Over the past year why has the UK scared doctors and nurses from EU
countries into going back home? We need them now.

Why did we encourage foreign low-paid workers to go back home? Workers
such as farm labourers, delivery drivers, supermarket assistants, care
home workers, nursery assistants, food factory workers, etc.

The answer is Brexit. Those EU countries must be thanking Britain as they
saw doctors coming back and now ready to help with coronavirus.

Combined with under investment in the NHS, the UK has never been in worse
place to deal with a coronavirus crisis.

What did we do to scare them exactly? Wait until they left work and jumped out

If those countries are so great to begin with, why did they leave? Most of the
foreign NHS staff I meet are from shithole countries outside the EU. They're
not going back any time soon.

"More than 10,000 EU nationals have left the NHS since the Brexit
referendum, including almost 5,000 nurses. These new figures will add
fuel to concerns about a wider staffing crisis."

We made foreign workers (not just in health) leave by creating a climate
of fear and uncertainty about their future prospects to remain in this
country. Now, at a time of epidemic, we see how truly short sighted that
was although I don't expect Brexiteers to admit it, as they've failed to
admit every other shortcoming of Brexit.

We need foreign labour right now. Will native Brits go into farms and
fields to pick crops? We've lost foreign hospital cleaners, care
assistants, delivery drivers, etc which we need right this minute -- and I
don't see Brits surging forward to fill the gap. What an own goal.

Stop worrying about how bad it is in other countries and worry about how
bad it has become here at a time of need.

Survey after survey shows patient satisfaction with the NHS is at an all
time low. The number of British hospital beds have been halved over the
last 30 years and is now the lowest in Europe. We need acute beds right
now and it's so bad we're converting exhibition centres into field
hospitals.

Our hospital staff are worn out already because of the required workload
to make up for departed staff.

Why? With millions being laid off, I expect there are many who would
willingly transfer to an essential job, even if it is just driving a van full
of supplies to a hospital.

Why not?

If it is a choice between going hungry and having nothing to do, I’m sure
millions would prefer to earn money picking strawberries, or whatever.

Isn’t that simply logic? We are expecting a large number of people who are
currently healthy (or relatively so) to fall ill.

In normal times we do not.

Doesn’t it make sense to have temporary hospitals at the ready for this
projected onslaught?

The loss of skilled and unskilled foreign labour on account of Brexit was
predicted and debated a long time ago. There were plenty of warnings that we
would lose staff providing essential services, but the avidly pro-Brexit
response was Brits would soon fill those jobs especially if wages went up.

We left ourselves vulnerable. Then coronavirus came.

Well if we will not address the AGW problem, then nature will do it for us -

I heard that put slightly differently by an virologist who said the
coronavirus is actually very weak and can not survive without us. If we
don't provide a new host for it within days then it dies.

Will native Brits go into farms and
fields to pick crops? We've lost foreign hospital cleaners, care
assistants, delivery drivers, etc which we need right this minute -- and I
don't see Brits surging forward to fill the gap. What an own goal.
Unemployment has dropped. Obviously someone has been filling the gap if we
have apparently scared away all those foreign workers.

The answer is Brexit. Those EU countries must be thanking Britain as
they saw doctors coming back and now ready to help with coronavirus.
If those countries are so great to begin with, why did they leave? Most
of the foreign NHS staff I meet are from shithole countries outside the
EU. They're not going back any time soon.
Stop worrying about how bad it is in other countries and worry about how
bad it has become here at a time of need.

Combined with under investment in the NHS, the UK has never been in
worse place to deal with a coronavirus crisis.
The NHS has more cash right now than it has ever had.
Survey after survey shows patient satisfaction with the NHS is at an all
time low. The number of British hospital beds have been halved over the
last 30 years and is now the lowest in Europe. We need acute beds right
now and it's so bad we're converting exhibition centres into field
hospitals.
Indeed, those "acute" beds are a problem but you can't blame that on "Brexit".

The problem at the moment is not a shortage of doctors and nurses. It is
the shortage of beds and ventilators (and people trained to operate the
ventilators).

We won't cure more people by drafting more doctors and nurses into the
hospitals. They will simply add to the audience that watches an elderly
person drown in his own lung secretions, gasping in panic for breath,
unable to benefit from any medication offered to him. Followed by the
next patient, and the next.

There is such a shortage of doctors and nurses that the UK government
appealed for them to come out of retirement to help with the emerging
crisis.

It may have been lost in translation but I recall hearing a worrying
percentage of doctors treating patients in Bergamo Italy became infected
with coronavirus.

This puts me in mind of this article:
http://on.theatln.tc/6rBcxsl?fbclid=IwAR1P_WTKEmd_GYFiRG4hgmpMdwE6yuETb5322lLnKyk8OSkEK9Jf7JCESGE

TDLR - article talks of the danger of medics walking out during pandemic
(which apparently happened during an Ebola outbreak) if they feel
they're not being given adequate protection, the author also makes
comments about lack of preparation for this sort of event in the US,
including lack of protective equipment. I have heard reports of
complaints about lack of protection in the UK too.

Regards,
James
What was Ebola's mortality rate 50%? The mortality rate of SARS-CoV-2 < 1%.

Contemptible cowardice!

Those EU countries must be thanking Britain as
they saw doctors coming back and now ready to help with coronavirus.
Combined with under investment in the NHS, the UK has never been in
worse place to deal with a coronavirus crisis.

What can I say? I'm a typical Tory voter.
