Now that it's nap time and the January contest is no longer in doubt, it's also time for February. My nominations include one Calypso, one duet and two killer Doo-Wops.

You Made Me Love You- Sensations (1957)

Led by Yvonne Mills Baker, one of the premier female leads IMO, witness “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby” and “Let Me In. “ The instrumentation (slide trombone, tuba?) evokes a New Orleans sound.

The Flirt – Shirley & Lee (1957)

How can a record featured in a movie be obscure? I think it still qualifies because not many, if any, people will know it was on the “Cry Baby” with Johnny Depp soundtrack.

May May - Mighty Sparrow (1962)

Sparrow, born in Grenada but raised in Trinidad, is probably the most celebrated Calypsonian ever. Remember Colin Powell, Secretary Of State under George W. Bush? He was a huge Sparrow fan, and I remember when he said ”Sparrow never made a bad record.” And he has made tons of records. This is the original version of May May (aka Mae Mae).

Your Very First Love – Dubs (1963)

This one was also on a soundtrack (for an obscure TV show).
How was this gem overlooked for the contests?

No I'm not. I almost said it was an obscure movie, but Johnny Depp's and John Water's involvement might lower the level of obscurity for this film.

No, "Cry Baby" is not an obscure movie, but there are lots of obscure records that find their way into non-obscure movies. Like "White Cliffs of Dover" the Blue Jays in that "The Crying Game" movie.

Your point is that the record is no longer obscure if it was in a movie. I disagree with that. The mere presence of a song in a movie is nowhere near enough to change obscurity. Some records are only in movies for like 20 seconds, for instance. Others are well in the background and are barely noticeable.

You're misreading something. My point stated in my first post in this thread is that:

"How can a record featured in a movie be obscure? I think it still qualifies." What can be clearer than that?

I thought you were saying that the record still qualifies for the tournament, which it does. Sp you're saying that the record is still obscure even though it was in a movie?

So, I guess we agree then.

----------
Your whole argument was moot anyhow, since "obscure" in this case is
specifically defined as "not in Roger's Battles."
Plenty of records *in* those Battles were, by any other definition,
obscure. But for this tournament, they are *not* considered obscure,
even if they're some unreleased demo that never saw the light of day for
40 years.

Why not?

ALL THAT MATTERS IS WHAT'S COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKERS

I see it as at least 90% as good as the Ronettes version. Good enough that most people in 1963 would not have even noticed the difference. I already tested it on some huge Ronettes fans (BO & FC) who agreed that it was a good version of the song. If I told you that the Georgettes were actually the first group to record it, before Spector signed the Ronettes, would that make a difference to you maybe voting for it?

You'd be lying. And it wouldn't make a difference even if it were true.
Many times the first version is not the best.

Speaking of white stuff....

Since I did so well with my nominations in the January tournament, I've
decided to go a little bit off the rails for February. To put it
mildly, I am not a rockabilly fan, but there are some rockabilly records
that, for one reason or another, I like. Here are four of them.

Telephone Baby - Werly Fairburn

No, but it's not an unissued track that first came out decades later on an album. It's just an odd record that came out on an obscure label that nobody has been able to date. There's lots of those.

https://www.allmusic.com/artist/marvin-jackson-mn0001531004/biography

Marvin Jackson is a rockabilly guitar player and singer from Missouri who released a series of rare singles on his own Crestwood Records label in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Although he never enjoyed more than regional success, Jackson could be a poster boy for how rockabilly should be played and delivered. White Label Records released an LP of Jackson material in 1985, and Collector Records gathered that album, all the independent singles, and several previously unreleased tracks into one package, When You Rock and Roll, which came out in 2004.

MARVIN JACKSON
"Gee Whiz Miss Liz"
Interview by Steve Kelemen

The name Marvin Jackson may not ring many bells, but still this cat brutally carved out a distinctive style. Through his efforts, this made him stand above the never ending legion of Elvis clones that were taking over, so forcefully, the airwaves and record sales during the 1950's.

I started playing guitar when I was 14 years old. Played lead guitar mostly for other singers at school shows and local dances. My first three records were made during 1957. They were released on my own Crestwood label. The first one was "Honey If You Love Me" b/w "World Of Make Believe" followed by "My Cryin' Heart" b/w "Someday You'll Be Sorry". Both were pressed by Starday Records in Madison, Tennessee. I had 300 copies made of each record. My 3rd Crestwood single was "Peek-A-Boo" b/w "You Gotta Have The Beat". This one was pressed by King Records in Cincinnati, Ohio.

I had 200 copies made of that one. During the summer of 1958 I was drafted into the army. I completed my advanced training at Fort Hood, Texas, then went to Germany for 18 shows, etc. This was when I was stationed near Nuremberg. I was released from active duty in November 1960. I returned home and went back to work at McDonald Aircraft (where I worked before I was drafted) then the Berlin crisis broke and I was called back into the service.

During the 1950s I drove all over Arkansas, Illinois, Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee shaking DJ's hands and having them play my records. I got quite a few interviews and most of the DJ's were friendly. Austin Wood (who booked the Grand Ole Opry stars in my area) had a radio show on KTTR in Rolla, Missouri, had me on his show. I think he also had a TV show too. He was a very nice man and treated me good when he played my records and interviewed me. Most people don't know that he was blind. He died a while back.

Anyway, my records played very well locally on the radio and juke boxes. The main ones were "Jaybird", "Peek-A-Boo" and "Turn To Jesus". "Turn To Jesus" was recorded and released by Uncle Buck Lipe (Mr. Ducktail). He was a local DJ and record producer (The "Sam Phillips of Missouri", who was responsible for some of the BEST ROCKABILLY that came out of the state-S.K.).

In 1985 White Label Records released an album full of my songs. Some of the tracks were recorded that year with my band "The Rockabilly Three". I'm happy that Cees Klop put that album out. Originally Bison Bob (now Buffalo Bop) was going to release the album, but for some reason they didn't.

Nowdays I make my living as a construction worker. I am very interested in doing some of these Rockabilly shows that we talked about. I'm in good health and ready to Rock'n'Roll for all of these new Rockabilly lovers - there's no better form of music.

Gee Whiz Miss Liz - Marvin Jackson

-----------
I tried hard, but I couldn't find any definitive info on this record.
Possibly recorded in 1957, released in 1961? Possibly *not* released
till years later? Possibly *recorded* in 1961? Possibly recorded years
later and thus ineligible?
There is a page on YouTube that says it was recorded in 1958 but
released on an LP in 1985. I have seen it listed as being on Crestwood
200 but no evidence of a release date on that.

The 45 came out, here it is.
http://rcs-discography.com/rcs/show_pic.php?key=5604&type=ls
I've looked at the same site. Yes, it was pressed but can you find the
date it was issued?
No, but it's not an unissued track that first came out decades later on an album. It's just an odd record that came out on an obscure label that nobody has been able to date. There's lots of those.
-----------
But how do you know that? How do you know the 45 isn't a boot?
A boot of what?
A "boot" is an unauthorized copy of an actual real 45.
------------
Usually, but for example the Five Sharps 45 Joe P. made is referred to
as a boot, although the original only came out on a 78.
Question remains: how do you *know* the 45 depicted on the RCS website
is not a....repro? fake? mockup? conspiracy? hoax? piracy?

If you look at the YouTube video linked to by Jim you'll see that
the poster of the video is (or purports to be) Jackson himself, and
it's he that provides the 1958 recording date. I doubt that we're
going to find anything more definitive than that.

The only problem there is that I'm sure some of us here have met
enough of these old 1950's artists (especially the Southern rockabilly
types and yes,I do have one Charlie Feathers at the top of my list
here) to know to take a lot of their recollections---especially those
involving recording and release dates---with a rather large pinch of
salt

That's where I got the idea. Thanks! You (and I think Roger) liked the album, so I thought I'd

The last one not that obscure, a bit too similar to ‘Love You So’ but I much prefer it to the earlier hit.

Really surprised. Couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t in the battles.

Assumed this was a national hit because played heavily in Phoenix when I was growing up. Checked Whitburn, no top 100. Checked the ARSA survey site. 13 in San Diego, 18 in Phoenix. Top 40 ten other west coast cities. Only non west coast charting 38 in Baltimore. Produced by Bob Keane’s Donna records (LA ?) explaining its west coast exposure.

The artist should be Ron Holden & The Thunderbirds.

Okay, even though I scratch my head at the rush to nominations, and the
campaigning,
The rush is only for those who choose to avail themselves of the opportunity to prevent nominations of his or her nominated records by someone else. The benefit for the group is it presents an opportunity to verify the validity of the nominations.

The "campaigning" seems to be limited to me, though I didn't think of it as such. I was just providing what I considered interesting tidbits about my nominations. In any event, my campaigning hasn't helped me one bit based on results. :-(

Here's a weird detail. The vocalist on this record is George Kirby. He
isn't mentioned anywhere else in the Blues Discography index. According
to Wikipedia this was indeed George Kirby the comedian.

OK Di thanks for checking

BTW Tho the sport means little on this side of the pond I know how
huge basketball is over there and I know the very high status Kobe
Bryant occupied in it so I offer my sincere commiserations on the
tragic news that is across all our media this morning too

There are millions of idol worshipping others out there ro confer "redemption" status on Bryant.

If he lives long enough, Bill Cosby may have redemption conferred upon him as well, baby!!

And oh yeah.......stay out of whirlybirds!! I always hated those things!!

Cosby is making the most of his situation. He started eating healthy in jail, lost like 50 pounds, and speaks to other prisoners a few times a week about how to get their lives back together after they get out.

See, there's the difference between guys like them and Kobe Bryant.
Bryant committed a crime 17 years ago and stayed out of trouble ever
since. No army of women came forward to say "Me too!" after the first
accuser. I'm willing to believe he changed his ways.

When celebrities die young, the media tends to turn them into gods, and
I don't like that either. I'll give you that.

The media and its targeted slurpers not only erroneously deify but demonize as well. Which they did repeatedly and without remorse to Bryant's humiliated and mutilated victim.
His legacy is now as a sancified role model and exemplary family man.
May he rest in pieces.

Advice from a convicted imprisoned sex offender is just what those prisoners need! I wonder if he makes himself a model to which they can aspire.

This track is one of my favorites. It passed through my mind a time or
two to nominate it but then thought how this style of music doesn't
always hit some of the voters in the right place, I have passed. It
will be interesting to me to see how it does.
