Hamilton did 1:32.764 on the last lap, with 29-lap old hard tyres.

Vettel did 1:32.740 on the same lap, only 24 thousands of a second
quicker, with brand new soft tyres.

I'll just let that sink in for a moment. —

But meanwhile, why does Hamilton always make like
he is having to achieve against such big adversity?
Why go for FL, if he is truly worried about finishing?

I might add that if there is so much pace left in the car why is
Leclerc able to get within a second of Bottas in the closing laps.
Defending second place is a damn sight more important than fastest lap.

Apparently Bottas' car had some issue. Can't find an English language
link, but:
https://www.mtvuutiset.fi/artikkeli/valtteri-bottas-joutui-dramaattisen-tilanteen-keskelle-ranskan-gp-ssa-ongelmien-syy-paljastui/7458474

"- Valtterin moottorissa oli häiriö, joka aiheutti meille päänsärkyä,
Wolff kertoi Crash.net:n mukaan.

- Se iski aika myöhäisessä vaiheessa kisaa. Se taisi olla kuutta tai
seitsemää kierrosta ennen loppua. Yritimme korjata sitä, mikä myös
osaltaan onnistui ja pystyimme kontrolloimaan tilannetta, Wolff
jatkoi."

Translated:
"- Vatteri's motor had an issue that caused us headache, Wolff told
according to Crash.net.

- It hit at a late phase of the race. I think it was six or seven leps
before the end. We tried to fix it, with partial success, so we could
control the situation, Wolff continued."

Well he didn't say he was 'worried' rather he was slightly nervous:

"LH: I asked if anyone else was having blistering and they didn’t reply
that Valtteri or anyone else was having the same, so I was a little bit
nervous with that. Particularly as it started getting quite deep on
the right side. And then it appeared on the left side, and I’m thinking:
shoot. I remember last year Lance, I think it was, so in the Williams I
guess had the tyre blow up in Turn 10, so I was a little bit nervous for
that. Even though I think we had the thin gauge tyre last year as well.
A little bit nervous with that. I basically reduced a bit of my speed
for a period of time where I wasn’t really leaning too heavily on the
front tyre. And then, right at the end, the car’s at its lightest, and
it’s only one lap, so I went for it and pushed a little bit more – but
not really taking the cake. Fortunately it all held together and I just
a little bit off. So we could definitely have had the fastest lap at the
end there but anyways."

It used to be there were few reporters.
Now, we have so many, and the drivers are asked to
do repeated interviews, covering the same subject.

So, yeah, slightly different versions emerge, and
many have valid basis.

Meanwhile Brian, where do you now find the data

Meanwhile Brian, where do you now find the data
on number of passes per race?
I don't pay much attention to it now, but Forix generate their own
lapchart based on the FIA data, which shows all 'valid' overtakes and
also provide the total number at each event. I haven't looked for the
same data anywhere else.

2019 so far (2018 totals):

AUS 10 (5)
BHR 54 (46)
CHN 34 (46)
AZB 50 (50)
ESP 21 (11)
MON 2 (6)
CDN 28 (11)
FRA 25 (48)
------- ----
224 (223)

I should note that their lapchart also highlights laps where any car was
within 1s of the car in front, so it's possible to see if an overtake
might have been made with DRS assist.

They are very colourful charts.

Well I do not understand all that talk about Ferrari having the
most power at all.
It was pretty clear that Mercedes has the best most powerful and most
efficient PU exactly as it had for the last xx years.
Maybe people like to talk a some excitement into F1 that isn't really there.

What Hamilton says, take that with a bag of salt. 40 Honda HP ago
he said that Honda was only 10 HP down on Merc, yeah right!
If Ham doesn't have a package in which he can win on cruise control
he is getting nervous and start complaining, that is how insecure
he is.

HP is useful for overtaking and quali, but if you don't have fuel efficiency then you can't use it throughout the race. The Merc PU is extremely fuel efficient.

I already covered that and IF a PU has the most HP is probably is the
most efficient PU too.
The max power is likely delivered at max -allowed- fuel flow
(disregarding oil and/or coolant tricks).
Although Honda made huge improvements since they hire non Japanese
companies to solve their problems :-) they are nowhere near Merc
as far as I can tel from my armchair.

So you don't like HAM and you don't like Honda, but Honda are improved
by the hiring of non-Japanese companies.

Anybody see a bit of a tendency developing here ?

By all means feel free to express yourself and tell us what tendency
you think you see and how that is relevant to F1.
