Also, in the Thai pic "Citizen Dog", a sardine-cannery worker loses a
finger into a can. He searches Bangkok until he hears tapping from
within a sardine can. He finds a finger inside and reattaches it - but
it isn't his. Later he encounters a co-worker who has had the same
accident and done the same search with the same result. They switch,
get their fingers back and become friends. This is not the strangest
thing that happens in the movie.

that were cut off.. I hadn't seen the movie since it came out on
cable in the mid 80's, but the only part I remember is Eric Roberts

I was thinking in Die Hard 2 when Bruce Willis was fighting one of the
bad guys he bit off a couple fingers and spit them out.

In Speed Dennis Hopper played a mad bomber who mangled a hand and lost

Denzil Washington or somebody -- more of recent terrorist spin, flip,
whodoneit. It's action is totally oriented into a mindgame. Then the
obvious - The English Patient.

What's that other one, can't think of it...a gambler running with a
mob-type debt. . .too vague to recall. More in line perhaps with
these, another everybody knows - Mel Gibson's remake of the Lee Marvin
thingy, where Christopherson uses mallets on him (if not fingers,
equally well intended).

Actual footing (digital misnomers) compiled from internet scenes
smuggled out of Iraq of various cuts from Hussein's camps. Got a good
review from Bush, anyway.

Not exactly sure about Careless, a relative degree of entertainment,
but I'm nevertheless sure there's cutting fingers off, and then
there's fingers effectively being cut off. An analogy to facial
reconstructive surgery in specialized documentaries relating variously
to advancements on studies provided by courtesy of gang warfare in
L.A. or military medical training films. Not saying everyone would be
entertained, although it helps to enjoy what's being done if that's
the job. Guess it could be a potential viewed for residual
alternatives, outtakes on cases, say, were one's ass capped in some
hypothetical, gun-crazy society.

Darkman, an early Sam Raimi film, where the fingers are snipped off

Unrated. As for 'good movie', actually, it gets little love from the
IMDb crowd. I suspect that's because, 10 years ago, a priority was to
shock audiences with horrific this-could-happen-to-you realism --
whereas TURISTAS feels like a travel romp with dismemberments.

"Turistas" had a lot more style than most in that category, and I don't
think that's what the audience is looking for with those movies.

Actually, I re-watched it because it was on some list here ...so,
apparently a critic or two enjoyed its duality, anyway. But, indeed, I
can't see moviegoers shelling out $20 for a horror flick with 'style' --
which is why the new production/distribution models are welcome.

THat was the most gruesome thing I've ever seen in a movie. WHen I watched the movie with my father in the theatre in around 1978, he used the word gruesome to describe it. Since then I've always turned my head whenever I watch the movie.

In Eye of the Needle they show someone get his fingers chopped off with an ax. Eric Roberts in The Pope of Greenwich Village got his thumb cut off.

mafia, and just about any film involving
them will likely approach the subject.

One of my favorite directors, Takeshi
Kitano (Beat Takeshi), made several
really good Yakuza films. One is his
"Outrage" and another is it's sequel
"Beyond Outrage."

..."Beyond Outrage" also has the
distinction of being numbered amongst
film sequels which are better than
the original...

There was a third film released in the
franchise, only recently, but I have
yet to see it.

I remember seeing a movie on HBO at a friend's house with a mad
chef on a train chopping someone's fingers off. Sadly, I have no
idea what it was.

I'm relying on memory here, but in the Darkman (1990), the baddie
collects fingers that he cuts off with a cigar cutter. Can't remember
whether they actually have a finger cutting off scene or whether they
just show the box of cut off fingers.

I'm trying to find an old "Post WW2" movie, about an American who marries a Japanese woman, who's husband thought to be dead returns. There are fingers cut off to show respect. Does anyone remember such film?

If you don't mind a TV series: The Man in the High Castle

It's an alternative reality situation, a planet where the Axis
powers won WWII and the United States is divided between
a German occupied east and a Japanese west, with a
romulan-style "Neutral Zone" between. But it's far less of a
"What If" scenario than it is a SciFi tale, with the plot centered
on the discovery of an alternative universe were the allies
won, and the subversive newsreels coming from this other
reality.

WARNING: The series is a bit of a roller coaster. I honestly
was thinking that the final season was the best of all, only
to be disappointed by the end, though clearly YMMV.

Well worth the watching. Don't know where you can find it
other than Amazon though.
