The Zygon Inversion
An improvement over last week, mainly due to the lack of stupid annoying
kids that can't act and that there was no need for. Never work with
children or animals is the old adage. It wasn't coined for nothing.
Moffat should abide by it.
Apart from that the story was lacking any semblance of a plot and
continues to have the failings of the previous stories in this series.
Instead of action, adventure and romance the episode was dominated
overly long monologues and pseudo-psychology.
The same device used in Asylum of the Daleks with Clara inside her
kitchen while inside the Dalek is used again here but Clara is inside
her sitting room watching TV while inside the mind of the Zygon
impersonating her.
Does Moffat actually know how a guided missile works? It's not like
firing a bullet ahead of the target and waiting for the trajectories to
coincide. You can point the missile 180 degrees away the target and the
missile will swing round and find it all by itself. Being off by a few
degrees to the side isn't going to make the missile miss, and yet that's
what Clara attempts to do and the missile misses. Why not show the pilot
ejecting chaff so the first missile hits that instead? Anyway the second
missile hits the plane and blows it up but the Doctor and Osgood manage
to parachute out. Any attempt of creating tension by showing what's
happening inside the plane is lost because everything is centred on
Clara's cosy sitting room.
In this episode the BBC have shown themselves to be self serving
hypocrites since the scene showing the plane explode is left in while in
Robot of Sherwood the scene of the Robot losing it's head was cut out
ruining the entire plot even tough no one was actually beheaded by ISIS
when that episode went out and the story was not an allegory for IRIS or
Islamic terrorism in any way whereas The Zygon Invasion/Inversion was
and ISIS have claimed to have blown up the Russian plane that crashed
last week. The only reason I can see for the BBC's unjustified
censorship was because a journalist's life was threatened. The BBC
obviously don't give a stuff for the lives of the Russians that were
killed.
After that the Doctor and Osgood return to London. Why the BBC didn't
film a car chase I don't know. Instead the time is filled with more
pseudo-psychological clap trap.
Someone looking like Kate Stewart then shows up escorted by Zygons and
takes the Doctor and Osgood back to the Zygon lair where it's revealed
in flashback that she's the real Kate Stewart. How she managed to
persuade the Zygons she was the Zygon Kate or how she found out where
the Zygon lair was located is never shown or explained.
After even more pseudo-psychological clap trap and memory wipes (shown
in moronic flashback) the Zygon rebel leader Zygella? is forgiven and
realises the futility of her plan and the story turns into a damp squib.
Why the other Zygon rebels decide to follow her and stand down rather
than appointing another leader subservient the cause to take her place
is never explained.
Had these Zygons been ISIS they would have continued the fight to the
death until they had obtained a place in paradise complete with 200
nubile virgins. Instead we get the equivalent of Alexis Tsipras turning
his back on his own principles as becoming part of the establishment he
promised to fight against. Unfortunately the script is so shoddy that
the character change and 180 degree U turn is not convincing.
Again the Doctor puts on another vaudeville act which as usual is not
remotely funny and is portrayed as some sort of superhero with Clara as
Robin to his Batman. Is she destined to become Nightwing?
Finally Zygella takes on the appearance of Osgood so either the real
Osgood was the one that we saw at the start of the story or there are
now two Zygon Osgoods both using asthma inhalers. I'll go with the former.
The fact that Zygella was responsible for the murder of the pilots of
the Presidential Plane and various other murders including those of
Zygons is totally forgotten.
10/10 for entertainment.
82/100 for script writing.
