Tired of hearing about the London Olympics from the media year in year out for years?

Then this might be to your benefit. There never was any opportunity
for Londoners to say no to the Olympics, it was a done deal from the
very start.

"There are now fewer than seven months before the shenanigans hit
town, with each day bringing more news about runaway finances,
contaminated topsoil, privatised housing, militarised neighbourhoods,
losses of basic liberty, corruption, undemocratic planning decisions…

While the bigwigs are gaining billions, just what do the rest of us
lose?

This will be a day-long opportunity to investigate and interrogate all
aspects of Olympic theft, debt, repression, pollution,
corporatisation, sponsorship, displacement, and lack of community
consultation.

28 January 2012, 10.30am – 5pm
Toynbee Hall, Commercial Road, London E1 6LS

From NOGOE and Save Wanstead Flats to Vancouver and Athens, a range of
local, national and international activist groups will share their
stories. Then it’s up to us all to create the mass mobilisation needed
to expose these Olympic-sized lies!

Whether you’re an avid organiser or new to the game, now is the time
to get involved.

Lunch will be available on the day at low cost .
Further information can be found at our CONference info blog.
Please email ***@yahoo.co.uk with any questions about the
CONference and to let us know if you are coming.
See counterolympics.com and gamesmonitor.org.uk for more info about
challenging the Olympics."

Tired? I am absolutely fed up to the back teeth with it. And you ain't
seen nuffink yet! The Olympics aficionados are just warming up. As we
get nearer and nearer to the actual event there will be so much
wall-to-wall repetitive broadcasting that we will ALL get fed up to
the back teeth, even plenty of those aficionados. It must be ten times
worse for people living in London who are partially funding this
jamboree.

You sound like a right ol misery. The Olympics is the greatest show on
Earth, you should be proud and embrace it. It will probably never be
held in this country again in your lifetime.
While you moan, millions derive great pleasure from it and gives many
youngsters a goal to go for, a dream.

I don't see why these sports fanatics should be given priority over my
interests. Its all about money and business of course, plus the usual
jingoism associated with sports. I also don't understand why sports
should enjoy a special reserved place among general news reporting.
What about the plethora of other interests that the general population
has?

Sports are an easy ride too for the media too, which is obviously
short of other news items they are allowed to use.

Well it so happens that one of my main interests is general news
reporting from around the world, which I assume is shared by many. So
why should so much of this news time, for years and years, be taken up
by the Olympics, about which none of us, especially Londoners, have
ever had any say in the matter? Of course, this is on top of other
sports news which infests the media.

Funny, I haven't seen much of that on the Indymedia site. Maybe "the media"
tailors its output to interest the majority of their viewers, rather
selfishly. They ought to be out canvassing sad and bitter old twats who live
in housing-benefit hovels in Catford.

Well in this country:

Major League Baseball

Japanese Professional Baseball

NBA Basketball

NHL Hockey

NFL American football

Australian rules football

All of which have ticket sales and TV viewing figures athletics can
only dream off.

Then again, my local athletics club dreams of gaining a tenth the
membership of the local angling society.

No one will get rich by putting the Olympics on pay-per-view.

Fishing
Football and athletics, etc., enjoy their own special TV programmes,
which dominate the BBC at weekends, so why should a special place be
reserved for 'Sports' in general TV news broadcasts and be inflicted
on many who just aren't interested in watching people chasing each
other around fields and tracks? I always switch over when sports comes
on but sometimes its wall-to-wall and there is no escape, even on
foreign TV news broadcasts.

Interesting you quote fishing, this has quite a large following, has
its own TV programmes and yet never figures in general TV news
broadcasts.

They could have had an even better dream if deprived areas of Britain
had been chosen for the venue. Instead, it's a big and exorbitant

What, as opposed to building the Olympic Park at Stratford you mean? You
really are ignorant.

"Why was Stratford chosen as the Olympic venue?

Stratford in the London Borough of Newham, East London, is one of the
capital's most diverse and economically deprived areas (the 11th most in the
UK). However, in terms of facilitating the Olympics, the area has the twin
advantages of sizeable available brownfield sites for redevelopment, as well
as the green spaces of the Lower Lea Valley, and a major transport hub in
the form of Stratford International Station, which will open in 2010 and
will provide services to both Paris/Brussels via Eurostar. 'Olympic Javelin'
trains will serve the station from London St Pancras also. The Olympic Park
at Stratford will contain the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Hockey
Centre and Velopark, as well as the Olympic Village itself. In addition to
Stratford, certain events will take place elsewhere in the capital, such as
the Greenwich Millennium Dome for gymnastics, Wembley Stadium for football
and Horse Guards Parade in central London for beach volleyball. The Olympic
Park will be adjacent to the £4bn Stratford City mixed-use development,
which was planned before the 2012 bid as a means to regenerate the area. "

Yeah, one of the CAPITAL's most deprived areas, maybe, but I'd rather
see money being lavished like that on the North for a change, or maybe
far down in the west country and Cornwall. London as ever gets far
more than its fair share due to the centralised British model where
everything is London-centric.

Some of the green spaces which have been wrecked were important

The dream being to be a member of the IOC and get a fortune in bribes
and prostitutes.

The greatest show on Earth is the World Cup.
I'm not at all sure about that. I suspect that your impression may
well be a tad ethnocentric.

Then this might be to your benefit. There never was any opportunity
for Londoners to say no to the Olympics,
Of course we didn't have a choice. It is merely a method for some people
to get rich at the taxpayers' expense. This is news?

Then this might be to your benefit. There never was any opportunity
for Londoners to say no to the Olympics, it was a done deal from the
very start.
"There are now fewer than seven months before the shenanigans hit
town, with each day bringing more news about runaway finances,
contaminated topsoil, privatised housing, militarised neighbourhoods,
losses of basic liberty, corruption, undemocratic planning decisions…
While the bigwigs are gaining billions, just what do the rest of us
lose?
This will be a day-long opportunity to investigate and interrogate all
aspects of Olympic theft, debt, repression, pollution,
corporatisation, sponsorship, displacement, and lack of community
consultation.
28 January 2012, 10.30am – 5pm
Toynbee Hall, Commercial Road, London E1 6LS
From NOGOE and Save Wanstead Flats to Vancouver and Athens, a range of
local, national and international activist groups will share their
stories. Then it’s up to us all to create the mass mobilisation needed
to expose these Olympic-sized lies!
Whether you’re an avid organiser or new to the game, now is the time
to get involved.
Lunch will be available on the day at low cost .
Further information can be found at our CONference info blog.
CONference and to let us know if you are coming.
See counterolympics.com and gamesmonitor.org.uk for more info about
challenging the Olympics."
For once, I actually sympathize with Londoners. They are having these
"games" (with massive costs which havent been made public) foisted
upon them. While the novelty of watching runners run around the track
and get a medal around their neck, what about the cost of the
inconvenience to the normal Londoners life? It's far too cramped down
there as it is and I hear of special lanes in the road transport
system specifically for the Olympics but this means that the rest of
the traffic will be delayed/upheld at their own expense.
London, at best, is a far overcrowded city not designed for the
population that is crammed into it like sardines. Gawd knows what it's
going to be like when the Games are on.

Exactly, which is why I would be supporting the Olympics if they'd
gone to a truly deprived area like the North East. Instead, I expect
London will be gridlocked for several weeks during the summer, and
Londoners will be ripped off left, right and centre by retailers
everywhere charging inflated prices.

That hadn't crossed my mind. So my costs will go up when London
becomes a Mecca for sports fanatics from abroad?

I am aware my travel will become much more limited and my TV and radio
will be plastered with all things sports and me becoming a virtual
recluse for the period of the games. What I am not prepared for though
is the jingoistic inquest following the games, which could run on for
years and years too regardless of outcome.

How can this hell be happening?
