There seem to be 50 or more of the Smetana cycle on Spotify. Anybody
think one stands higher than the others?

Ancerl and Kubelik, both with the CPO. Others may have better sound,
but these two are sui generis, IMO.

Unfortunately Spotify doesn't seem to have have either complete. They
do have Kubelik's versions with the Boston, Bavarian Radio and Chicago
Symphony Orchestras.

The live 1990 Kubelik is on YouTube. Dramatic, deeply emotional (he came out of retirement to conduct this Prague Spring concert) and well-played.

The same forces performed the work in Tokyo in November 1991. The
sound is far better than the 1990 performance in Prague.

I don't know how you choose among the great Ma Vlast's -
Kubelik/CPO/1990/Supraphon, Kubelik/BSO/1971/DG, Kubelik/CPO/1984/Orfeo,
Talich/CPO/1954/Supraphon.

Antoni Wit's on Naxos is awfully good.

You must be from Czechoguffawkia. <said like Kenny Bania>

My picks:
-Talich (CPO), 1939.
-Kubelík (CPO), 1990.
-Hrůša (Prague Philharmonia), 2010 http://www.jakubhrusa.com/project/smetana-ma-vlast/

So far, I'm not aware of any allegations that Smetana was part of Ma Vlast right-wing conspiracy.

I admit I had to look up Kenny Bania.

May I suggest a dark horse, which might be my very favorite- Malcolm Sargent/EMI, available used for pennies online. It's also in the Malcolm Sargent Icon box.

Thanks for the Sargent suggestion. I don’t think I’ve ever sat and listened to it. And to think, I consider myself as a Sargentophile. (As well as a Cyril Scottophile.) Pfft.

May I suggest another? Berglund/Staatskapelle Dresden/EMI (1979).
