How to post replies here properly

I'm wondering how I should be posting replies here in the proper manner,
I'm new as of 7-17-07. I am a subscriber with LinuxQuestions.org and I
want to broaden my knowledge of Fedora so here I am.
I use Pine and I tried copying the subject to the subject header prepended
with "Re:" and it showed up in the list under the appropriate subject but
it had "<Possible follow-ups>" above it and the reply doesn't show up at
the bottom of the thread. Thanks ahead of time.

Surely just hit 'R' to reply to the message? You should not
even need 'reply all' as fedora-list appears to set the reply-to.
It sounds like you're composing your emails as new and
giving them the corresponding subject; this loses the
in-reply-to message header which mailreaders (and list
archives) use for threading.

As a previous poster said, the best way to reply to a email is to
properly reply to it - In the sense of hit the reply button of your
favourite email reader.

If you want to do this via the web then maybe there is a better web site
you can use that lets you reply ? I don't use it myself but a lot of
people on the list seem to use gmail (at least it comes up quite
frequently).

First, use an internet based email server that supports IMAP, or at
least supports POP3 with the option to leave messages on the server.
There are a diminishing number of ISPs that would support an active
mailing list such as this one. You will have to ask your ISP for advice
there.

To read the list use a threaded email reader, such as thunderbird.

There is no good way to 'enter into' an existing thread unless you are
reading it with a mail reader.

Lots of folks read the list via a web browser, and thats a good thing.
However, in order to actively participate, it really requires that you
follow along in a mail reader instead. Otherwise, the best you can do
is start a topic.

For those that have more bandwidth, and are willing to allow inbound
smtp to a system that is managed properly, the process is a dream.

Use procmail to organize your mailing lists into different mailboxes.
Then using an IMAP server, and an IMAP client, it is possible to
subscribe to these other mail boxes. Makes it nice.

Incorrect. You can sign up on Nabble [1]. Once you do, subscribe to
fedora-list through their interface, and turn off mailing list
delivery. This way, all mailing list posts will go only to nabble and
not to your personal email address. Nabble allows you to reply to
mailing list posts online, and get notifications of replies to your
mailbox as well, if you so choose.

I do not work for nabble and I am not associated with them in any way
(other than as a user...)

Incorrect. You can sign up on Nabble [1]. Once you do, subscribe to
fedora-list through their interface, and turn off mailing list
delivery. This way, all mailing list posts will go only to nabble and
not to your personal email address. Nabble allows you to reply to
mailing list posts online, and get notifications of replies to your
mailbox as well, if you so choose.

Is Gmail usable over your connection? I point my
subscription to Gmail and tell it to put all Fedora-list
mails in a folder. Then I can use their interface to
pick and choose which conversations to look at.

(I do have Thunderbird set up to get mails from Gmail
too, but only headers, the bodies aren't downloaded
until I ask for them. That might still be quite slow over
dialup though.)

Do not top post. Many of us here read loads of posts per day and
follow many topics. We have no time to keep the context in our heads.
Quote what is necessary and trim the rest _including_ signatures. I
delete threads where people top post.

As has been stated before, there is no need to do that. The fedora
lists have the reply-to set and modern e-mail software know how to use
this.

That .sig is 7 lines long, 3 more than is necessary. Plus it does not
have the correct .sig seperator - 2dashes (-ve sign) a space and hard

Another alternative is to use the pan newsreader.

yum install pan

Run pan from Internet -> pan newsreader

Go to Edit -> Edit newsservers

Add news.gmane.org, the rest of the defaults should be OK.

Now go to the group pane. Click on Other Groups. Then in the little
box in the upper left that has group name in gray, type gmane to see
all the gmane groups or gmane.linux.redhat.fedor.general to see only
this group.

Click on the name, and a dialog box will come up. Accept the default
by hitting enter.

You will now be in the header pane with a threaded list of all the
emails from this list. All of the pan newsreader commands are now
available to read them.

If you want to reply to a posting/email, click Post -> Reply to author
in mail. That will bring up a separate window for pan with
For users of Fedora <fedora-list at redhat.com>
in the Mail to field.

Now it is just sending an email. Actually this is a test of it all as
I haven't used it before. If this shows up on the list, the above
method works. :-)

When I clicked post article in the pan article window, it launched my
default mail client and put the message in it.

And, as I suspected might happen, the To address failed. I was hoping
the client was smart enough to parse it, but it isn't. So you'll have
to edit the extraneous garbage out of the To address, then send.
i.e. Delete the "For users of Fedora <" and the trailing ">" leaving
only fedora-list at redhat.com

Maybe there is a way to set up pan to do this for you when sending to
a mail client.

This method is of course applicable to any newsreader software you
might prefer allowing for different setup. Newsreaders are time tested
for dealing with high volume groups.

As has been stated before, there is no need to do that. The fedora
lists have the reply-to set and modern e-mail software know how to use
this.

That .sig is 7 lines long, 3 more than is necessary. Plus it does not
have the correct .sig seperator - 2dashes (-ve sign) a space and hard
return. Please set yours up properly.

I'm wondering how I should be posting replies here in the proper
manner, I'm new as of 7-17-07. I am a subscriber with
LinuxQuestions.org and I want to broaden my knowledge of Fedora so
here I am. I use Pine and I tried copying the subject to the subject
header prepended with "Re:" and it showed up in the list under the
appropriate subject but it had "<Possible follow-ups>" above it and
the reply doesn't show up at the bottom of the thread. Thanks ahead
of time.

Another alternative is to use the pan newsreader.

yum install pan

Run pan from Internet -> pan newsreader

Go to Edit -> Edit newsservers

Add news.gmane.org, the rest of the defaults should be OK.

Now go to the group pane. Click on Other Groups. Then in the little
box in the upper left that has group name in gray, type gmane to see
all the gmane groups or gmane.linux.redhat.fedor.general to see only
this group.

Click on the name, and a dialog box will come up. Accept the default
by hitting enter.

You will now be in the header pane with a threaded list of all the
emails from this list. All of the pan newsreader commands are now
available to read them.

If you want to reply to a posting/email, click Post -> Reply to author
in mail. That will bring up a separate window for pan with
For users of Fedora <fedora-list at redhat.com>
in the Mail to field.

Now it is just sending an email. Actually this is a test of it all as
I haven't used it before. If this shows up on the list, the above
method works. :-)

When I clicked post article in the pan article window, it launched my
default mail client and put the message in it.

And, as I suspected might happen, the To address failed. I was hoping
the client was smart enough to parse it, but it isn't. So you'll have
to edit the extraneous garbage out of the To address, then send.
i.e. Delete the "For users of Fedora <" and the trailing ">" leaving
only fedora-list at redhat.com

Maybe there is a way to set up pan to do this for you when sending to
a mail client.

This method is of course applicable to any newsreader software you
might prefer allowing for different setup. Newsreaders are time tested
for dealing with high volume groups.
