The Zygon Inversion

An improvement over last week, mainly due to the lack of stupid annoying
kids that can't act and that there was no need for. Never work with
children or animals is the old adage. It wasn't coined for nothing.
Moffat should abide by it.

Apart from that the story was lacking any semblance of a plot and
continues to have the failings of the previous stories in this series.

Instead of action, adventure and romance the episode was dominated
overly long monologues and pseudo-psychology.

The same device used in Asylum of the Daleks with Clara inside her
kitchen while inside the Dalek is used again here but Clara is inside
her sitting room watching TV while inside the mind of the Zygon
impersonating her.

Does Moffat actually know how a guided missile works? It's not like
firing a bullet ahead of the target and waiting for the trajectories to
coincide. You can point the missile 180 degrees away the target and the
missile will swing round and find it all by itself. Being off by a few
degrees to the side isn't going to make the missile miss, and yet that's
what Clara attempts to do and the missile misses. Why not show the pilot
ejecting chaff so the first missile hits that instead? Anyway the second
missile hits the plane and blows it up but the Doctor and Osgood manage
to parachute out. Any attempt of creating tension by showing what's
happening inside the plane is lost because everything is centred on
Clara's cosy sitting room.

In this episode the BBC have shown themselves to be self serving
hypocrites since the scene showing the plane explode is left in while in
Robot of Sherwood the scene of the Robot losing it's head was cut out
ruining the entire plot even tough no one was actually beheaded by ISIS
when that episode went out and the story was not an allegory for IRIS or
Islamic terrorism in any way whereas The Zygon Invasion/Inversion was
and ISIS have claimed to have blown up the Russian plane that crashed
last week. The only reason I can see for the BBC's unjustified
censorship was because a journalist's life was threatened. The BBC
obviously don't give a stuff for the lives of the Russians that were
killed.

After that the Doctor and Osgood return to London. Why the BBC didn't
film a car chase I don't know. Instead the time is filled with more
pseudo-psychological clap trap.

Someone looking like Kate Stewart then shows up escorted by Zygons and
takes the Doctor and Osgood back to the Zygon lair where it's revealed
in flashback that she's the real Kate Stewart. How she managed to
persuade the Zygons she was the Zygon Kate or how she found out where
the Zygon lair was located is never shown or explained.

After even more pseudo-psychological clap trap and memory wipes (shown
in moronic flashback) the Zygon rebel leader Zygella? is forgiven and
realises the futility of her plan and the story turns into a damp squib.
Why the other Zygon rebels decide to follow her and stand down rather
than appointing another leader subservient the cause to take her place
is never explained.

Had these Zygons been ISIS they would have continued the fight to the
death until they had obtained a place in paradise complete with 200
nubile virgins. Instead we get the equivalent of Alexis Tsipras turning
his back on his own principles as becoming part of the establishment he
promised to fight against. Unfortunately the script is so shoddy that
the character change and 180 degree U turn is not convincing.

Again the Doctor puts on another vaudeville act which as usual is not
remotely funny and is portrayed as some sort of superhero with Clara as
Robin to his Batman. Is she destined to become Nightwing?

Finally Zygella takes on the appearance of Osgood so either the real
Osgood was the one that we saw at the start of the story or there are
now two Zygon Osgoods both using asthma inhalers. I'll go with the former.

The fact that Zygella was responsible for the murder of the pilots of
the Presidential Plane and various other murders including those of
Zygons is totally forgotten.

10/10 for entertainment.

82/100 for script writing.

I've liked both episodes, and the Doctor's monologue in this one was great - one of the few occasions Capaldi's actually been called upon to act rather than play by rote in the series.

The rocket launcher was an RPG, not a guided missile - handheld rocket launchers do not typically use electronic guidance systems.

'Totally forgotten'? There was quite a prominent speech on the subject of forgiveness, remember?

It could be that Aggy doesn't think that the Zygon Clara's actions should be forgiven so readily.

I share his wonderment that Zygon Clara/Bonnie could get the other Zygon rebels to return to the fold!

It would have been much better to have written it showing rebel command

So Clara's Warging of Zygella was totally point less then since all she

I assumed that there had been at least 15 prior instances of human and Zygon leaders confronting each other in the Osgood Box room and deciding to make peace and having the Doctor wipe their memories. I hadn't realized that we had ONE instance of the leaders confronting each other in that room, and the Doctor wiping their memories over and over again until they agreed to behave!

degrees to the side isn't going to make the missile miss, and yet that's
what Clara attempts to do and the missile misses.
Except it's impact was ruined when it was revealed that he'd wiped
everyone's memories 20 times by the time Zygella decided to repent.
Post by Agamemnon
It would have been much better to have written it showing rebel command
falling apart over internal arguments just like the Labour Party began
to do under Jeremy Corbyn and the SYRIZA hard left did under Alexis
Tsipras, the radicals being ostracised and Zygella doing a complete U
Turn when she realised she was never going to win. Better still the
moderate Zygons should have turned against the radicals and wiped them
out or put them in cold storage.
I expected the Doctor to recruit moderate Zygons to battle the radicals.
The War is over. The radical Zygon that was Clara became Osgoode.

It was a guided missile, not an RPG. Slightly improved 1970's military
technology.

But neither have any noticeable recoil. Instead of recoil, they have
back blast. It's basically just a tube with a rocket inside of it. You
DON'T want to be standing in the backblast area.

Real deal firing the FIM-92 Stinger missile (filmed on a USMC training
range)

This one shows the launch motors detaching.

It's that little white tube like thing you can see bouncing away on
the ground in front of the firing position in the 2nd, 3rd & 4th
shots.

Firing the simulator version off of a "boat".

Shows the backblast fairly well.

The Zygon Inversion
Does Moffat actually know how a guided missile works? It's not like
firing a bullet ahead of the target and waiting for the trajectories to
coincide. You can point the missile 180 degrees away the target and the
missile will swing round and find it all by itself. Being off by a few
degrees to the side isn't going to make the missile miss, and yet that's
what Clara attempts to do and the missile misses. Why not show the pilot

happening inside the plane is lost because everything is centred on
Clara's cosy sitting room.
My guess is he knows at least as much about missiles as you do. And,
he can, of course, have the writers do a bit of basic research before
committing to the script.

Manpads have a limited range and their guidance system has to lock on
to the target before firing. Even with a target lock they may not be
able to follow a maneuvering aircraft.

The "missile" in the episode appears to have been made to have the
appearance of an FIM-92A Stinger. It has an IR seeker. Point it 180
deg out & pull the trigger & it's just going to go about 8000m in a
straight line & blow up ... IF it will allow you to fire it at all.

They're kind of damned expensive & they have all kinds of interlocks
to keep you from firing it off without a target lock and wasting the
missile.

Lets take the following scenario as an example.

An enemy plane is heading towards you head on. You point the missile at
it and press the fire button. By the time the missile has ignited and
left the launcher the plane has flown over your head. What happens next?

The missile will fly up and forward to a safe distance until the safety
timer has elapsed. The heat sensor will detect the nearest heat
signature above it in all directions until if finds what it believes to
be one of a plane. The missile will then turn around to face the plane
and fly to a point in front of the plane while arming itself. If it
doesn't find a target the missile will not engage it's rockets or arm
itself and will drop to the ground or self destruct, or whatever it's
programmed to do in that event.

Then you were having a go in the wrong direction; "180 degrees off
target", so to speak.

You should to go back and find out who actually wrote that, because it
wasn't me. I did, however, try to correct that misstatement.

I was in the U.S. Army for 30+ years.

I've had the training & know to point the seeker at the target and
acquire Lock-On before the missile will release.

I've even had the opportunity to fire one with simulator rounds.

This is NOT me, because they are USMC and I was US Army, but it's the
same training device the Army used.

to 8 meters and go off!! (i.e. no chance to course correct!) :-)
Oh!! Really!! After twenty years in Australian Army, I was, sort of,
aware of all this .... I was just having a go at Pudentame for
suggesting you could point it 180 degrees off target, 'cause that is
most likely going to be pointing at some nearby dirt!!
Then you were having a go in the wrong direction; "180 degrees off
target", so to speak.
<snip>
If you going to fire a rocket / missile 180 degrees off target, then
you're holding the launcher back-to-front and will blow your own head
off. ;-)

The "missile" in the episode appears to have been made to have the
appearance of an FIM-92A Stinger. It has an IR seeker. Point it 180
deg out & pull the trigger & it's just going to go about 8000m in a
straight line & blow up ... IF it will allow you to fire it at all.

My guess is yes.
Well, isn't the whole idea that you cannot tell a Human from a humanised
Zygon, so how would you, a human, know if you were marring another Human
or not??

I suppose you could ask them, but then, if they said that they were a
human, too, would you (want to) believe them??

We have enough arguments about marriage amongst humans - e.g. some people still have issues with marriage after divorce, whether you can have multiple husbands/wives, same sex weddings, arranged marriages, etc.

Are humans allowed to marry Zygons?
My guess is yes.
Well, isn't the whole idea that you cannot tell a Human from a humanised
Zygon, so how would you, a human, know if you were marring another Human
or not??
I suppose you could ask them, but then, if they said that they were a
human, too, would you (want to) believe them??
Can the human-Zygon couple have babies?
I won't rule it out.

The "missile" in the episode appears to have been made to have the
appearance of an FIM-92A Stinger. It has an IR seeker. Point it 180
deg out & pull the trigger & it's just going to go about 8000m in a
straight line & blow up ... IF it will allow you to fire it at all.
But if you're 180 deg out with your aim, the missile will hit dirt in 2
to 8 meters and go off!! (i.e. no chance to course correct!) :-)
Oh!!
<snip>
If you going to fire a rocket / missile 180 degrees off target, then
you're holding the launcher back-to-front and will blow your own head
off. ;-)

Unlikely. The missile should be incapable of exploding until it travels far
enough not to kill the launcher. The military has long experience of shooting
itself in the foot in the heat of combat, so they try to make their weapons
incapable of doing that. Some disarm if they go in a half circle so a ship can't
torpedo itself. Gun turrets might have physical limitations so they can't shoot
off their own wings. That sort of thing. Missile, shells, bombs arm in flight.
Missile nuclear weapons have accelerometers to prevent arming.

Why hasn't our military gone a step further to rig our weapons to be disarmable by remote control if they are captured by our enemies?

Because the enemy would just reprogramme them. How about making a gun
that only works when it detects the finger prints of its owner as seen
on James Bond.

I've liked both episodes, and the Doctor's monologue in this one was
great - one of the few occasions Capaldi's actually been called upon to
act rather than play by rote in the series.
I didn't especially enjoy the episodes, but the monologue finally
reminded me of Doctor Who. Tom Baker could have said those words.

I wasn't happy with the buttons inside the boxes being labeled Truth
or Consequences. Yeah, it's the mantra repeated throughout the script,
but none of the characters could have known that other characters
were using the mantra.

I like Peter Capaldi as an actor; the monologue finally gave him
something to do.

And the Brigadier would have bombed the Zygons into obliteration anyway
or used the poison gas on them. Why would anyone in their right mind
allow a 5th Column to continue to exist. No wonder people have stopped
watching it. They're fed up with having their intelligence insulted.

Murderers are allowed to continue to murder, adults are still allowed to
impersonate children and infiltrate school buildings, terrorists can
continue to shoot down passenger planes, all because the Doctor thinks
he's god and has forgiven them, just like the Catholic church forgave
it's priests and brushed their crimes under the carpet.

Amateurish writing again. It's just a series of set pieces with nothing
linked together properly. You get the impression it was put together
after a brain storming session by people with no brains or common sense.

Truth or Consequences actually does exist.

Peter Capaldi was good in The Musketeers but not in Doctor Who. His
accent keeps going from one extreme to another and now he thinks he's
funny making it sound American. The vaudeville act has to stop.

If it is directed in completely the wrong direction (180 degrees), how
the hell would it know what you wanted it to blow up??

Ah!! So your "180 degrees away the target" was a little bit off!!

The heat sensor will detect the nearest heat
signature above it in all directions until it finds what it believes to
be one of a plane. The missile will then turn around to face the plane
and fly to a point in front of the plane while arming itself. If it
doesn't find a target the missile will not engage it's rockets or arm
itself and will drop to the ground or self destruct, or whatever it's
programmed to do in that event.

Does Moffat actually know how a guided missile works? It's not like
firing a bullet ahead of the target and waiting for the
trajectories to
coincide. You can point the missile 180 degrees away the target and the
missile will swing round and find it all by itself.
If it is directed in completely the wrong direction (180 degrees), how
the hell would it know what you wanted it to blow up??
If it was a sidewinder heat seeking missile then it would have a
rotating mirror sensor system that would seek out the source of heat in
any direction. The missiles are always fired forwards in the direction
of motion of the jet firing them but can be programmed to hit targets
180 degrees behind them.

Ah!! So your "180 degrees away the target" was a little bit off!!
Lets take the following scenario as an example.
An enemy plane is heading towards you head on. You point the missile at
it and press the fire button. By the time the missile has ignited and
left the launcher the plane has flown over your head. What happens next?
Yes, but a plane is, generally, "up there" in the sky somewhere. 180
degrees away, thinking three dimensionally, is "down there" in the dirt
somewhere, not far from your feet!! So, before the missile has a chance
to switch on, it has hit the dirt!!

No Boom!!

Well, if you are now talking "Zenith" then "180 degrees around the line
of zenith" is right under your feet, 'cause Zenith is the bit of sky
right above your head!!

I think the word you are looking for could be "Horizon" or "Azimuth"!

From Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zenith

"Zenith refers to an imaginary point directly "above" a particular
location, on the imaginary celestial sphere."

and

"The zenith is the "highest" point on the celestial sphere"

So, "180 degrees around the line of zenith" is directly below your feet
(assuming you are standing up .... and yes, I know about ASSuME!).

If I point my thumb to the Zenith, then my outstretched fingers would
point towards the horizon, which is 90 degrees from the Zenith, not 180
degrees!!

If you are talking 180 degrees around the horizon, then I'm not sure
what the applicable terms are for what's directly in-front of me and
what's directly behind me!

I would expect a missile that turns a half circle to disarm itself so it doesn't
blow up the launcher. Sort of like the safety that doesn't arm the missile until
it's travelled a safe distance.

With artillery, the round has to spin a certain number of times before
it arms, and there's a "bore ride" safety that doesn't allow the count
to begin until the round exits the tube.

MANPADs also have timers to prevent the sustainer motor from firing
too close to the launcher and crisping the person holding the tube.
The safety timer that allows the warhead to arm doesn't start until
the missile fires it's sustainer motor.

Being off by a few
degrees to the side isn't going to make the missile miss, and yet
that's what Clara attempts to do and the missile misses. Why not show
the pilot ejecting chaff so the first missile hits that instead? Anyway
the second missile hits the plane and blows it up but the Doctor and
Osgood manage to parachute out. Any attempt of creating tension by
showing what's happening inside the plane is lost because everything is
centred on Clara's cosy sitting room.
Do you know how a guided missile works? Have you been trained in their
use? Can you recognise the guided missile being deployed here? Are you
sure it's a guided missile? Still, to your point. Of course it lowers
the tension -that's what happens after cliffhangers
Post by Agamemnon
In this episode the BBC have shown themselves to be self serving
hypocrites since the scene showing the plane explode is left in while
in Robot of Sherwood the scene of the Robot losing it's head was cut
out ruining the entire plot even tough no one was actually beheaded by
ISIS when that episode went out and the story was not an allegory for
IRIS or Islamic terrorism in any way whereas The Zygon
Invasion/Inversion was and ISIS have claimed to have blown up the
Russian plane that crashed last week. The only reason I can see for the
BBC's unjustified censorship was because a journalist's life was
threatened. The BBC obviously don't give a stuff for the lives of the
Russians that were killed.
After that the Doctor and Osgood return to London. Why the BBC didn't
film a car chase I don't know. Instead the time is filled with more
pseudo-psychological clap trap.
Why should there be a car chase? What would have been added to the
drama by scenes of cars driving very fast?
Post by Agamemnon
Someone looking like Kate Stewart then shows up escorted by Zygons and
takes the Doctor and Osgood back to the Zygon lair where it's revealed
in flashback that she's the real Kate Stewart. How she managed to
persuade the Zygons she was the Zygon Kate or how she found out where
the Zygon lair was located is never shown or explained.
Did that matter?
Post by Agamemnon
After even more pseudo-psychological clap trap and memory wipes (shown
in moronic flashback) the Zygon rebel leader Zygella? is forgiven and
realises the futility of her plan and the story turns into a damp
squib. Why the other Zygon rebels decide to follow her and stand down
rather than appointing another leader subservient the cause to take her
place is never explained.
I think that's the point of the "fifteen times" remark. Bonnie was just
the one who brought the breaking of the ceasefire closest to success
and it's the point of the last interchange between the two Osgoods
Post by Agamemnon
Had these Zygons been ISIS they would have continued the fight to the
death until they had obtained a place in paradise complete with 200
nubile virgins.
But they aren't ISIS. They are, as the script makes clear, "people" who
are frustrated and who get angry in a kind of unfocussed way. The are
the kind of people who think that the world should be better and fairer
than it is and who can be radicalised by the idea that picking up a gun
can make the world the way they want it
Post by Agamemnon
Instead we get the equivalent of Alexis Tsipras turning his back on
his own principles as becoming part of the establishment he promised to
fight against. Unfortunately the script is so shoddy that the character
change and 180 degree U turn is not convincing.
Again the Doctor puts on another vaudeville act which as usual is not
remotely funny and is portrayed as some sort of superhero with Clara as
Robin to his Batman. Is she destined to become Nightwing?
Actually The Doctor is far less a superhero here than he has been for a
long time. All he has is language and persuasion. If you want to look
for "superhero", look atb David Tennat's Doctor
Post by Agamemnon
Finally Zygella takes on the appearance of Osgood so either the real
Osgood was the one that we saw at the start of the story or there are
now two Zygon Osgoods both using asthma inhalers. I'll go with the former.
The fact that Zygella was responsible for the murder of the pilots of
the Presidential Plane and various other murders including those of
Zygons is totally forgotten.
10/10 for entertainment.
82/100 for script writing.

Does Moffat actually know how a guided missile works? It's not like
firing a bullet ahead of the target and waiting for the trajectories

The reason I am making all sorts of assumptions is because the writer
has left me no choice but to do so. The type of missile used was not
explained. An unguided missile would have missed 99 times out of 100.
The only logical inference is that the missile was guided. If if was

to hit the target. The assumption is that it's a heat seeking missile as
a radar guided missile would need to have the target illuminated.

No. What was needed to build up tension was a credible threat and a shot
of what was going on inside the plane with the missile approaching. What
the writer instead did was to diffuse the situation with a shot of Clara
in her sitting room calmly watching TV. All the tension was gone. You
knew that the missile was going to miss long before she even influenced
Zygella. Any plane that was supposed to be carrying a World President
would have been built to include ant-missile defences. If it didn't have
such defences or the didn't work then the writer should have made that
clear.

think so. If you take out all the moronic crap with Capaldi's vaudeville
act, Clara's living room scenes which wasted around 10 minutes showing

obvious was going to happen even before the episode began, and the over

Marx Brothers comedy routine you could do everything an American show

sure it's a guided missile? Still, to your point. Of course it lowers
the tension -that's what happens after cliffhangers
It didn't happen after the cliffhanger. Tension was lost during the
cliffhanger because the writer failed to build up the tension by
showing the panic happening inside the plane and attempts to evade the
missile.
But to do that you would have had to have had, in episode 1, the shot
that missed. That would have telegraphed the curveball that came with
episode 2 that Clara could influence Bonnie
Lets have the following: Episode one end: We see the panic inside the plane as Missile one approaches. Episode two start: The same as we saw it, with Real Clara making Zygon Clara misaim missile one, which misses. The Zygon Clara succeeds in nailing the Presidential plane with missile two.

The Osgood boxes Kate and Zygon Clara were pondering were empty. But are there any full Osgood boxes with the abilities to blow up London, turn Zygons inside out, freeze Zygons in human form, or force Zygons to assume Zygon form?

Could be.

The Zygon Inversion
Had these Zygons been ISIS they would have continued the fight to the
death until they had obtained a place in paradise complete with 200
nubile virgins.
But they aren't ISIS. They are, as the script makes clear, "people" who
are frustrated and who get angry in a kind of unfocussed way. The are
the kind of people who think that the world should be better and fairer
than it is and who can be radicalised by the idea that picking up a gun
can make the world the way they want it
That sounds like ISIS and other terrorist groups!

When I read this I thought I'd written it myself.
Then I remembered I couldn't have written it myself because I never
watched the bloody thing. Gave up after Monty Python and the Magnificent
7. Earth under threat by more alien baddies bored into submission by
another longwinded speech.
It's as bad as it can possibly get and yet you hand it 100% for
entertainment, and 80% for shitty writing. Home team solidarity as the
audience leaves in droves. Diehards hoping it'll get better if they simply
turn up and cheer.
But the truth is it'll just get shite-er and shite-er because the players
don't give a toss beyond collecting their oversized cheques.
In my view it's long overdue for another fifteen or twenty year rest.

I consider Doctor Who a good idea ruined. I really can't be bothered
with Moffat's crawling for a paycheck with "only the BBC blah blah"
nonsense.

I know it's easy to criticise but...

Hopeful habit aside I only watch a handful of shows and they are all
American. A small lifestyle tweak and I don't think I would miss movies
or episodic shows at all. (For the record I don't watch broadcast TV.)

now two Zygon Osgoods both using asthma inhalers. I'll go with the former.
How are these 2 Osgoods faring with UNIT out of commission?

But why would the original Zygon Osgood have fallen for Missy' tricks during Death in Heaven?
