I have one recording of the Trout Quintet: The Budapest SQ along with "Death and the Maiden" by the Juilliard on Sony Essential Classics. I just noticed a rave review of "The Trout" performed by Martin Helmchen, on Classics Today. I might get it. Anyone heard it? Anyone care to weigh in on a different favorite?

Favorites are Brendel et al, Ax et al, Demus et al., Schiff/Hagen.

I think that I've heard the Helmchen, but don't remember much about it.

I second the Schiff Hagen.

Assuming that you know all the standard recommendations, permit me to steer you to a beauty that is off the beaten track, namely the augmented Trio Chausson on Mirare, c/w a beautiful D. 929 Piano Trio. And the newish Eschenbach/Thymos recording is worth hearing, although I'm not sure that I prefer it to his old DG with Koeckert et al.

Hi MIF,
I always disllked The Trout until I came across this one, which I now play repeatedly for joy:
Thymos SQ with Christoph Eschenbach, Yann Dubost (b) and Jean-Frédéric Neuberger (p). (on the Avie label).
I never before expected to even try another Trout, as the many I'd heard all left me cold.
Try this on your favorite streaming service, and if you like it, buy it.

For those of you keeping score, I bought the "Trout" with Emanuel Ax, Pamela Frank, Yo Yo Ma, et. al., and it's just what I wanted. "gggg" posted a link to an old thread (what else is new?) on the same subject and I saw Simon Roberts' (remember him?) recommendation of this disc and I always thought highly of his suggestions. Very alert and uptempo playing. Just wha tthe doctor ordered.

For those interested, Simon's preferred HIP recording of the "Trout" was Collegium Aureum. Just an FYI.

L'Archibudelli + Jos van Immerseel. Was on Sony, then on Newton Classics.
Not sure if it's still available.

It's lovely. In a similar vein, the previously mentioned Demus w/Collegium Aureum. I've been sampling a batch of performances on hand and on line. Another oldie but goodie that is worth revisiting is Kentner/Hungarian SQ. I have it on Turnabout LP. Has it been issued on CD?
