Hi,

As per Somit's last message, MVS 3.8J does not
support DB2.

What needs to be done in order to run DB2 on
Hercules?

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance,
Imtiaz

we-ell.... if you can obtain and apply enough PTFs to bring MVS 3.8
to a level that satisfies db2 requirements, that would be a first
step. then you need to obtain the db2 installation tapes and install
db2.

Hercules already has the ability to run db2 on the condition that
the guest OS can support db2.

Hi Darth,

Thanks for the info. I am a relative newbie in
Hercules. Where can I obtain PTFs to bring MVS
3.8 to a level where it satisfies db2
requirements?

Secondly, where would I get db2 install tapes?
IBM???

Thirdly, which guest OS would support DB2 and
where can i get them?

Thanks in advance,
Imtiaz

As MVS3.8J is unsupported I expect you have almost all
the availabel PTF's, or at least they are on the turnkey..

Yes.

according to

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/db2/index.html

DB2 is supported on a wide range of OS's.

If you are talking about classical mainframe OS's the
IBM is the only place to go for current versions
but so far they have declined to license them on
Hercules.

Notes:-

Before discussing this further please research the archives
on groups.yahoo.com. Basically I don't believe that any one
outside IBM has obtained licenses for a current OS or DB2
on Hercules.

As usual your milage may vary depending on which country you
are in. For further discussion PLEASE move to the hercules-advocacy
group.

Quite so. What is the particular need for running DB2 on MVS under Hercules? Why
not just run it straight on Linux? I have in the past received 2-3 CD copies
of DB2 for Linux (limited to 5 users or so) - it also used to be available for
download.

The last I checked, IBM allowed DB2 download
for a trial. Packages were available for several
operating systems, but not MVS 3.8j. I have
never seen or heard of DB2 for MVS 3.8j and
doubt that it ever existed.

If IBM doesn't allow down loads anymore or
you can't match a down load with an operating
system that you can run under Hercules, you
can ask IBM for a product trial. They may or
may not send the software.

My memory may be failing me, but I don't think DB2 EVER ran on
a version of MVS prior to MVS/XA, which isn't generally available
to be run under Hercules. Then you would have to find a version
of DB2 that is old enough to run under that version of the OS.

If your goal is to learn DB2 and you don't want to spend money on
software, you can easily get a copy that will run under Windows or
Unix.

If you are determined to run DB2 in a mainframe environemnt then
check with IBM. They used to have a program called something like
"Program World for Developers", designed for ISVs who were developing
new software for the environment. It's not cheap (used to be approx.
$500/mo.), but you got access to licensed, supported hardware and
software, a real customer number, etc. And it was a LOT cheaper
than purchasing a mainframe and licensing individual components.

I find in my old book that DB-2 V1R3 can run on MVS/SP VER 1 Rel.3.6
and require DFP and TSO/E

Hi there

We have tried to get information from IBM as to their plans with their
"Partner In Development" program is called. It is possible to be a
member and get all the mainframe software for development purposes for
a relative small amount of money. The problem is that IBM insists that
you have to license the FlexEs emulator and buy IBM hardware, which
amounts to some 38.000,- CHF (approximately 30.000,- $)
If however you are prepared to cough up with that kind of money you do
get the latest versions of all the MF software: zOS, DB2 V7, IMS V7
CICS MQ Series etc etc.

We are trying to persuade IBM that they should make the software more
available to "small-timers" and developers, if they want to ensure
that there is a next generation of mainframe people to keep the
systems alive. I.e. as developer you can get all the tools you need
from other vendors for far less money. We are trying to persuade IBM
that they are in the process of making the same mistake as they did
with their OS/2, where they lost to the competition (Gates and Co.)
So far without result: IBM insists that you buy the FlexEs, and get
ripped off.

Cheers
Allan

This problem has been fixed. Basically, it occurs on linux when the disk file resides on a fat partition. You can get a current snapshot at http://www.bsp-gmbh.com/hercules/snapshots/#snapshots
An alternative is to use shadow files on a non-fat partition but that means that any updates you do on the linux side will not be available on the windows side.

linux does not support ftruncate to increase to size of a file on a fat partition. There is (was) code to just write stuff at the end of the file until the file was the right size. Unfortunately, someone changed a variable from signed to unsigned (probably to get rid of some compiler warning) but the code was depending on the variable to go negative.

Current code does not use ftruncate (or the fat write kludge) when new space is allocated at the end of the file ... that space just simply gets allocated when the write occurs.
