Post by FPPPost by Jeanne DouglasPost by Governor SwillPost by FPPWe'll never know how many deaths were prevented by things like
background checks and waiting periods.
Thus my willingness to support waiting periods. At the very least in
turns a crime of passion into premeditation which carries a longer
sentence.
Really?
It's really annoying when somebody responds but cuts the group list so
the poster they've replied to doesn't have the chance to respond back.
It's an old trick some posters use to make themselves look good. "See,
he didn't respond to me. He's given up on the discussion. I WIN!"
Post by FPPPost by Jeanne DouglasSo tell me, how many innocent people are you willing to allow to be
murdered because you would deny them the best means of self defense?
And how many innocent people are you willing to see murdered because
they ran down to Kmart, bought a gun and went back to their argument
and shot somebody?
This is what waiting periods are designed to do - reduce the incidence
of murders of passion - provide a cooling off period.
You have many times pointed out that the vast majority of gun deaths
are homicides (and you would be wrong - check with Sandman) committed
by friends and family members, yet you would remove the one tool we
have for exerting some control over such crimes.
I also have to wonder what goes on in the mind of a man who thinks
weapons should be easier to get than alcohol or pain medication.
Post by FPPPost by Jeanne DouglasOh and going out to buy a gun to murder someone, with or without
waiting periods, is NOT a crime of passion, but premeditation in all
cases.
Bullshit, worse, you know it's bullshit. That's why there are,
generally, three degrees of murder recognized by law. First degree
which requires proof of premeditation, second degree which is a "crime
of passion" - temporary insanity pleas are also found here - and
third degree, usually considered 'manslaughter' where death was due to
negligence or culpable accident.
Post by FPPPost by Jeanne DouglasSo what have you gained? It's already premeditation, and a waiting
period isn't going to stop them or alter their objective to kill.....it
simply insures that victims who know of or suspect the threat exists
will be unable to act to get the means of defense they desperately need.
I can ignore this paragraph since it's based on faulty premises.
Post by FPPPost by Jeanne DouglasWe have the recent example of Carol Bowne who tried for months to get
the firearm that might have saved her life.....only to be stabbed to
death in her own driveway. Restraining orders, the police, they didn't
stop it. They couldn't stop it. She may have been able to, but the
waiting period prevented it.

"Defending his tardiness, the local police chief explained that the
application process usually takes more than two months, and that when
Browne died, his team was still waiting for her fingerprints to be
processed. Perhaps so. But this should serve as no acceptable excuse.
By state law, New Jersey is required to get back to permit petitioners
within 30 days. It didn't."
Which is ridiculous. The police chief ought to be charged with
manslaughter and this case should spark acceleration of changing the
New Jersey law. It won't but it should.
Of course, you wouldn't know that was my position had Fred not
restored the newsgroups so I could see the post you hid. Planning to
hide this one too? I post from alt.politics.republicans and
alt.politics.democrats. When you trim, leave those in so you can't
unjustly claim I failed to respond. Your readers can check the
headers, or just click "reply" to see of those groups are still listed
in your reply.
Post by FPPSo
Post by Jeanne Douglastell me, how many people are you willing to allow to die in the vain
hope that somehow a waiting period will prevent the murderer from being
able to kill?
I don't think a 5 or 7 day waiting period is unreasonable. That
lying, murdering, sack of shit police chief in New Jersey knows full
well he can get fingerprint results back from the FBI in less time
than it takes to eat a donut. And we all know that technology now
allows for instant background checks.
Post by FPPNobody is denying anybody anything.
That's like saying how many 12 year olds are denied having a job
because they can'd drive.
What state has a months long waiting period?
New Jersey, apparently.

Note: "get back to permit petitioners within 30 days," means the
*first step* in getting a New Jersey permit takes a month. And, "the
application process usually takes more than two months."
