Discussion:
Anthologies: two questions
(too old to reply)

I've been told many times that there are times in the publishing
business when an anthology of short stories will sell, and other
times when it won't, and that the market shifts from one state to
the other and back according to the whim of the gods or something.

So, first question: is there anyone here who is currently
selling/submitting/otherwise in touch with book editors and can tell
me, is this one of the times when anthologies of miscellaneous short
stories of the fantasy persuasion sell?

No, I thought not.

(I'm going to email my agent with the same question, but I expect
him to say, "No, it's not steam-engine time.)

So, I've just about finished re-keying all the short stories I
sold to Marion Zimmer Bradley's magazine and her themed
anthologies during the 1980s and 1990s, and I plan to put them on
my website with the rest of the stuff there.

So, second question: it's going to need some kind of title. Any
suggestions? (If nobody has any, I'll just call it "Stories" and
the heck with it.) Note that AFAIK nobody on this group will
have read any of them.

*snerk*

Anyway, most of the stories were originally published under my
own name. I did submit some stories by "Blake" in order to be
able to submit more than one story per year to MZBFM. That's
what Randall Garrett used to do: used many different pseuds so he
could sell many different stories to the same magazine.

What I'm going to use for a "cover" is a problem for sometime in
the future. I still have to input three stories, and the finger
I banged up last Friday (cf. long discussions between Lynn and me
about things we've done to hurt ourselves) won't let me type more
than a couple pages at a time.

Well, I don't, but I suppose I'd better. I was going

Gracious goodness, I don't recall that post at all. However, having
seen it, I must correct myself; my husband's name is not Dutch but
German, specifically Prussian, and his great-grandfather was a
draft dodger who came to the US to avoid having to fight in the
Franco-Prussian War. So, in fine, the name is German and is
pronounced as in German, to rhyme with English 'light'.

No, I think not, because (vide supra) that's not how it's

Nope, and I'm not going to, because I already used _The Interior
Life_ and got reports of people filing it with the self-help
books .... which considering its stupid cover, has got to win at
least local and regional stupidity awards.

So what about "View from a Heydt"? I'm sure Isaac would approve.
Only if I were putting out a book of essays, than which few
things are less likely. (I have posted some essays on these
groups, very occasionally, mostly on Dante, but certainly not
enough for a book.)
Could you blow your own trumpet?
Not only no, but Hell No.

From a Great Height. Short Stories by Dorothy Heydt.
Absolutely impossible. Ask anybody who's known me for a few
decades.
(On the other hand, I had three more stories to input: two down,
one to go.)
You could always just give up on any such project. "I don't care
what happens to these people." <GD&RAVVVF>
Don't tempt me. They're all inputted now, but I'm proofing now
and finding enough typoes to make me blush. (Probably because
one finger is still not quite working.)
When I type something in I usually find about 25% errors. I never
could type.
But I learned to type *properly* in 1955 (sophomore year of high
school). I made my living typing, on and off, for thirty or
forty years. It is exasperating that one lousy finger is making
me make so many mistakes.

Nope, and I'm not going to, because I already used _The Interior

What??
Reference to Marvel character The Silver Surfer, who was Galactus'
herald. He got to tell the population of planets that they were going to
be eaten by Galactus shortly, which made him sad. Poor sad Norrin Radd.

Cheers - Jaimie

I know a good many heralds, but they're not on USENET.

"Oh, we are the SCA heraldic team;
We all have loud mouths and we wear gold and green.
We sell strange devices at reasonable prices,
And we'll tell you just what they mean,

For ... we ... know ...

Red is for purity, white is for blood,
And lions and roses are common as mud,
And unicorns vairy can only be carried
By those who survived the Great Flood."

And several other verses, some not particularly SFW.

/bonk

I've never lived in the Hashbury, but I had a really pungent
nightmare set there once. I was in a house full of monsters who
hadn't noticed me yet, and if I could only get out of the house
and into the Panhandle*, I would be safe. I forget whether I
made it, or whether I woke up first.

_____
*For those unfamiliar with San Francisco geography, it's a long
strip of parkland, one block wide and umpteen blocks long, within
easy walking distance of the Hashbury.

I actually recognize the name, but have forgotten (if I ever
knew) what it was about. No, don't remind me.

Moving right along, I have another question. The MS. is almost
ready to send to my agent, and he said he'd like it in MS Word
format. So I looked at the Word options that OpenOffice is willing
to "Save As," and I got

Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)
Microsoft Word 95 (.doc)
Microsoft Word 6.0 (.doc)
Microsoft word 2003 XML (.xml)

I asked him which version he wanted, and he said, "Whichever is
newest. I recently upgraded and am not sure which is most
effective.""

Now, the last time I used MS Word it was version 2.0. Which, of
the above options, is the newest?

If you have an anywhere close to modern version of openoffice/libreoffice, it should
provide the option:

Microsoft Word 2007/2010/2013 XML (.docx)

This is probably the best choice to use.

Otherwise, you can always save it as rich text (rtf) which MS tools generally
understand.

I was going to say "2003" but that's "XML" which
is different. So, yeah.

If or in case 97/2000 doesn't work, try "Rich Text Format",
unless someone is about to say don't.

You don't remember the Hite Report? Sherry "Used terrible data for her work"
Hite?
We let companies reporting satisfaction with cosmetics

Ms Hite.

I'd heard of The Kinsey Report. So had she.

Did you use _The Inner Heydt_ already?
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Inner_Light>
(disambiguation)
Nope, and I'm not going to, because I already used _The Interior
Life_ and got reports of people filing it with the self-help
books .... which considering its stupid cover, has got to win at
least local and regional stupidity awards.
The Heydt of Fantasy?
Dave, may keep trying
Oh, don't let me stop you; but I've already inputted "Stories You
Never Heard Of" on the title page. Finished re-keying last
night, now time for rereading and rerereading and hoping to catch
the last stupid typo, which of course I won't.

So, second question: it's going to need some kind of title.  Any
suggestions?  (If nobody has any, I'll just call it "Stories" and
the heck with it.)  Note that AFAIK nobody on this group will
have read any of them.
One tradition is to use the name of one of the stories; best, most famous, favorite; with or without "and Other Stories." If you don't have a particular story title in mind, the best alternative I can come up with is _Famous Rock Stars I Have Known -- Which Is None of Them: Odds Are, Any Pop Song You Could Name, I Haven't Heard or Heard of, Much Less Know Who Sang It_ which has a certain lilt, but probably doesn't convey the feeling of your stories.

Best of luck.

Trouble is, as I said upthread, nobody except elderly MZB fans
are going to have heard of, let alone read, any of these stories.
So the title of any of them is going to mean absolutely zilch to
any possible reader.

Gosh, that takes me back to the sixties, when stories had long,
involved, weird titles. Mostly by Harlan Ellison.

"Rediscovered Tales"...?

I loved the title of the 70s SF magazine that published only
first sales, including some choice reprinted firsts by authors
who went on to be "names":

Unearth.

Some decent careers started there.

Well, I heard back from my agent, who said,

"Hmmm, short stories - well, yours seem to have pedigree, so I can
give it a shot. If we fail, then go to plan B."

So I'm typing like mad, getting it all together, and I'll send
it to him under the provisional title "Stories You've Never Even
Heard Of._ He can change it to whatever he likes.

I'll report back when/if anything happens.

Nah.

I'm putting _Stories You Never Heard Of_ on the title page and he
can change it if he wants. I don't know what's his Plan B; mine
is my webpage, so it'll get out there eventually.

I'd go with a title like that. There's a YouTube Channel called "Extra Credits" which has a series of videos called, "Games You Might Not Have Played" and it talks about a bunch of indie/hole-in-the-wall games that haven't received a lot of attention over the years.

For Gallagher, you needed a raincoat.

For Jesus Christ "G G " Allin you needed a Hazmat suit. :)

I went to punk and New Wave shows (Dead Kennedys, Ramones,
Oingo Boingo (whence came Danny Elfman), DEVO - Mark Mothersbaugh
and company wore the Hazmat suits when they performed.

Working in a downtown bookstore in the mid-80s to early 90s,
in walking distance of the favorite hotel for touring bands
playing the local venues that would host shows, I encountered
numerous famous musicians. David Crosby came in once and
complemented the staff on what a nice store we had as he was
checking out. Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes (no relation)
bought a stack of poetry, including remainders, and was very
pleased at snagging some hardcovers at bargain prices. I
also ushered shows at a local theater, which put me in proximity
to some "names," though bothering them was not cool, man!
Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders passed me in the lobby once.
Tiny woman, big voice.

So, I've just about finished re-keying all the short stories I
sold to Marion Zimmer Bradley's magazine and her themed
anthologies during the 1980s and 1990s, and I plan to put them on

Well, if that's the case, you've seen all the Cynthia stories
(but those are already online as _The Witch of Syracuse_), and at
least two Valmai stories. Unless you also read MZBFM (which ran
for about 40 issues before running out of money and going under),
you've missed the Mathali stories and the other Valmai stories
and three or four one-offs.

Well, I've already sent it in under the title _Stories You've
Never Heard Of._ IMO any kind of wordplay on the name "Heydt" is
going to get the deer-in-the-headlights response, because my name
is known to a cherished few. We calculated once that there were
probably 42 of them.
