I have a 37" Westinghouse HD LDC (up to 1080p). I was looking at getting an
Xbox (the older model). Does it have the capability to display at 16:9? I've
looked at the back of some of the video games and they seem to vary on HD
from 480p to 720p and a couple of 1080i's.

Yes, it can. Just not in HD.

720p is HD
True HD output. The XBox console can display in those resolutions, but the
outputting graphics themselves are not HD.

Not true, some Xbox games support true HD output in 720p and rarely even
1080i. The first Xbox is just not powerful enough to render more complex
graphics in 720p or 1080i so many games, especially newer games don't
support HD resolutions.

Without the HD input, the weather effects on the Tiger Woods games
really come out poorly. You can't really tell the difference between a
heavy or light rain. We sure could use some rain right now though, it'd
be nice. Good time for rain.

yep it will support widescreen. Most of the later games are at least 480p
(and they look fine stretched) and some of the games are 720p. So few games
are 1080i, that you really can't even count that.

Thanks everyone. I guess I will go to the local game exchange today and get
one. I don't really see a need to blow major cash on a 360. The older one
seems to have allot of games already. And I'm way past keeping up with video
game systems. It took me this long to get a hd tv and a media center pc
setup.

Whoa.

1. The original XBox doesn't work with Media Center. The 360 does.

2. The XBox does NOT offer the same HD resolution as the 360. There's a HUGE
difference between the two. The XBox can display in those resolutions. It
can NOT output in the same resolutions as the 360, not even close.

I don't care if it does or doesn't work with media center. That isn't a
selling feature for me.

You probably don't realize it, but you are part of the most important gaming
demographic out there. Your decision to not spend money on a 360 is one that
other gamers will take and avoid the 360, the Wii AND the PS3.

Thank you for that.

I doubt that. I'm 39 years old. And the fact that I choose to purchase an
older video game unit will have little or no effect on the choices of the
current target group.

You're making the same stupid assumption that only kids and teens play
console systems that some industy people think.

The 360 costs less than a graphics card, and allows me to play certain games
I couldn't play with my current setup -- such as Bioshock. And by that, I
mean with all the proper graphic options turned on.

Furthermore, Microsoft doesn't support the XBox 1 anymore. There's no new
first party software, nor any new flagship titles due for the XBox. Most
importantly, the best XBLA games will be for the 360.

And the backwards compat list is large enough now that most of the must-have
Xbox titles work on the 360.

I don't know what you think you're going to get with the old XBox, but it's
not much.

He's getting a system with an extensive catalog of games that continues to
get new games released each week. And he'll get it for pretty cheap. It's
not a dead console.

Like what, Cabella's Anchorage Adventure?

Assassin's Creed's been confirmed NOT for the Xbox or PS2.

click previous and next weeks. Go forwards or backwards as far as you like.
Scarface, TW2k2, MK: armagedden, Avatar, The Legend of Spyro. All released
just this week.

Again, it's not a dead console. Don't act like it is.

I've looked at the back of some of the video games and they seem to vary on
HD from 480p to 720p and a couple of 1080i's.
First Person Shooters: Halo/Halo2 (do the original first -- much better
story line)
RPG: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 (again, the first one had
a better story, the 2nd one had some cooler light-saber/item features)

2-to-4 player fun: Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes, Fuzion Frenzy

Turn-based military strategy (like Risk, Axis&Allies but much, much better):
Dai Senryaku

Chessmaster is very cool too if you're into chess.

Enjoy the old box, I still am (going thru Mercenaries now).
