Temperatures were 5°C+ higher in 1947 according to newspapers and weather
records.

"From July 27 to August 5: a truly Saharan heat invades the whole country
- the days of July 27 and 28 are historic with temperatures of 40° in
Angoulême, Toulouse, Bourges, Angers, Tours, Château-Chinon, Orléans,
Chartres and Paris (absolute record since 1873), 41° in Poitiers - the
insolations are very numerous and the ice merchants for refrigerators are
assaulted - on August 1st, it is still 40° in Toulouse, Pau and
Montélimar, 39° in Angers and Poitiers, 38° in Bourges, Limoges and
Clermont Ferrand."

Examples, Paris-Montsouris
July 22 1947 33.4°C (+8.2 above average), July 28. 40.4°C (+15.2°C above
average).

Maybe they'll get a haboob this year. That would get Froome taking some hits from his inhaler.

If you don't like 1947, try 1923:

"From July 5. to July 15. : major heat wave - temperatures exceed 35°C on
almost all France. 38°C are observed at Rouen, 39°C at Saint-Quentin, and
40.5°C at Lezay [Near Poitier east of Noirmoutier]. Violent thunderstorms
kill two persons."

montsouris.html
July 13. 1923 Paris-Montsouris +9.1°C above average

Journalists have short memories. July is a hot month.

Now that half the peloton is wheezing from asthma race officials need to add 3 new jerseys:

The former glacial valley stage. (Jersey looks like a pile of gravel and goes to who ever makes it across the glacial bed first.)

The dust storm. (Jersey depicts an inhaler and goes to who ever inhales the most dirt.)

The epic flood. (Blue jersey goes to the first to get across a washed out road.)

A couple of shocking ones since: - Ouargla, Algeria: 51.3 ?C (124.3F),
probably the highest temperature ever reliably measured in Algeria and all
of Africa - and in Northern Siberia, temperatures were more than 22?C above
normal last Friday, with highs around 32-35 ?C (90-95F)

BMX is the only bike for meth heads. The moment of inertia of 20" wheels allows for quick acceleration which is more important than high end speed in the alley. Low maintenance, no gears to snarl up it even works more or less with deflated tires, yet it's still faster than any cop on foot. It can be tossed over a high wall or fence for later retrieval.

One local who regularly disappears for six months at a time was actually riding one out in the desert which is rare. Usually the cops give up after driving around the block a few times.

You should have been there in 2003 -- +2C on even 1948.

Of course daily max temps is more relevant to cyclists than puny daily avgs.

YY.MM Daily max rel 1950-80 baseline
(deg C)
2003.62 5.608
2007.29 4.983
2011.29 4.836
2003.46 4.798
2006.54 4.702
1990.12 4.279
1983.54 4.027
1976.46 3.905
1948.21 3.794
2012.21 3.701
1911.62 3.690

Berkeley Earth

But I see the whole Med has been averaging +2 to +3 the past month.
And AGW hasn't eben started yet.
