These messages always make me think of the public toilet graffiti

This is a newsgroup that has nothing to do with apps and whatsapp.
Actually, it's possible that the person who started this thread is
still reading it. But we don't know, because we've never heard back
from him/her. Nor have we heard from any of the posters who wanted to
be added, so we don't know whether the attempts succeeded.
Doesn't look like any of the drop-in posters actually read the thread
before they post to it.

It is a curious phenomenon.
The OP in this thread <***@gmail.com> appears to have made no
other posts to this newsgroup before or since that one last November,
and the same is true of the few 'applicants' I've bothered to look up
[1] apart from one, who responded to a humorous reply.
It would be polite for the OP to acknowledge responses to their
invitation - and to recognise that they are using this newsgroup for
something which other users might object to.
How the applicants find this group and thread in order to post their
applications, I don't know. Perhaps it is just some by-product of web
searches, or the result of messages posted to public places such as
'Facebook' or 'Twitter' which internet beginners might stumble upon
willy nilly.
As far as I can tell without becoming a user, the only way for any
WhatsApp user to add another to their contacts is to do it manually (by
adding the mobile phone number to their own 'contacts' or 'favorites').
The phone numbers are used by the WhatsApp system as unique user
identifiers in a database of WhatsApp users who can exchange messages
via the WhatsApp servers - ie not making mobile phone calls or sending
SMS or MMS messages.
There doesn't seem to be a public 'broadcast' or 'invitation' facility
in WhatsApp - or if there is it isn't made known to non-users (nor it
seems to new users). As WhatsApp is owned by Facebook there should be
some sort of integration between those services.
[1] using Google Groups there's an icon next to each article, which if
you hover the mouse pointer over it pops up a box saying 'More message
actions'; clicking the icon produces a menu one of whose options is
'Show activity' which produces a new page showing the Google Groups
activity recorded for that email address in the current group.
