Tip for Searching Usenet Messages
(too old to reply)

If you normally reside in Agent or Thunderbird, go to Google Groups if you
want to search for a word or words within message bodies posted in the
last 20 years (after selecting the newsgroup)
- the results, postings containing the word(s), are listed within seconds.

Agent searches take forever, and Thunderbird, it seems, only allows a search
for word(s) within thread titles.

Their archive goes back a lot farther than that - to 1981.

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Groups#Google_Groups>

I remember reading several years ago about Google observing an
anniversary of that date. It was probably in 2006 or 2011, for the
25th or 30th anniversary.

I know that Google Groups has posts of mine dating back to 1996,
which was when I started posting to Usenet.

In Thunderbird you can search subjects (thread titles) and/or
posters' names and/or posting addresses. If you download posts for
offline reading you can also search the bodies of those.

Ken, in Thunderbird, how do you search the bodies of downloaded posts, please.

Within the Search Messages dialog box there's a drop-down menu giving
the options: Subject, From, Date, Status, Age In Days, Tags.

First you download messages (bodies, in bulk) for offline
reading. That drop-down menu will then have additional options,
including "Body". Alternatively, under the same conditions, you can
use the quick filter search (above the message list).

Newsgroups have to be pre-selected for offline use.

Tools --> Account Settings --> Account Name --> Synchronization & Storage

Thanks Ken.

In the latest version of Thunderbird:

Account Settings > Synchronization & Storage > left-click on 'Select newsgroups for offline use...'
click the check-box for r.m.r-p-r.1950s > OK

As you say, this adds *body* to the Search Messages options for this newsgroup - and it works!

But, Ken, how do we, in Thunderbird, download 'old' messages going back 20+ years.

Right now, I only have messages going back to Nov 2020.

We don't. That 20 year (and more) figure that was previously
mentioned referred to Google Groups' archives. The maximum age of
posts that a newsreader can access is limited to the news server's
retention, and I don't know of any news server that has 20+ year
retention. Easynews (which I see you're using - indirectly) claims
4500+ days retention for both text and binary newsgroups. That's
about 12 1/2 years. Giganews claims 17+ years retention for text
newsgroups and Newsguy, which I use, has retention back to mid-2003,
which is about 17 1/2 years. OTOH free news servers such as aioe and
Eternal-September don't carry binary newsgroups, and have retention
that's measured in days or months. I've seen 160 days mentioned for
one of them.

The first time you open a newly subscribed newsgroup Thunderbird
displays a dialog box titled "Download headers". (This screen shot is
from Thunderbird 24.4.0. Yours might not look exactly the same.)

<Loading Image...>

I don't remember what the default number is where that screen shot
shows 2000, but I think it's 500. As you see, it can be changed. If
you selected that option and didn't check the "Mark remaining headers
as read" box you can download more headers. If you checked that box I
don't think you can download any more headers.

If youi didn't check that box, go to

Tools --> Account Settings --> Account Name --> Server Settings

and select the number of headers you want to download. Click OK, go
to the File menu, and select the "Get Next nnnn News Messages", where
"nnnn" is the number you just selected in the Server Settings.

If you did check that "Mark remaining ..." box you could try the
same process, but I don't think it will work. If it doesn't work,
here's something I e-mailed to Steve in October, 2018, after he had
asked essentially the same question.

Create a second account on your news server. Thunderbird won't
let you create multiple accounts using the same server name, but you
can use the server's IP address for the name in the second account.
Assuming that the server name for your current account is
news.newshosting.com, here's what the name portion of the account
settings would look like for both your current account and the new one.

Tools --> Account Settings --> [Account1 Name] --> Server Settings

Server Name: [_news.newshosting.com______] Port: etc.

Tools --> Account Settings --> [Account2 Name] --> Server Settings

Server Name: [_69.16.179.29______________] Port: etc.

If the server name for your current account is something
different let me know what it is and I can give you the corresponding
IP address if you don't know how to find it yourself.

Keep the current account for everyday use and use the new account
when you want to delve further back into groups' history, because the
new account won't have any of the history (posts replied to,
forwarded, flagged for future reference, etc.) you've developed in the
current account.

I looked at some of the other posts before trying to make up my mind.
It's still very hard because Doris is my absolute fave singer, and I
just adored everything she did. #1 is no problem, as it's my absolute
2. When I Fall In Love (a song I never heard when it came out, but
I've decided it's absolutely beautiful!)
Have you never heard the Nat "King" Cole version of this grerat song?

It was on the "Love Is The Thing" album (his best LP) and was only
ever an album track in the USA but Capitol here in Britain pulled it
off as a single---it became Nat's biggest UK hit #2 in 1957.

Gorgeous version that IMO leaves the Doris Day version nowhere.

Thanks, Ken, for your helpful detailed reply (to say the least).

In short, you inspired me to:

Unsubscribe from newsgroup, re-subscribe (after changing one or more settings),
download message headers (223,000+ which go back to and include July 2003).

Then download the message bodies by going to newsgroup properties >
synchronization > tick offline use box > Download (which is very slow - about
60,000 bodies a day, so will take 4 days :-)

Yes, perhaps I'm a silly-billy and should simply go to the online website
Google Groups for all searches - but I see it as a mild technical challenge and
perhaps I'll prefer to use the Thunderbird app for searches, and if Google Groups
should ever come to an end in the next ten years or so, I've got messages going
back to 2003 on my system (for whatever that's worth :-).
