Very many happy returns of the day, Chris!
Definitely not the best weather: torrents of rain, bright sun, windy, and a
thunder storm. We did manage to get out and back for a lunch locally
though! It can jolly well improve for Saturday when we go out with the
family for lunch!

I drove to collect granddaughter from school and the M! from Watford
to Highgate was almost invisible. Rain emptied down. Then at Highgate
the road was dry, no sign it had rained. Pulled up outside the school
in plenty of time and the sky darkened. 3.30 the nuggering heavens
opened. Luckily granddaughter said she likes her hair getting wet.
She did have a hood and an umbrella but enjoyed the rain. I did not.
And then later from her home to my car I got soaked again.

I'd been congratulating myself this morning because every day when I
walk the sog around 10.30 it stops raining and the sun comes out.
Serves me right.

I continue to be puzzled why keyboard manufacturers (both standard and
laptop) continue to make them with the symbols just in the top left
corner of the keys and small.

You can get keyboards with clearer keys; I've just looked at both ebay
and amazon, but they seem to be getting on for 30 pounds; this puzzles
me, as within the last year or three a friend bought (a new) one at a
computer fair for about a fiver, which seemed fine. He bought it for his
mother - standard size keyboard, but yellow keys with (big) black
symbols.

If you're stuck with (or want to use) a laptop, or like your present
keyboard's feel or something about it, you can get stickers: white or
yellow on black or vice versa, or black on fluorescent (but not vice
versa), for 2-3 pounds a sheet. (Make sure you check they're UK layout
if that's what you have - pound sign on the 3 and check where ~#@'"
are.) Note that despite claims they'll fit anything, they're too large
for laptop keys, and you'll either have to trim them or have them
overhang towards the back.

I'm OK on eyesight so far, but do often work in low light, so wanted the
bigger symbols. If I'd been using a normal separable keyboard, I'd have
been tempted by the illuminated ones - there are lots of options, and
I'd obviously have gone for one of the ones where the light actually
comes through the keys through a symbol shape, not just between the
keys.

Indeed. I have one which was rather expensive as it is sold for
gaming. You can actually set the hue and brightness for every
individual key, should you wish:

That looks more or less the one my friend got (don't know if his was
"waterproof with drain holes" mind!), and is certainly more like the
price.

Do note that, as shown (despite being on amazon.co.uk), that one is US
layout: look at shifted 2 and 3, and where #'~@" are (and I think no
pound sign). This is not insurmountable - there are two choices: either
ignore the actual symbols on the keyboard and carry on as you are
(assuming your system is set up for UK keyboard layout): this will mean
you don't type what's on the keys; or change your PC to US layout, which
will be unfamiliar but you soon get used to it, and you use AllChars to
get the pound sign (or just type pounds or GBP).

(Or ask the seller if it actually is a UK layout and they've just used a
stock photo - or if they have options.)

(The "treat northern Ireland differently" option seems to have come back!)

Thank you. It's a PC. B did put a couple pf stickers on keys that had
faded on a previous keyboard. I could just put my glasses on and then
not need to enlarge the screen as much either. Things are sort of
changing but the symbols aer definitely the worst.

(amzn.to/2orvJjw for short.) Interesting. Rather expensive compared to
other sticker sheets (8.69 - that's about the same as the complete
keyboard otherrats are discussing [the one with the drain holes]), but:
o includes a USB light _and_ tweezers (to help application)
o includes a "we'll replace ones you screw up", and 3 yr warranty
o says the symbol goes right through. (Two of my stickers - I bought one
of the 2 or 3 pound sets - have worn [oddly, ALT and one of the SHIFT
rather than a letter], though not by much.)

Although it _says_ "Fits both Laptop and desk top", looking at the first
picture (you can zoom in), the stickers look physically too _tall_ to
me. (There is a picture of them on a laptop, but that's the one picture
that's blurred so I can't see clearly whether they're overhanging the
keys. Or it might be a carefully-chosen laptop [it's an hp].)

[The heading says "(U.S. English Keyboard)", but the text says "(UK
layout)", and the pictures do indeed show a pound sign on the 3.]

For some, the idea of a little light (doesn't have to be USB, but that's
probably simplest if you can spare a socket) might suffice on its own;
for laptop use, I'd go more for one that clips onto the top of the
screen rather than on a gooseneck - gets in the way less, and I think
less stress on the socket. I'm very happy with this type

(amzn.to/2nBEhVa), though I don't think I paid anywhere near that much.

I noticed that, but didn't see it as at all negative - a positive if
anything!

Seems perfectly reasonable to me, that folk with poor eyesight (rather
than old) might be slightly more likely to knock over their coffee or
other drink; a bit brutal, but I suspect true nevertheless.

I'm OK on eyesight so far, but do often work in low light, so wanted the
bigger symbols. If I'd been using a normal separable keyboard, I'd have
been tempted by the illuminated ones - there are lots of options, and
I'd obviously have gone for one of the ones where the light actually
comes through the keys through a symbol shape, not just between the
keys.

I have difficulty seeing the keys now.I need bigger clearer keys.
[]
(Make sure you check they're UK layout
are.) Note that despite claims they'll fit anything, they're too large
for laptop keys, and you'll either have to trim them or have them
overhang towards the back.
I'm OK on eyesight so far, but do often work in low light, so wanted the

Would probably need a lot more flushing through to remove it if it did,

One of the daughters spilt milkshake (probably strawberry) on my work
keyboard one weekend when I had literally taken work home. That was the
first time I dismantled a keyboard and lead to my realising you could mend
a broken printed circuit with a 'silver' marker pen (pencil sometimes works
too).

That's very interesting. Can you remember what make/brand/whatever the
"silver" pen was? I ask, because it sounds as if it might be useful for
repairing car rear window heaters, and both somewhat cheaper and more
usable than the silver paint you used to be able to buy [still can
online] for that purpose (which does work, but needs several goes, and
is too runny. The marker pens sound as if the consistency would be
better).
I'm not sure, this was last century but I doubt brand matters. I think all
'metallic' markers probably use aluminium in the 'ink'. If it claims to be
acrylic then it will put up with a degree of flexing and you should be able
to build up some thickness if you let it dry between coats.

Apropos acrylic markers, grandd#1 broke her arm at the end of the summer
term so had her arm in a rather stylish deep-purple cast for the holidays
(causing some wardrobe problems as garments already purchased could not be
put on) and family were allowed to sign it - she was very fussy about where
the names went. I used a fairly recently acquired 'gold' acrylic paint pen*
to write my name. She was told off for use of acrylic on the cast when she
went to have it removed. They claimed it blunts the blade.

*refillable with spare 'nibs' - I have not tested for conductivity but

Yes indeed. And CD/DVD drives. And microwave ovens. Just to be on the
safe side I always make sure the final rinse is in pure, clean tap
water and make very, very, very sure it is completely dry before
switching on.

PS Helpful hint: if your bread making machine is positioned underneath
your combi boiler and you don't know that your combi boiler has sprung
a leak because all the water is dripping into the bread making
machine.....

....don't be surprised if the bread making machine goes BNAG! when you
switch it on. And that problem can't be cured by washing it under the

To be fair, that happened a couple of years ago and the combi boiler

spotted the same make and model machine [1] in the BHF shop for a

I saw a TV advert the other day: shot in black and white with a
semi-comprehensible, pretentious scenario and featuring a couple of
insufferably vain, smug, repellent people. It took about two seconds
for me to realise
a) it was an advert for some perfume or other
and
b) the "Run Up To Christmas" has started.
<sigh>

Mind you, I'm beginning to feel as though Christmas comes round about
once a month now, and breakfast every twenty minutes or so.

I have had a Panasonic bread maker for some considerable time.

The first part to fail was the plastic catch for the dispenser
tray, so I fashioned a metal replacement, which was partially
successful.

When the rather abrasive seeded mix I use eventually wore off the
coating on blade and pan, it was better value to get a complete
new unit from ebay.

When the second dispenser latch failed, I came across

<http://www.shapeways.com/model/181321/panasonic-sd253-breadmaker-dispenser-latch.html?li=productBox-search>

Which is just the job. You'd think Panasonic could have done this
themselves.

At the time I was looking, there were no parts available
separately at good prices.

It is a non-stick coating. After a while the loaf is reluctant to
pop out of the tin, and/or the paddle remains stuck in the loaf,
ripping a hole when it is finally persuaded to part company.

Funny you should mention that, the mix is the same, but I have
yet to notice degradation.

Yes, parts do seem expensive (for all sorts of things) - or just not
available. (For example: I've never seen just the hat part of a halogen

You can wash just about any keyboard. I regularly wash mine but you must
make sure it's absolutely dry (usu. 2 - 3 days on top of the desktop case
or airing cupboard). When you run water through it you should see the cr*p
that comes out!
If you live in a hard water area, the salt deposits left behind could
cause problems.

it is also waterproof! With drain holes...what do they think old
people do witha keyboard?
I have a (non-elderly) washable keyboard, and an extremely useful
beast it is. Presumably it has drain holes somewhere, but as a
smoker who regularly spills coke (liquid variety, m'lud) and
cider into keyboards, plus dog hair...well I like it. And the
keys are white!
I can remember spilling cola (so as there to beno mistake) years ago
onto a keyboard and that was a primitive one you could take apart and
wash the top bit of. I've had an Amstrad 6128 a borrowed Spectrum, and
then PCs but think it was pre-pc.

I'd been congratulating myself this morning because every day when I
walk the sog around 10.30 it stops raining and the sun comes out.
Serves me right.
I rather like the idea of a "sog" which, when walked, improves the
weather! Sounds like something which soaks up the damp, or something ...

Birthday News for today, 1 October: Robin Parkinson RIP and Chris
McMillan.
Very many happy returns of the day, Chris!
Definitely not the best weather: torrents of rain, bright sun, windy, and a
thunder storm. We did manage to get out and back for a lunch locally
though! It can jolly well improve for Saturday when we go out with the
family for lunch!
Sincerely Chris

Belated Happies from me and the Hound Sogs....
(Was that a reference to the recent UMRA coinage of sog, a wet dog?)
It was indeed. I have several carefully shaded Birthday greetings -
the best one to receive is 'Many Happies from me and the Hounds'
but the sog coinage was just above it, and I Liked It!
