[hercules-390] nOOb can't get a TSO logon screen

Running TK4_v1.00 using the mvs.bat script under Windows 10. I'm only trying to create a valid TSO world where I could create some simple COBOL programs. I have NO systems programming experience.

It goes through the IPL ok and I can attach to the HTTP server and issue commands there and see devices, etc. To the best of my understanding, MVS 3.8 is running.

In the PDF user's manual, it says:

If, for the current IPL, this is the first connection to the terminal address
selected by Hercules, a panel showing the TK4- logo and information about
Hercules and the host operating system will be displayed. In this case press
the 3270 RESET key followed by the CLEAR key to display the logon panel
(RESET is needed if the keyboard is locked only).

My wc3270 screen looks like:

David @ DAVID-LENOVO 2018-04-30 16:17:05

Hercules Version : 3.13
Host name : DAVID-LENOVO
Host OS : Windows_NT-6 2
Host Architecture : AMD64

So trying the RESET and then CLEAR combination only gives me an X WAIT that never goes away and doing a RESET and ATTN gives me nothing.

Also, the device number of 001F that's listed only corresponds in the HTTP interface to a subchannel of 001F, which is a 3705 device and not a 3270. If I try to give it a 3270 device, I don't get the above screen, but a message that that device is not available and the wc3270 screen goes away.

My wc3270 config looks like:

Session: TSO-TK4
Path: C:\Users\David\Documents\wc3270\TSO-TK4.wc3270

Options
1. Host ................... : 192.168.50.1

So can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Many thanks!

Hi David,

The logo screen shows that you are running Hercules-390 v3.13. I think somehow the wrong version of Hercules was started. TK4- MVS 3.8J is a turnkey appliance, so there is no need to download anything except the 3270 emulator.

TK4- also uses a variant of Hercules-390 V4.00, but includes support for non-standard Hercules devices, such as the 3705. So for best results, you should use the version of Hercules that comes with TK4- MVS3.8J.

I would try unzipping TK4- into the same location again, overwriting all files and sub-directories, and trying again. If successful, the Hercules logo screen should have a sleeping cat, and say TK4- Update 08, and the Hercules Version should be 4.00.

Good luck.

Mark, good "pickup" on the hercules v3.13. I didn't notice that

Hmm, weird / interesting how 3.13. might have been started.

I have tk-4, and Herc 3.13 on my Win 7 box, but running mvs.bat from
either a cmd prompt or an explorer window starts the "internal" tk-4
hercules properly.

David, how exactly did you start the 'mvs.bat' file?

Have you edited that file ? / changed anything else on the system ?

Did you by chance, install hercules 3.13 into the tk4\hercules directory ?

If not, then it's strange how 3.13 could have been started, as the
last line in mvs.bat is an "explicit" call to the local hercules
directory :

..\hercules\windows\%ARCH%\hercules %DAEMON% -f conf\tk4-.cnf >log/3033.log

I agree that it's pretty strange, but after uninstalling the version of Hercules that has an actual Windows install, the TK4- version worked correctly. Thanks for the insight!

Had you installed 3.13 in the tk-4/hercules directory?

That would be the only way I can think of that would cause 3.13 to run
instead of the tk4- custom version.

If you install 3.13 in the default location or any where else than in
the tk-4/hercules directory, there should be no problem.

You can have multiple Hercules versions installed, as long as they are
in a separate directory, and you manage the PATH env variable to run
the desired version.

Mike,
No, it was in Program Files. But it doesn't matter now. I'm happy with TK4-. ;c)
Thanks,
David

Yeah, that was the problem. I've been trying to get a local environment setup for awhile and there are a few too many ways to skin the cat for the newbie. I had tried two other methods to get a Hercules+MVS+TSO going and the mvs.bat file was firing off the wrong Hercules/MVS. Once I got those other efforts out of the way, I could use the TK4- version as outlined in the docs. Thanks for the help!

Running TK4_v1.00 using the mvs.bat script under Windows 10.
You posted to an emulator group instead to an operating system group.
I suggest that you re-post to:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/H390-MVS/info
or
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/hercules-os380/info
or
others like turnkey-mvs

Did you get the current TK4-minus, as in last download on
the web page for TK4-minus. You also need stuff at the top.
Read the web page closely to figure out the order or do as
others do and get the oldest obsolete TK4-minus.

Did you read the install manual including getting a valid
console starting on page 12?

Did you then nullify %DAEMON% mode so you don't need
a web browser but put a slash in front of consoles commands?

You connected to address 001F which is some type of console.
Attaching a second session should get a TSO terminal address.
It will probably be something like 00C0 ?

Got it worked out by uninstalling another effort to get Hercules going. That cleared up the mess. I posted here because I'd tried to connect to all the other yahoo Hercules groups but this is the only unrestricted one and none of the others have replied to my request to join the group.

Thanks for your help.

What is your 3270 terminal emulator?  Do you have a 3270 connected to local host at port 3270?

Using wc3270 because I want the built-in file transfer ability it has. Got the problem worked out by uninstalling a previous Hercules installation that was getting in the way.
Thanks for your help.
