In no particular order.

Remember ...

When fins were called skegs?

And when boards didn't have one skeg, let alone three?

When guys still rode paddleboards?

When the only difference between surfboard wax and preserving wax was
the sand?

When the guy who made the surf movie ran the projector and narrated it
with a microphone that sometimes worked?

When most the photos in a surf mag were b&w?

When there were no surf mags?

When Paddleboard Cove was a premier surfing spot?

When you could surf at Dana Point, Ballona Creek, Hubbyland, POP,
Lighthouse and Hendry's?

When no one but divers wore wetsuits?

When no one at all had leashes.

When no one bothered to lock their car?

When Eddie Sullivan knew that nobody bothered to lock their car?

When Tennis Shoe Ernie did the rock dance with a smile on his face?

When the body in the shorebreak was usually Mitch the Masochist?

When you could always find a place to park at Windansea?

When you could always find a place to park on the PCH right in front
of Malibu and Rincon?

When Vince Moorehouse ruled at Huntington Beach Pier?

When no one but kooks surfed Huntington Cliffs"

When Seal Beach banned surfing?

When MSD's girlfriend squatted on his chest?

When there was just one traffic light on the PCH between Topanga and
Oxnard?

When there were NO traffic lights on the PCH between Santa Monica and
Santa Barbara?

When the PCH was called the Roosevelt Highway?

When Buzzy Trent was a lifeguard at State Beach?

What the Cocksmen's club was?

When LAPD cop, Bob Ernst got in trouble for throwing a board in his
patrol car and rushing, red lights and siren from West LA down to the
Lighthouse for a surf?

When you could drive from Palos Verdes to Hope Ranch without ever
leaving the coast?

When bottle caps were flipped before, during and after surf films?

When wearing a Pendleton shirt with your jeans and white Penny's
T-shirt was the height of winter fashion?

When you could find a good place to hide your car and sneak in to surf
Cotton's, Trestle's an Church?

When Hussongs was not full of turistas?

When you could buy anything your little heart desired at any pharmacia
in Tijuana?

When a kilo brick of da good kine da kine cost under $100?

When there were only waves at Hollywood-by-the-Sea?

When there were beach huts at Windansea, Malibu and Little Dume?

When lifeguards surfed and surfers lifeguarded?

When the Malibu Inn was full of CHP cops, drunks, surfers, pancakes
and photos of the stars?

When waves were shared between friends?

When ... ?

When ... ?
The Marina Palace at PCh & 1st in Seal Beach?

When abalone were plentiful?

When a boat ran aground in the mouth of the San Gabriel river and was left
there to decay, creating a sandbar with an awesome wave?

When Broadway St. ran from Long Beach to Seal Beach over the bay?

Surfside jetty?

Parking along PCH at Huntington Cliffs?

When Thousand Steps was a nude/private beach and a secret spot?

When Dana Point was?

When Wedge was just bodysurfers and an occasional fiberglass bodyboard or
kneeboard?

When bodysurfing breaks weren't full of sponges?

The Golden Bear in Huntington?

The power plant in Seal Beach?

Five finger lids for 10 bucks?

When the road in baja was mostly dirt?

The Pike in Long Beach?

Rainbow Pier in Long Beach?

Waves in Long Beach?

More?

When Dana Point was?
I last surfed it circa 1961.

When...

There was no damned pier in Ocean Beach, SD that ruined the "Off the Rocks"
left.

When Highway One was THE north-south route in San Diego county.

When short boards were something for short people.

When the words "sea wall" were not part of North San Diego county.

When Novaks sold Bombers.

When a brand new Hobie cost an outrageous $120.

The day that Highway 5 was one long Marine convoy from Pendleton to San Diego.
Marines in trucks as far as the eye could see north or south.

When Phil Edwards was "the best surfer in the world."

When Petey(sp?) became the youngest surfer to ride Wamiea Bay and it was in a
surf movie.

When riding the Pipeline was a rumor.

When running to the nose and crashing was considered great surf footage.

Only so far as what Goering's boast can teach us about today's

for this cynical ruse.

And by 'leadership' I am not referring to that brain-dead white trash
puppet who can barely string a sentence together, but the individuals
who pull his strings. b

ybob, don't enter a battle of wits with a fool - he'll drag you

Goering's
philosophy was and is a tru-ism that speaks for itself.
And that is exactly what it is, a Tru-ism. Not a "cynical ruse", not
"Goering's philosophy" or even a "boast". Just because a once Nazi
said it and Bob applied it out of context in an effort to appear
pseudo-intellectual does not minimalize the truth behind the words.

Imagine if our county were under a threat of attack, the leaders
rallied the populace in the name of self preservation and the so
called "peace makers" resisted that call. We should heed a frickin
Nazi instead? Does this give the tru-ism more credibility?

Bob seems to suggest that there is some kind of nobility in laying
down for a tummy rub because of a Nazi quote.

It acts as a sort of wake up call, when you see a strategy employed by
our nations leaders that was once employed by a notorious past
group of leaders for the same reason.

It kinda suggests that Nazis and the US government are manipulating
their popular support in similar ways. And if you find that offensive,
maybe you should explore those ideas a little more, to see if there is
more there than you'd previously realized. I am genuinely scared about
the potential path our government may take.

Personally, I was surprised to read that you were feeding on range fed
beef. Always thought of you as the original "survivor-hunter" that would
be seeking out wild game (truly "range fed") such as elk, pronghorn, mule
deer or whatever large stock roams your wildnerness. After preparing your
game in the wild you would proceed to make your own sushi cuts and age the
rest of the beef in a specially manufactured house of slats germane to
your region, in a special "smoke" house. NOT???

I wouldn't know. The bigass bird in question was a plump grouse sitting
about 10 feet off the side of a back road. I stopped and showed the
kids while the grouse just looked back, same as the half-jillion
blacktails running around that spot.

I was kidding about the Glock though. Not having it (I did) but about
seriously thinking about shooting a bird on the ground.

Rod, you're showing your ignorance again...

No one shoots possums, waste of a cartridge. Tree him with dawgs and
put 'im in a heavy sack and take 'im home. Then you pen 'im up for a
week or so feedin 'im corn and table scraps to clean all the car'n out.
When yer ready to eat 'im, bash his brains out with an axe handle while
he's a hissin at yer. Gut, skin, boil then bake with sweet potatoes.
Meat looks somethin like pork but greasier.

I've never eaten one but for a previous generation of my family, it was
a meal for special occassions.

Meat looks somethin like pork but greasier.

I've never eaten one but for a previous generation of my family, it was
a meal for special occassions.

I can highly recommend raccoon, slow roasted. Especially one that's been
living on chicken and orchard drops. A little slippery, kinda like the best
pork.

Oh, and for that nagging grouse problem, may I suggest one of these:

Personally, I was surprised to read that you were feeding on range fed
beef. Always thought of you as the original "survivor-hunter" that would
be seeking out wild game (truly "range fed") such as elk, pronghorn, mule
deer or whatever large stock roams your wildnerness. After preparing your
game in the wild you would proceed to make your own sushi cuts and age the
rest of the beef in a specially manufactured house of slats germane to
your region, in a special "smoke" house. NOT???

It kinda suggests that Nazis and the US government are manipulating
their popular support in similar ways. And if you find that offensive,
maybe you should explore those ideas a little more, to see if there is
more there than you'd previously realized. I am genuinely scared about

Dude you are genuinely scared about unpastuerized milk, range fed

Blacktails and a few Elk over here on the coast, Mulies are a little
further west usually. However, the permit system is a PITA here,
lotteries and such. Back home in sweet Alabama growing up it was
something like a 'deer a day' the whitetails were (and are) so
plentiful.

We moved back there for about 9 months after g-school(wife hated it so
we came back to WA) and we couldn't keep hosta's in the yard due to the
whitetails browsing. I'm wondering if hostas and the rough in the golf

In the midatlantic area 5000 accidents a season due to deer.
I don't swerve for squirrels. I have a flock in the trees behind my house. Last
count 7. During my battle last summer with them messing with my deck garden I
dinged one right between the eyes with my slingshot. Furry little bastard shook
it off and gibbered some kind of squirrel backtalk before he took off. Every
day a herd of 6 white tail come and stand under the pine trees in my back yard
to rest. Monday I saw a red Fox walk around marking his turf. I wondered if he
was looking for a nice tender, fat squirrel to snack on?

In the midatlantic area 5000 accidents a season due to deer.
I once did an analysis of economic effects of the high modern dead
population in Wisconsin (thought to be approximately 10x what it was a
few hundred years ago). I looked at several different kinds of
economic effects (costs of depredations of farm crops, costs on
timber, hunting permit revenues, etc.). The single largest cost was
damage to automobiles, which totalled several million dollars a year
in the state. Hitting a deer head on and fast can basically total a
car. And if you hit a moose going fast, it could be vaya con dios.
They're bigger, and higher off the ground- sometimes come right
through the windshield.

Definitely don't swerve for squirrels.

did someone say communists? i thought i heard you right ... this reminds of
the times in the Old Country when my papa and i used to go to the May 1st
Parade in Minsk Central Square ... we used to carry red flags and balloons
and chanted communist slogans such as "Long Live the October Revolution",
"Our Hearts Are with Castro", and "More Milk and Kefir Production this
Harvest Year to Put American Imperialists to Shame" ...

afterwards my dad always took me out for a milk shake made with Red Cow Milk
and Muffins made with wheat and corn donated by USA ... those muffins meant
the world to me ...

now, if we only got some of that mad-cow beef from USA too and some chewing
gum ... ahhh then i would be a very content "malchik" ...

It acts as a sort of wake up call, when you see a strategy employed by
our nations leaders that was once employed by a notorious past
group of leaders for the same reason.
Oh my gosh, Nazis wanted good transportation, we want good transportation, etc.
We're doomed!!
Aren't hard line Republicans a stone's throw from facists and Democrates a
stone's throw from communists?
Republican and democrat politicians are the same thing, nowadays, for the
most part. When are you going to wake up and realize that you are just a
pawn in a game of playing one against the other, while certain entities grow
fat upon your ignorance and tax dollars while you run around waving your
conformity flag higher and higher, thinking your getting a piece of the pie
while in actuality sucking on throwaway crumbs.

You have been had.

Only so far as what Goering's boast can teach us about today's
American leadership and the gullibility of the fools who still fall
for this cynical ruse.
And by 'leadership' I am not referring to that brain-dead white trash
puppet who can barely string a sentence together, but the individuals
who pull his strings. b
Goering's
philosophy was and is a tru-ism that speaks for itself.

Your so-called 'curiosity' smells suspiciously of rank smugness. b

I-64 did not exist between Richmond and "the road south to Hatteras"

you paid a toll in the Tidewater area and drove through city streets
south of the tunnel

there was one hell of a switchback at a river crossing on the "the road
south" to the Outer Banks

Rodanthe, Salvo and Waves were three separate villages and the
speed limit between Rodanthe, Salvo and Waves changed

the Lighthouse was next to the shore

there were no buildings taller than 3 floors south of Nags Head

you could camp on the beach outside the Coast Guard station in Buxton

Hatteras Island was a dry county

a grocery store on Hatteras Island was no larger than a convenience store
on the mainland

the Sand Dollar and General Mitchell still stood

there was no escape from the midday heat in Buxton

Heh, that is the same. A few years ago I went to Ocracoke for a week,
one day it was 104...no where to hide except my unAC'd car and the
campground showers. The trees on Ocra were only like 6' high at the
camp and the mozzies had them to themselves.

There was a sandwich shop near the entrance to the lighthouse...it was
in the green mobile home...P_____ something.

when WRV was a little hole in the wall that sold boards, not fashions.

when I could get from Great Bridge to the 'banks in 45 minutes.
