Arafat's condition worsening seriously

The condition of Yasser Arafat, in a French hospital
for treatment of an unidentified ailment, has
deteriorated significantly over the past day, a
Palestinian official said early Thursday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity,
confirmed a report on Channel 2 that Arafat was in very
serious condition. He said that so far doctors have not
determined what is wrong with him, as tests have come
back without positive results, but Arafat's condition
took a turn for the worse on Wednesday.

Arafat was flown to the French hospital on Friday, two
days after his ailment caused him to lose consciousness
for a short time at his west Bank headquarters.

Israel's Channel 2 reported that the Palestinian leader
was moved to an intensive care unit in the French
military hospital outside Paris, after his condition
worsened.

The television report gave no further details. TV
reporter Ehud Yaari told The Associated Press he was
quoting Palestinian officials as saying Arafat was "in
very serious condition."

Former security minister Muhammad Dahlan denied the
report saying Arafat is in a "stable condition."

Speaking from Paris to the pan-Arab news channel
al-Jazeera, Dahlan said that doctors are yet to
determine the cause for Arafat's poor health, yet
maintained that no sudden deterioration has occurred.

Earlier, the Palestinian envoy to France, Leila Shahid,
said Arafat felt well enough to ask about the US
presidential election. An aide later issued a statement
in Arafat's name congratulating George W. Bush on his
re-election.

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Israel is
closely monitoring the health of Palestinian leader
Yasser Arafat and is preparing for the "day after" his
death.

"We are tracking his condition very carefully," he told
Israel Radio. "Our goal is to prepare for the day
after, if and when he dies."

Israeli intelligence was widely criticized after it was
caught off guard last week when Arafat's health
suddenly deteriorated and he was flown to Paris for
treatment.

Although no details are known about Arafat's ailment,
Shalom said his condition "is very serious." At the
same time, he said, "it is too soon to eulogize Yasser
Arafat," and Israel expected the picture to clarify
within the next week.

Israel believes Arafat may have cancer, or possibly a
serious infection, he said. "We are preparing for every
eventuality," he said.

Above everything else,
Arafat was a shrewd geopolitician who knew
how to manipulate the world to his ―
not his ‘people's’ ― advantage

By Zev Chafets

What the Egyptian-born ‘Palestinian’'s successor
needs to know in order to survive

I once asked a Palestinian friend who lives in the
West Bank how he managed to criticize Yasser Arafat out
loud and stay alive. This was years ago, shortly after
Palestine Liberation Organization gunmen had murdered a
mutual acquaintance of ours, a Palestinian merchant
named Joncho, in the doorway of his shop in downtown
Ramallah.

"Joncho had a small family," he said. "I belong to a
big clan. I have relatives in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria,
Jordan, all over."

"So?"

My friend smiled thinly. "Arafat knows he can't touch
me. My family would take revenge. We have guns, too."

There have always been two Yasser Arafats. One was the
international Arafat ― revolutionary performance
artist, terrorist pioneer and, in later years, elder
statesman. That's the Arafat who appeared at the United
Nations with a pistol in his belt, the Arafat who
hobnobbed with popes and presidents and won the Nobel
Prize for Peace.

International Arafat always has been a master diplomat
and astute geopolitician. He realized early that Arab
dictators would pay to keep the Palestinian issue alive
because it gave them an all-purpose diversion from the
disaster they were wreaking on their own societies. He
became custodian of the Palestinian grievance for
everyone from Egypt's Gamal Abdel Nasser to the Saudi
Royal Family, from Libya's Moammar Khadafy to Saddam
Hussein.

Arafat also was lucky in his choice of enemies. Third
World nationalists do not usually attract much
attention ― just ask the Kurds. But taking on Israel
put Arafat in the big leagues. He became a hero to the
Soviet bloc and, later, to European "progressives" who
never really have seen the need for a Jewish state.

But no matter how many capitals he visited, no matter
how many accolades he received, there always was a
second Arafat, a neighborhood bully for whom all
politics was local ― and violent.

This Arafat has dominated Palestinian political life
for decades for the simplest of reasons: He has always
had the most guns.

Local Arafat was, in his prime, a powerful warlord,
but his rule was never absolute. There were lines he
could not cross. He rarely went after the sons of
powerful clans. And he did not alienate the Palestinian
mainstream by making peace with Israel.

True, Arafat came close during the Oslo process. But
at Camp David in 2000, he pulled back when he saw that
his people would not stand for it.

An agreement would have been seen as an act of
betrayal, and Arafat did not have enough guns to make
it stick.

Instead, he turned the guns on Israel. The intifadeh
was an all-or-nothing gamble, and Arafat lost. For the
past two years, he has been holed up in a wrecked
bunker, surrounded by flunkies, watching himself
disappear. But at least he stayed alive.

Arafat may survive his current medical crisis, too.
But he is 75, visibly diminished and detached from
reality. His coterie will try to keep him propped up,
Oz-like, as long as possible. But that won't be for
long.

Who will replace Arafat? There are two answers.
Western diplomats almost certainly will seize on one
Abu or another as their designated statesman. But
eventually this figurehead will run up against the
local reality that Arafat both fostered and accepted:
The majority of Palestinians do not want peace if it
requires a compromise with Israel.

Arafat's real heir will be someone who understands
this. Like Arafat, he will be the guy with the most
guns and the shrewdest sense of where he can use them ―
and what Palestinian red lines he cannot cross without
winding up dead.

ARAFAT TERMED CLINICALLY DEAD

RAMALLAH [MENL] -- Palestinian Authority Chairman
Yasser Arafat has died. He was 75 years old.

Israeli and Palestinian officials said Arafat died on
Thursday in a military hospital in Paris.

They said Arafat was deemed clinically dead, but still
attached to life support systems on the insistence of
his wife, Suha.

"He is dead, but neither Arafat's wife nor the
Palestinian leadership is ready to announce this," a PA
official said. "The announcement could take place on Friday."

Israeli officials confirmed that Arafat died on
Thursday. They said Arafat was termed brain dead and
physicians have stopped attending to him.

Informed by a reporter of Arafat’s death, Bush declared
Thursday: God rest his soul. We will go on working to
establish a free Palestinian state that will work with
Israel to achieve peace.

Amid confusing statements over Palestinian leader’s
condition, Palestinian PM Ahmed Qureia assumes some of
his powers as Palestinian Authority chairman while
Palestinian officials attempt to hammer out order of
succession in Ramallah.

Activity sparked by Luxembourg prime minister’s
announcement that Arafat had died Thursday evening. In
Paris, Percy hospital issued a denial, stating his
condition had deteriorated and he was under treatment
in intensive care unit.

DEBKAfile’s sources report both statements true if
Arafat is brain dead and kept alive on life support
machines. Paris may be delaying final announcement for
all-clear from Palestinian officials. Hence confusion.

Paris media report Arafat died a few minutes ago
[that was early this morning]

DEBKAfile’s Palestinian sources: Palestinian succession
contest begins before Arafat’s funeral. Extremist Jihad
Islami, Hamas and Abbas’s opponents begin to plant
concocted rumor that Israel poisoned Arafat.

They are blackening Israel to justify continuation of
Palestinian terror campaign and ascertain that angry
Palestinian street will never tolerate any moderate
leaders’ peace dialogue initiative, but insist on war.

Arafat’s life support systems will be shut down when
his wife Suha gives permission. Funeral arrangements
not yet agreed by squabbling Palestinian officials. Two
possible venues are Gaza and Jerusalem suburb of Abu Dis.

Sharon has ruled out - Jerusalem and the West Bank. ie
it must be in Gaza or not at all.

Perhaps you'll be better able to grasp what was said if you learned how to

I know it *is* a tall order expecting Yanks to use English correctly; but

What is it with you jew media people?
Perhaps you'll be better able to grasp what was said if you learned how to
use English correctly - "Jewish" is the adjective, not "Jew"!
The word "jew" (please do not dignify it by capitalising it) can be a
noun, an adjective or a verb, according to usage.

Palestinian leader is said to have expired minutes

Judging by how it's starting out - in heated
political struggle - I suspect it's a future
bathed in blood.

What's the old phrase - "The more things change,
the more they stay the same" ? Or how about "Here
comes the new boss, same as the old boss" ?

Funeral arrangements in Ramallah go forward and guests
start out for Cairo even as senior Palestinian cleric
Sheikh Taissir Tamimi maintains in Paris Wednesday that
Arafat whom he has seen is alive and may not be
disconnected from life support machines. To deepen
confusion, PLO envoy Shahid declares he is in last
phase of his life.

Earlier, Israel permitted Arafat burial to take place
in Ramallah Π as per Palestinian request. Palestinian
authorities will be held responsible for security.

Mass attendance from Gaza Strip barred - but for VIPs
according to lists submitted in advance. The rest of
the West Bank is locked in by blockades.

Israel military, police and Shin Beit heads refused to
accept risk of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians
streaming to Ramallah from Gaza Strip and West Bank
towns. The mass movement would be exploited to
replenish terrorist networks alongside Israel’s
population heartland undoing painstaking counter-terror
efforts of past years.

Before leaving the French capital, Palestinian
officials came to terms with his widow, Suha Arafat.
DEBKAfile's sources reveal some of the provisions of
the Palestinian Authority's pay-out, amounting to a
$22m per annum "pension"

Evidently not in this case. See Suha's Payout
Last evening in our newspaper I saw an illustration of all the money that
never has shown up for use by the Palestinians. Like the $500million per
year ('95-2000) from the Israelis in tax-rebates that never made it to the
attention of anyone. Very interesting things on that illustration. That
one surprised me the most. I wonder anyone ever thought that was being
done? I think there must be a huge amount of assets that are buried in many
places. Norma

By religious law he must be buried within 24 hours of "death". My guess is
when everything is locked down and everyone is happy with the arrangements
for succession, etc., they'll yank the plug, declare him officially dead and
start counting the hours ...

Now if they can just keep a leash on his bereaved mink-laden widow ...

Arafat is dead in the land of quiche, mousse,
croissant, vichysoisse, and Jew-hatred, consulting with
Generalissimo Francisco Franco. And it is not a time
for Israel or her friends to celebrate.

Nothing will change in 'Palestine' during the
transition from kaffiyehs and holsters to suits and ties

By Dov Fischer

The irony for Israel and her supporters is that
Arafat always has provided a clarity that many others
around him obfuscate because the others wear business
suits and ties rather than kaffiyehs and gun-holsters.
They speak more cleverly, in the manner of Hanan
Ashrawi and Saeb Erekat, than Arafat ever has. In his
absence, extraordinary pressure will mount against
Israel, even from her friends, who will insist: "We
stood with you for all the Arafat Years and refused to
meet with Arafat and turned a blind eye to your
military actions in Jenin and throughout Gaza, even
your targeted elimination-hits aimed at removing the
schemers of terror and the "ticking bombs." We backed
you ― overtly or through our silence ― as you acted to
offset and counter Arafat's terror. Now, with him gone,
we expect you to reciprocate and 'make overtures' to
the Palestinian Authority and 'take risks for peace' so
that his successor(s) can bring 'hope' that a new day
is dawning."

Israel will be posed with The Global Test.

Thus, Arafat's departure to better French cuisine ―
well, they may not be serving mousse where he is going,
although he may recognize Napoleon ― is going to make
it much harder for Israel to explain her cognition
that, beneath their suits and ties, Arafat's successors
bring the same agenda to destroy Israel. The children's
textbooks of "Palestine" will continue to teach hate
against Jews. Look to see whether they are withdrawn.
The children's television programs of "Palestine" will
continue to encourage them to blow themselves up and
murder Jews. Look to see whether they are canceled from
the Fall TV line-up. The children's summer camps of
"Palestine" will continue training them to murder. Look
to see whether the camp offerings are changed to arts
and crafts. Well, maybe leave it at arts. The
newspapers of "Palestine" will continue running
crossword puzzles that define Israel out of existence.
Look to see whether they change the clues. Town Squares
of "Palestine" will retain their names in honor of
suicide bombers. Look to see whether they are re-named
for peace advocates.

Nothing will change in "Palestine" during the
transition from kaffiyehs and holsters to suits and
ties.

Even with British Prime Minister Tony Blair
congratulating President George W. Bush by welcoming
his reelection, pledging continued support for the War
in Iraq ― and then reminding President Bush that
Blair's agenda calls for moving full-speed on "Mideast
Peace" as soon as the War in Iraq resolves itself. So
Israel is in for some profoundly rough riding after the
calm. Presumably that is why Israeli prime Minister
Ariel Sharon wanted his questionable "Half-the-loaf
is-better-than-nothing" solution on the table ―
securing President Bush's full blessing for that plan
to retreat from Gaza but to hold high-density Jewish
communities in Judea and Samaria ― while Arafat still
is/was around. So Mr. Sharon got his plan on the table
to fill the vacuum opened when the Bush "Roadmap" got
blown up ― just as had the Zinni Plan before it, and
all the many, many plans that preceded that one dating
back forty years to the Rogers Plan.

Now Arafat is dead in the land of quiche, mousse,
croissant, vichysoisse, and Jew-hatred, consulting with
Generalissimo Francisco Franco. And it is not a time
for Israel or her friends to celebrate.

Those fine folks from Hamas, the Palestine Liberation
Organization, Islamic Jihad, Force 17, the Palestine
Authority, Tanzim, the Popular Front for the Liberation
of Palestine, the Al Aksa Martyrs' Brigades, and all
the other candidates are sharpening their knives and
donning their suicide belts ― while the Hanan Ashrawis
and Saeb Erekats prepare their endorsements ― for the
new season of primaries, "Palestine-style." The "Blow
Up the Vote" drives in Ramallah and Jenin are coming ―
not sure who will be doing the concerts, but Michael
Moore can't be far behind.

After they finish with each other, the survivors will
turn their attention on Israel. Israel will have to be
very, very strong. We know what the Global Test from
France, Germany, and Russia will try to impose, and we
know what Kofi Annan's United Nations will demand of
Israel. But what will Israel's friends in Washington
demand?

Israel will have to be very, very strong ―

After they finish with each other, the survivors will
turn their attention on Israel. Israel will have to be
very, very strong. We know what the Global Test from
France, Germany, and Russia will try to impose, and we
know what Kofi Annan's United Nations will demand of
Israel. But what will Israel's friends in Washington
demand?
Israel will have to be very, very strong ―

Arafat is officially dead
Palestinians senior sources in Paris report Yasser
Arafat is dead.
Palestinian leader is said to have expired minutes
after Palestinian PM Qureia visited him at Percy
hospital in Paris.
And smothered him with his pillow no doubt ...
Post by LeMod Pol
This means that Qureia cut a deal with Suha, so she
allowed the plug pulled.
Likely.

Now the fun begins. Every Palestinian militant
wants to be the next Arafat. They'll be killing
each other in droves for the next decade ....

The Republicans are going for the Dem jugular in 2008 with Pataki or
Giuliani for president, putting New York state in play, and Condi or
Colin for vice president, putting the black American vote into play. The
Dem response is to run Hillary. Hilarious.

Unfortunately there will be some spill-over. Punk
militants - with no name or claim - will try to
rise through the ranks by launching bold offensives
against Israelis. "See ! I killed 77 kindergarten
Jew-kids ! Am I not the best, the boldest, the right
man to lead ?" .....

BTD: (us.politics) I don't know if this is true or not because The Mod is
such a filthy low life liar.
But I feel bad it f it is and I'm a Jew and a member of the President's
Council of the World Jewish Congress

Things would have been different if Gore had won the election

I extend my condolences.
