He's on Facebook. And damn he's still an awesome vocalist.

I wish I'd looked before I leaped, I didn't know it was so deep
Been down so far I don't get wet, I haven't touched the bottom yet
This river scene is getting old, I'm hungry, sleepy, wet and cold
She told me to forget it nice, I should have taken her advice
I only want to go on home! I'd gladly leave that girl alone
What a way to spend the night, if I don't drown I'll die of fright
My pappy taught me how to float, but I can't swim a single note
He threw me in to teach me how, I stayed there floating like a momma cow
And now I floated way down stream, I know this has to be a dream!
If I could find my way to shore, I'd never never do this any more
They give you three, I've been nine!
I'm going down just one more time, going down! Going down! Going down!

-- The awesome Micky-Dolenz :) They did his song "Going Down" on Breaking
Bad which I need to watch. "I can't swim a single note." Awesome.

It's Maynard *James* Keenan. No relation to Pepper Keenan.

LOL. It's that voice that made Rose the one-time superstar. Welcome

True, he's one hell of a lot better. Dolenz continues to do stage
shows, acting as well as singing and playing. He's been at it what
looks like 60 years and he's still very much up there with the best.

"The Monkeys" was a band that was put together by the television network
from actually five performers who had solid histories of public exposure
and yet had not worked together previously.

That the atheist shittard thinks they were some kind of joke is merely
more of your idiot atheist trolling. That Dolenz was a star prior to
and after the television series ended is something even rightards accept.

I didn't know that. :) I should look in to all of their careers.

Shaun Cassidy who played "Keith" in The Partridge Family also managed
to continue on after the series, but also Cassidy actually did the vocals
for the sound tracks even though the rest of the "family" faked it.

Heavy metal is a sub genre of rock. Rock and roll is a sub genre of rock.
The Beatles created rock music with Rubber Soul and Revolver. Their sound
changed for the better, and they started taking drugs and kicking ass. I
agree that their early stuff was rock and roll.

Oooops. it was David.

Shaun played one of the Hardy Boys with Parker Stevenson. And then went
on to create some seriously weird shows, the best of which was "American
Gothic" (HIGHLY recommended if you've never seen it! Gary Cole is
awesome). He also did "Roar" which was a summer show on Fox back on 1997
and which starred a 19-year old Heath Ledger.

I took my then 9-year old 1/2 sister (who's 17 years younger than me)
to a Shaun Cassidy concert the night of the day I smoked my last
cigarette. I knew after I survived that night (Shaun was fine, but his
opening act was beyond appalling) I could survive anything without a
cigarette. I was right.

He's on Facebook. And damn he's still an awesome vocalist.
He's certainly no Phil Anselmo or the guy from Tool.
True, he's one hell of a lot better. Dolenz continues to do stage
shows, acting as well as singing and playing. He's been at it what
looks like 60 years and he's still very much up there with the best.
The Monkeys were a joke band, a manufactured pop group. They have no
integrity. They're no better than the Backstreet Boys or N'Sync.
Shows how little the atheist moron knows about American music.
The Monkeys weren't a manufactured pop band?
"The Monkeys" was a band that was put together by the television network
from actually five performers who had solid histories of public exposure
and yet had not worked together previously.
Wrong.
There is no such band called The Monkeys.
I refuse to use their retarded spelling, which was yet ANOTHER ripoff of the
Beatles. The least talented Beatle, Ringo, had more talent in one finger
than the entire Monkeys had in their entire band.

That the atheist shittard thinks they were some kind of joke is merely
more of your idiot atheist trolling. That Dolenz was a star prior to
and after the television series ended is something even rightards accept.
They were a joke. And they always will be a joke. Why listen to that shit
when you can listen to real music like Pantera, Down, Tool, and the Beatles?

happy. Assholes like you think that they have the key to what is
musically acceptable and look down on people who listen to music
outside of their specific genre. You can always tell these type of
people because they spout off shit like "if you only read the books I
have read" or "I can't believe you listen to country music". People
like you like to spout out obscure bands like Pantera and imply that
you are nothing unless you listen to Pantera "over any of that pop

Even Blues? Even Jazz?

I remember when the Motown label was cranking out ambums that were
making the "white" charts which pissed the ever-loving fuck out of
white Christian adult males. :)

I remember first coming across this idea, supported in abundant
detail, in a 1961 article in _Variety_ on the growth of rock music. At
that time, the market for singles (at that time, the main market
outlet) had an age range of 7 to 15, putting the median at 11; the
market has matured somewhat over the past half century. One rather
amusing aspect of that demographic was all of the one- or two-hit
wonders who became has-beens by age 14 back then: when their voices
changed, their fans could no longer identify with them.
For those who may never have seen _Variety_ except in old movies, it
was a paper covering the _business_ of entertainment. It had little
interest in the cultural aspect of that entertainment.
I still think Motown labels were different, they appealed to a much
broader demographic. Diananna Ross, Smokey Robinson, and fucking-A,
Dusty Springfield!

And Aretha Franklin? Berry Gordy gave her a real paying wage for her
work and got her signed to the Motown label which opened up the
broad distribution of her work that was otherwise denied to her and
the larger Negro performer genra that was possible at the time. Her
singles appealed to broad spectrums, across racial divides.

It wasn't all 11-year-olds. :)

His stint with the Monkees came after replacing Jefferson

Still, the pairing was very odd; Nirvana would have had to open

Dokken is, in my mind, precisely the crap that Nirvana flushed down the
toilet. Seems to happen early in every new decade since the birth of
Rock 'n' Roll. The early promise of the Fifties stultified into that
Jan & Dean pablum in the early 60s, and the Beatles came around to show
them how its done. Led Zeppelin made the early 70s very heavy indeed
until later even the Stones where using a disco groove. Punk and New
Wave brought things back to basics, but this degenerated into sterile
synth-pop and hair metal. Grunge was the shit until Kurt Nobrain died,
then it was just grunge knockoffs (Matchbox 20) and your boy bands, and
pop music has been a wasteland of sameness every since. Compare any
tune from 2000 (Cher), 2007 (Black Eyed Peas), and 2012 (Lady Gaga).

Still, the pairing was very odd; Nirvana would have had to open
for N'Sync for a true comparison...
I'm not sure about the "wasteland". Yes, I get the same
impression myself, but I have a niggling suspicion that we may be
too close to it, that we do not see the trees for the forest. By
way of comparison, consider the 60's: all those new acts being
released onto the public ears week in week out, maybe cracking
the Top 100 or even the Top 40 ... and where are they all now?
Who now knows their name? I suspect that if we were to look at
the overall figures, we'd find that the good stuff, the genuinely
original and influential songs and acts, were as rare in decades
past as they are now. If we were to have this conversation in
2042 or 2052, we'd both have a shortlist of names that have
stayed the course and proven their quality but that we now cannot
even bother to pick up on among all that bubblegum noise.

The other thing, of course, is external influences. Rock and
Heavy Metal only came about because British audiences and
musicians were exposed to the Blues, and we then returned the
compliment. Electronic music started in France and Germany and
then infected the rest of us. So perhaps what is needed is some
outside musical fashion that for some unfathomable reason goes
nuclear and changes everything. K-Pop, maybe, or Tuvan
throat-singing?

The Monkeys were a joke band, a manufactured pop group. They have no
integrity. They're no better than the Backstreet Boys or N'Sync.

Integrity isn't an issue. Everyone was in on the joke except you, Zach.
Maybe he's thinking of the fake "boy bands" like Menudo where none
of the little quasi-homosexual boys actually performed.
I figure the Monkees can't have been that bad if they managed to
get Jimi Hendrix <we're not worthy, we're not worthy> to open for
them on tour...
I saw that. :) I have the photograph of Hendrix in the hotel room
with the band, him sitting on the bed with his guitar. How awesome
was that?!

No sign of the dope they were all smoking. :)

More weird than awesome.

Awesome would have been Jimi and Janis, together.

They must have been smoking like chimneys, the lot of them.
There's no other way to survive such a trip....
