Parrikar, others mourn Pope?s death
NT News Desk

Panaji April 3: The former chief minister, Mr Manohar
Parrikar in his condolence message said, ?in the death
of Pope John Paul-II the world has lost a true
statesman and the Christian community an enlightened
pontiff who gave a new impetus to the Catholic faith.?
?His work towards bringing together the various
Christian sects went a long way in bringing about
peace in the troubled world that we live in today,? he
added.

Mr Parrikar said that he was particularly concerned
about the weak, oppressed and downtrodden which was
reflected in his concern for the working class,
particularly in his homeland of Poland. He further
said that Goa and Goans have also benefited from his
visionary work.

Besides his visit to Goa where he celebrated a mass in
Konkani attended by thousands at Campal, the former
chief minister said that Pope John Paul-II in
particular gave Goans something to be proud of.

In his bid to provide role models to the Catholic
community, Mr Parrikar said he hastened the process of
canonisation to give the world more saints. ?Goa also
benefited from this as two sons of the soil, Venerable
Juze Vaz and Blessed Fr Agnelo are on the way of
becoming saints,? he added.

Mr Parrikar stated that Pope John Paul II was truly
pragmatic and understood the changing scenario of the
world. Recognising the deep anguish caused by the
misadventure of inquisition, he further mentioned that
he had the grace to apologise for the same and apply a
soothing balm on festering wounds.

The Goa state committee of the Communist Party of
India (CPI) mourned the death of Pope John Paul II and
remembered his concern that weaker section of the
society must always have the rights of livelihood,
social justice, liberation from exploitation and life
free of destitution, disease, hunger and poverty.

Well Said Mr. Mahohar Parrikar, did you say it from your heart with a clean
consience of just apple polishing the catholic community, the Pope did
apologize for the misdeeds of others, how about you apologizing to the Goan
Catholic Community for denouncing Catholic holidays and strive hard to
reannounse them again? Can you do it? Mr. Parrikar please don't pour vinegar
on open wounds which are yet to heal.

May the soul of our "Beloved Pope" rest in peace.

Sanny Vaz.

Did the Pope apologise for the Inquisition as Parrikar claims?
Post by goaworldtoday at yahoo.com (Goa's Pride)
Mr Parrikar stated that Pope John Paul II was truly
pragmatic and understood the changing scenario of
the world. Recognising the deep anguish caused by the
misadventure of inquisition, he further mentioned
that he had the grace to apologise for the same and apply
a soothing balm on festering wounds.
It doesn't seem to be the case. See the list below. The ex-CM (or his
advisors) seems to have got his facts wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Paul_II#Apologies

Apologies:

* On October 31, 1992, he apologised for the persecution of the Italian
philosopher Galileo Galilei in the trial by the Roman Catholic Church in
1633.

* On August 9, 1993, he apologised for Catholic involvement with the
African slave trade.

* In May, 1995, in the Czech Republic, he begged forgiveness for the
Church's role in stake burnings and the religious wars that followed the
Protestant Reformation.

* On July 10, 1995, he released a letter to "every woman" to apologise
for the Church's stance against women's rights and for the historical
denigration of women.

* On March 16, 1998 he apologised for the inactivity and silence of
Roman Catholics during the Holocaust.

* On December 18, 1999, he apologised for the execution of Jan Hus in
1415.

* During a public Mass of Pardons on March 12, 2000, he asked
forgiveness for the sins of Catholics throughout the ages for violating
"the rights of ethnic groups and peoples, and shown contempt for their
cultures and religious traditions."

* On May 4, 2001, he apologised to the Patriarch of Constantinople for
the sins of the Crusader conquest of Constantinople in 1204.

* On November 22, 2001, he apologised, via the Internet, for
missionary abuses in the past against indigenous peoples of the South
Pacific.

RESPONSE: I guess Parrikar and his cohorts took the above public Mass
of pardons to include the inquisitions committed in whatever sector in
the World and during which ever period. It fit his bill for propaganda
purposes!

Dear FN,

Maybe Pope John Paul II was not aware of what happened in "tiny Goa" in the
16th century. If the next pope comes from Portugal, maybe an apology would
be forthcoming. Be that as it may, here's an excerpt from Manohar
Malgonkar's "Inside Goa":

"The year 1560 was the golden jubilee of the beginning of Portuguese rule in
India. Almost as though to mark the occasion with the bestowal of a special
gift on the people of Goa, they brought in the Inquisition.

"It was not a weapon against the remaining Hindus of Goa, as much as against
the Goans who had already accepted Christianity. But of course, any Hindu
who was discovered practicing the religious rites of his faith and thus
indulging in "magic and witchcraft" came under its purview.

"The priests had realized that there was still a good deal of stubborn
resistance among the converts to their new faith. Many of them were not
observing its rituals with sufficient punctilio, and a few were suspected of
practicing their erstwhile faith in secret. These last were the repertidos
who were now to be rooted out and burned alive.

"The ceremony of burning these heretics was called the Auto da Fe, which
means, an Act of Faith. The Viceroy who, with a stroke of his pen, had
banned the practice of sati in Goa was powerless to stop these other
burnings. Indeed the Viceroy, with his full court actually participated in
these ceremonies, which were conducted with great fanfare and ?clat.

"It was quite true that many Christians in Goa had not been able to shake
off the ingrained taboos of their earlier faith. But even for those who
considered themselves fully committed to Christianity, it was not easy to
grasp all the intricate formalism of its beliefs and divinities, because of
the formidable language barrier that existed between themselves and their
religious teachers. For one thing, the Portuguese, as the ruling race, had
little interest in learning Konkani; indeed they had systematically burned
all Konkani written works in case some of them contained "precepts and
doctrines of idolatry". What was more, while some priests were no doubt men
of learning, the rank and file of the priestly orders of Goa was made up of
mercenaries who had joined up for the sake of the material advantages that
the profession offered, especially in Goa. If, as Mr. T.B. Cunha tells us
"every sailor who came to Goa preferred to be a monk", there could not be
many among them who were so dedicated to their calling as to go to the
trouble of learning a foreign language merely to be able to help out the
converts, and indeed there may have been a few among them who did not even
know their own language very well. And as to the Goans, even though Latin
and Portuguese were taught in the schools that the Portuguese had opened,
not many of them had attained sufficient mastery over this language, to be
able to perceive the fundamentals behind the doctrines of Christianity. They
expressed doubts, questions; they may even have, at least in private
conversations, expressed disbelief.

"These wholly natural uncertainties were now to be resolved by bludgeoning
them into insensibility, by discipline and terror. The Inquisition was a
tribunal, whose principal judge was sent from Portugal and bore the title of
the 'The Grand Inquisitor'. In his own sphere he was not answerable to
anyone in Goa. He and his two colleagues made their own rules, interpreted
them and dealt out punishments. Their codified laws ran to over 230 folio
pages, and their edicts, which sought to tell the people of Goa what they
might or might not do, to over 5,000 words. They lived in a palace of which
the people of Goa spoke in whispers as the Vodlem Gor, the Big House, where
mysterious rites were practiced and from which screams could be often heard.
Their procedures were conducted in secret and were smothered in mumbo-jumbo.
Their logic was diabolically perverse and the tortures they devised could
only have been the product of sick minds. On the evidence of the Archbishop
of Evora, in Portugal: "If everywhere the Inquisition was an infamous court,
the infamy, however base, however vile, however corrupt and determined by
worldly interests, it was never more so than in Goa."

"It went on for two hundred years, even though there was a short
interruption. In that time, there can be no doubt that many more 'heretics'
were burned alive than the number of Hindu widows saved from burning because
of the banning of the practice of sati. Aside from this, there were
thousands of others who were subjected to some of the most perversely
sadistic tortures that the Inquisitors had devised.

"The interruption came in 1774 when the Marquis of Pombal, one of the
greatest liberals of his time, became the Prime Minister of Portugal and
ordered its abolition. But it came right back, four years later when Pombal
was ousted from power. It was finally closed on 16th June 1812, as a result,
of strong British pressure and at the time when British troops were actually
stationed on Goa's soil."

It was finally closed on 16th June 1812, as a result,
of strong British pressure and at the time when British troops were actually
stationed on Goa's soil."

only have been the product of sick minds.

Did the Pope apologise for the Inquisition as Parrikar claims?

Mr Parrikar stated that Pope John Paul II was truly
pragmatic and understood the changing scenario of
the world. Recognising the deep anguish caused by the
misadventure of inquisition, he further mentioned
that he had the grace to apologise for the same and apply
a soothing balm on festering wounds.
It doesn't seem to be the case. See the list below. The ex-CM (or his
advisors) seems to have got his facts wrong.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Paul_II#Apologies
Pacific.

Quoting TIME/CNN:
Pope John Paul II 1920-2005
Defender of the Faith
By David Van Biema
Tuesday, April 5, 2005 Posted: 5:11 PM EDT (2111 GMT)

John Paul II had the courage to revisit the painful
past, if not the willingness to let his church stand
totally naked before it. Toward the end of the 20th
century, reflecting on the Catholic Church's two
millenniums, John Paul issued extraordinary apologies
for the Inquisition and the Crusades.

--- Further:
Is the Pope Overdoing the Apologies?
He may be providing ammunition to critics who would
like the Church to dismantle core doctrines.

This column first appeared on Beliefnet in 2000.

On no fewer than 94 occasions, according to a the
Italian journalist Luigi Accattoli, Pope John Paul II
has publicly admitted that the Catholic Church was
guilty of errors in the past. Now, in what Religion
News Service calls "a move unprecedented in two
millenniums of Roman Catholic history," John Paul has
issued a summation of all these apologies. He read the
document, "Memory and Reconciliation: The Church and
the Mistakes of the Past," at a "solemn ceremony" on
March 12, the first Sunday of Lent. A preparatory
document, outlining the conditions and limits of the
forthcoming apology, was also issued by the Vatican.

Dear Goa's Pride<www.goa-world.com> <goaworldtoday at yahoo.com>

We do understand that you have to do a job of reporting to the world what
Goan newspapers say w.r.t. happenings like the death of he 84 year old
Pontiff of the Catholic Church.

But do you have to repeat these 'CROCODILE TEARS' coming out of Manohar
Parrikar, the Ex-Chief Minister of Goa?
You might have just as well said the same thing about MODI of Gujarat.

We Goans in Goa do not need to read about what Manohar Parrikar says about
the departed POPE. He would be more confortable in driving a sharp knife in
his back if he had the slightest opportunity. After all Manohar Parrikar
still gloats over the way he has wielded the pick-axe on the dome of the
Babri Masjid at Ayodhya.

Goans in Goa do not need your help to tell us what Manohar Parrikar is made
of. If at all he walks in his sleep or have a sweat session in his deep
sleep, it will be how to get the Christians and Muslims to run into the sea
and commit suicide.
For Manohar Parrikar is a living poison, who will ultimately choke on it and
be done with.

Pope John Paul II will be better off without the diarrhea coming out of
Manohar Parrikar's mouth.

Re: "To Me, Knowledge Knows No Bounds- CM" (GT)
To me, Knowledge Knows no bounds- CM

Gomantak Times- 4 Feb ? 2002
Critiques are absolutely necessary in all spheres of
our decision making processes, whether governmental,
cultural, economical or entertainment etc. It is said
that the Holywood film industry is ruled by critiques.
It makes or breaks a film. Therefore, Manohar Parrikar
should not take criticisms in a manner that ?NO MATTER
WHAT I DO, PEOPLE ALWAYS CRITICISE. Criticisms, if
properly heeded to, keeps the decision making process
on a straight course.

It is a fact that the many previous governments of Goa
have been squandering the state exchequer. I have
always maintained that if there was a strict and
accountable administration for only 20 years out of
40, our goan roads would have been paved with gold.
But that is another matter altogether for Goans to
evaluate. We do acknowledge that Manohar Parrikar has,
to a certain extent, improved the health of the state
exchequer. Credit must be given where it is due. And
when Manohar Parrikar says, as CM ?I AM JUDGED ALL THE
TIME?, this is absolutely true. The No. 1 is always
under the spotlight and any wrong doing down the line
always reflects on the top.

Sir, show us that your administration is effective so
that we goans can keep our head high.

Pacific.

A preparatory
document, outlining the conditions and limits of the
forthcoming apology, was also issued by the Vatican.

day of Vasco da Gama? Did they not identify the muslims to be put to the
sword in November-December 1510 that Albuquerque gloated over? Do their
successors need an apology from the Pope for what the Portuguese did as a
nation..not as a religion? Who should apologise to the NON-BRAHMIN Hindu and
NON-HINDU Goans for bring the Portuguese to rule over them, rape them and
convert them. Let the successors to Timmaji and Mhal Pai apologise to their
fellow Goans first and then ask for an apology from the Pope.

We do understand that you have to do a job of reporting to the world what
Goan newspapers say w.r.t. happenings like the death of he 84 year old
Pontiff of the Catholic Church.

But do you have to repeat these 'CROCODILE TEARS' coming out of Manohar

We Goans in Goa do not need to read about what Manohar Parrikar says about

his back if he had the slightest opportunity.

Well Said Mr. Mahohar Parrikar, did you say it from your heart with a clean
consience of just apple polishing the catholic community, the Pope did
apologize for the misdeeds of others, how about you apologizing to the Goan
Catholic Community for denouncing Catholic holidays and strive hard to
reannounse them again? Can you do it? Mr. Parrikar please don't pour vinegar

May the soul of our "Beloved Pope" rest in peace.

Pacific.

A preparatory
document, outlining the conditions and limits of the
forthcoming apology, was also issued by the Vatican.

go a step further and demand reparation from Portugal.

..............................

There was no apology for the Inquisition. Is one due? Was not Admiral Timmaji
who brought Afonso de Albuquerque to Goa not a HINDY BRAHMIN? Was not Mhal Pai
Vernekar the same? Did they not trade with the Portuguese upto 1545 from the
day of Vasco da Gama? Did they not identify the muslims to be put to the

successors need an apology from the Pope for what the Portuguese did as a

But that is another matter altogether for Goans to

when Manohar Parrikar says, as CM ?I AM JUDGED ALL THE

Did the Pope apologise for the Inquisition as Parrikar claims?

the world. Recognising the deep anguish caused by the

Pacific.

The Vatican has apologised for the agony inflicted on Galileo Galilei.
But the terrible agony inflicted on the Hindus of India during the Goa

an apology from the Vatican for the Goa Inquisition. In fact, we should
go a step further and demand reparation from Portugal.

..............................

Did they not identify the muslims to be put to the
sword in November-December 1510 that Albuquerque gloated over? Do their
successors need an apology from the Pope for what the Portuguese did as a
nation..not as a religion? Who should apologise to the NON-BRAHMIN Hindu and
NON-HINDU Goans for bring the Portuguese to rule over them, rape them and
convert them. Let the successors to Timmaji and Mhal Pai apologise to their
fellow Goans first and then ask for an apology from the Pope.

Parrikar says about the departed POPE. He would be
more confortable in driving a sharp knife in his back
if he had the slightest opportunity. After all Manohar

Parrikar still gloats over the way he has wielded the
pick-axe on the dome of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya.

Goans in Goa do not need your help to tell us what
Manohar Parrikar is made of. If at all he walks in his
sleep or have a sweat session in his deep sleep, it
will be how to get the Christians and Muslims to run
into the sea and commit suicide.
For Manohar Parrikar is a living poison, who will
ultimately choke on it and be done with.

Pope John Paul II will be better off without the
diarrhea coming out of Manohar Parrikar's mouth.

Did the Pope apologise for the Inquisition as Parrikar claims?

the world. Recognising the deep anguish caused by the

Pacific.

The Vatican has apologised for the agony inflicted on Galileo Galilei.
But the terrible agony inflicted on the Hindus of India during the Goa
Inquisition remain buried in the carefully crafted history of the
Church as a benign institution. It is time India demanded and secured
an apology from the Vatican for the Goa Inquisition. In fact, we should
go a step further and demand reparation from Portugal.

..............................

Did they not identify the muslims to be put to the
sword in November-December 1510 that Albuquerque gloated over? Do their
successors need an apology from the Pope for what the Portuguese did as a
nation..not as a religion? Who should apologise to the NON-BRAHMIN Hindu and
NON-HINDU Goans for bring the Portuguese to rule over them, rape them and
convert them. Let the successors to Timmaji and Mhal Pai apologise to their
fellow Goans first and then ask for an apology from the Pope.

Viva Goa.

---------------------
Sir, show us that your administration is effective so
that we goans can keep our head high.

Instead of ?Venerable Juze Vaz and Blessed Fr Agnelo?

Did the Pope apologise for the Inquisition as Parrikar claims?
Post by goaworldtoday at yahoo.com (Goa's Pride)
Mr Parrikar stated that Pope John Paul II was truly
pragmatic and understood the changing scenario of
the world. Recognising the deep anguish caused by the
misadventure of inquisition, he further mentioned

a soothing balm on festering wounds.

Pacific.

Did they not identify the muslims to be put to the
sword in November-December 1510 that Albuquerque gloated over? Do their
successors need an apology from the Pope for what the Portuguese did as a
nation..not as a religion? Who should apologise to the NON-BRAHMIN Hindu and
NON-HINDU Goans for bring the Portuguese to rule over them, rape them and
convert them. Let the successors to Timmaji and Mhal Pai apologise to their
fellow Goans first and then ask for an apology from the Pope.

Viva Goa.

Well Said Mr. Mahohar Parrikar, did you say it from your heart with a clean
consience of just apple polishing the catholic community, the Pope did
apologize for the misdeeds of others, how about you apologizing to the Goan

---------------------
Sir, show us that your administration is effective so
that we goans can keep our head high.

Pacific.

unless there is a political dimension to the same.

Carlos wrote quoting Gupta:
The Vatican has apologised for the agony inflicted on Galileo Galilei.
But the terrible agony inflicted on the Hindus of India during the Goa
Inquisition remain buried in the carefully crafted history of the
Church as a benign institution. It is time India demanded and secured
an apology from the Vatican for the Goa Inquisition. In fact, we should
go a step further and demand reparation from Portugal.

..............................

Did they not identify the muslims to be put to the
sword in November-December 1510 that Albuquerque gloated over? Do their
successors need an apology from the Pope for what the Portuguese did as a
nation..not as a religion? Who should apologise to the NON-BRAHMIN Hindu and
NON-HINDU Goans for bring the Portuguese to rule over them, rape them and
convert them. Let the successors to Timmaji and Mhal Pai apologise to their
fellow Goans first and then ask for an apology from the Pope.

Viva Goa.
