.

It had "scenes never before shown on TV," and a preview of the third movie.
Presented in such a way as to confuse the two, IMO. I think the "scenes
never before shown on TV" were in the theatrical release, but cut, then
resotred.

If they were important to the original story, they would have been there in
the first place. I don't think anyone missed anything not watching ABC's
commercial riddled broadcast, especially if they were not watching in HDTV
(which I don't know if the film was broadcast in or not, usually ABC does
broadcast movies in HDTV.)

Actually , the repeat showing was a cut version of the picture without
the added material and without the commentary by the kids. The DVD was
better than this.

It wasn't just that they didn't include the deleted scenes (I didn't
expect the commentary or the preview at one hour less) but they edited
the original film to pieces, it was very choppy. We turned it off
about 15 minutes in. The way they hacked the film was terrible!

That's why I gave up watching movies on network TV a long time ago.

I've seen them take a two-hour movie and show it in two hours - except
that it's packed full of commercials. So what came out so the
commercials could go in? If you've never seen the film before, you
won't even know there are great hunks of it missing. Add to that the
constant interruptions for commercials, and the annoying nature of the
commercials themselves, plus the censorship involved, and it just
isn't worth it. I can handle regular TV shows (at least the shows are
designed to have deliberate breaks for the ads), but not for
theatrical movies. Given the restrictions of broadcast TV, they just
can't handle them.

I see the films that really interest me in theatres, and the rest on
DVD.

You are correct. Does anyone have a tape of the FOUR hour TV version

place to rent it, at least at this point.

The DVD has the deleted scenes separate from the movie. The broadcast
on the 9th had them in the movie where they belong.

Also, the broadcast had some extra stuff with the trio and some scenes
from the new movie. Those are certainly not on the DVD.

The DVD has the deleted scenes separate from the movie. The broadcast
on the 9th had them in the movie where they belong.
Also, the broadcast had some extra stuff with the trio and some scenes
from the new movie. Those are certainly not on the DVD.
That is correct. There is no place to rent or buy this version, to my
knowledge.

Do you know if ABC is going to repeat it? Thank you for any info in
advance.

There are no plans to repeat the LONG version of SS at ABC - with or
without the Kids comments.

But I'm expecting a DVD with the long version and the kids will probably
be an extra, not interspersed during the ad breaks which surely won't
exist in a DVD.

Actually, some of the extra scenes shown in the movie are on the DVD,
they are in the "Deleted Scenes" section of the DVD. You just have to go
through a lot of rigmarole to get to the "Deleted Scenes". In the
broadcast version, the "Deleted Scenes" were inserted back into the
correct place.

Did anyone here record the full Harry Potter movie that is now showing
on ABC? It is a repeat from last week. My wife -- yes, my wife -- missed
the first hour and would love to have a tape of it. We can copy it,
should some kind soul be willing to permit us to do so.
You can rent or buy the video/DVD you know... :)

Your last name wouldn't be "England" by any chance, would it?
You know, as in "Pfc. Lynndie England, 21, of West Virginia"?
There seems to be a certain, uh, how shall I say, "consistency" of
behavior. I guess that is your point, and your real name is simply:
