I continue to be puzzled why keyboard manufacturers (both standard and
laptop) continue to make them with the symbols just in the top left
corner of the keys and small.
You can get keyboards with clearer keys; I've just looked at both ebay
and amazon, but they seem to be getting on for 30 pounds; this puzzles
me, as within the last year or three a friend bought (a new) one at a
computer fair for about a fiver, which seemed fine. He bought it for his
mother - standard size keyboard, but yellow keys with (big) black
symbols.
If you're stuck with (or want to use) a laptop, or like your present
keyboard's feel or something about it, you can get stickers: white or
yellow on black or vice versa, or black on fluorescent (but not vice
versa), for 2-3 pounds a sheet. (Make sure you check they're UK layout
if that's what you have - pound sign on the 3 and check where ~#@'"
are.) Note that despite claims they'll fit anything, they're too large
for laptop keys, and you'll either have to trim them or have them
overhang towards the back.
I'm OK on eyesight so far, but do often work in low light, so wanted the
bigger symbols. If I'd been using a normal separable keyboard, I'd have
been tempted by the illuminated ones - there are lots of options, and
I'd obviously have gone for one of the ones where the light actually
comes through the keys through a symbol shape, not just between the
keys.
