Discussion:
Honor Harrington and the Aeslin Mice

Finished up "Uncompromising Honor" last night. Weber finally had some
action on the various wars that are in progress. Once again thousands
and thousands of multiple drive missiles make clear to the Queen's
enemies that they screwed up real bad.

So over dinner tonight I started "Discount Armageddon, An InCryptid
Novel", which opens with “I really don’t think you should put your
hand inside the manticore, dear. You don’t know where it’s been.”

I sprayed soda all over everything and then nearly choked to death
laughing. Left the waitress a big tip for having to clean up the
mess.

Good advice for The People's Republic of Haven, The Mesan Alignment,
The Solarian League, and I forget who all else has gotten hammered in
the 25 years that Honor Harrington has been rampaging through the
enemies of Manticore.

OK, the Aeslin Mice don't figure much in the above remarks, but I
can't help thinking that "Keep that up and I'll get a pulser-armed
treecat" (Stinker learns to shoot in this one) is a more dire threat
to the Aeslin Mice than "Keep that up and I'll get a cat".

The dire threat to the Aeslin Mice is the Covenant of St. George.
But you knew that. I don't know how the Healy/Price clan go
about protecting their Mice (who are, note, a seriously
endangered species) from cats. Perhaps they get their cats in as
kittens and teach them that the Mice are their friends? I have
seen pictures of cats cuddling up to gerbils, guinea pigs, and
parakeets. Not to mention innumerable dogs and cats cuddling up
to each other. It's all in how one is brought up.

ObCats-and-Mice: Breaking Cat News, in which the cats outnumber
the People, and which features five Robber Mice who eventually
reform.

The artist rebooted the series from start a year or so ago, and has
been re-using some material. The Robber Mice have not shown up
yet. Here's the current strip, from which you can go back to the
beginning if you like:

Actually I didn't. I am about 20 pages into my first encounter with
them and so far they have created sufficient chaos for their roomate
that she has threatened to obtain a cat, which is not to be used as a
burnt offering. Thus the notion of Nimitz with pulser. Much less
likely to be successfully used as a burnt offering than an ordinary
cat.

Yes, that was part of the description. I don't think that it would
help when dealing with a treecat armed with Manticoran military
weapons.

That's my point--the cat was being used as a threatened disciplinary
measure. I think that Nimitz would be a more effective threatened
disciplinary measure, however when a joke has had this much
explanation it ceases to be worth the effort.

Hey, if Walt Simonson could turn The Mighty Thor into a frog,
and get a decent story...

One fan saw it as an homage to the Greek:

"Battle of Frogs and Mice"

ObFandom: Simonson's STAR SLAMMERS artwork began as a part
of the eventually successful DisCon II bid by WSFA.

Yes, that was part of the description. I don't think that it would
help when dealing with a treecat armed with Manticoran military
weapons.
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ablative_armor> - hmm, that's mainly

that's what a lightsaber is for.)
Putting a word in front of "armor" doesn't make the armor magic. I
doubt that any armore that can be carried by a mouse would be
effective against a weapon that can kill an armored human.

Ablative armor works by sacrificing itself. The major use is
heat-shields where the time interval over which it needs to function
can be well-defined.

Novel", which opens with ? really don? think you should put your
hand inside the manticore, dear. You don? know where it? been.?
I sprayed soda all over everything and then nearly choked to death
laughing. Left the waitress a big tip for having to clean up the
mess.
Good advice for The People's Republic of Haven, The Mesan Alignment,
The Solarian League, and I forget who all else has gotten hammered in
the 25 years that Honor Harrington has been rampaging through the
enemies of Manticore.

Gosh. Reminds me of somebody who used to post on USENET (no

Sounds like my mother's cat Rhondabell. We were always told,
don't try to pet the cat, don't go near the cat, you'll regret
it. (She was an outside cat in the country, and wasn't easily
approached, anyway, except by my mother.)

Dang cat brought her a present one day ...

A freshly killed coral snake.

The time that my mother's cat (different cat, this one was nice as he
could be to people but death on animals) set out to make lunch out of
a rattlesnake my father panicked and spoiled the cat's fun by killing
the snake. OTOH, I don't know that the cat had ever fought a
rattlesnake before so maybe my Dad made the right decision.

Ours were all indoor cats, and never got to kill anything.

No, I am wrong; J-L was an outdoor cat and liked to climb trees
and leap from one to the other, catching birds in mid-flight.

Gwenhwyfar, however, recreated a nursery rhyme once by scaring
the wits out of a mouse hiding under the throne of the Princess

One of ours I'll swear thought he was a squirrel. He'd run up trees,
leap from branch to branch, etc. Trouble is that then he couldn't
figure out how to get down. He finally resolved that by jumping I
think.

Speaking of jumping, Tigger the Obnoxious Tomcat, when he was rather
young, was once seen way up a Southern Yellow Pine, crying piteously.
My then girfriend insisted that I get him down forthwith. I tolder
"after breakfast", went in, fed the other cats, got breakfast, and
when we were done there was Tigger waiting to come in. He must have
been 80 feet up that tree and I would really have liked to see how he
got down without mangling himself.
