Some of the more interesting and some of the more unfamiliar records
from this weeks list will shortly appear as mp3s in the alt.binaries.
rock-n-roll group (see seperate post for details)

This week's teasers in ELEVEN big parts :-

a) Who had the original versions on these?

1.Vaughn Monroe - Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots (RCA 6260)
2. Little Willie John - All Around The World (King 4818)
3. Harry Belafonte - Jamaica Farewell (RCA 6663)
4. Dick Lory - Cool It Baby (Dot 15496)
5. The Johnny Otis Show - Ma! He's Makin' Eyes At Me (Capitol 3800)
6. Johnny Mathis - Misty (Columbia 41483)
7. Marv Johnson - You Got What It Takes (United Artists 185)
8. The Coasters - Shoppin' For Clothes (Atco 6178)
9. Aretha Franklin - Rockabye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody (Columbia
10. Chubby Checker - Limbo Rock (Parkway 849)
11 Jan & Dean - Who Put The Bomp (Liberty 55496)**
12 The Emotions - A Story Untold (20th Fox 430)

** This is NOT the famous hit song (check the mp3) but rather an
"answer" to it. But who did that original hit? (and yes that artist
appears elsewhere in this weeks list too!)

CHEAT WARNING!!! I'm not entirely sure what the original version
really is of one of these but I've included it because I bet someone
else here does! :-)
The Four Lads - Istanbul (Columbia 40082)
In this hit The Four Lads regale us with the tale of how this famous
city in Turkey changed its name---and how these days "It's Istanbul
not...........".

Not what?

c)
Perry Como - Papa Loves Mambo (RCA 5857)
In one of Como's earliest (and biggest) hits he reprises a line from
an even earlier (and even bigger) hit.

What's the hit in question and which hit does he reprise in it?

d)
The El Dorados - Baby I Need You (Vee Jay 115)
A later record by this group lent its name to a famous R&B vocal group
fanzine of much later years. What was its title?

e)
Vaughn Monroe - Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots (RCA 6260)
What was the title of the song that was taken to #1 by Vaughn Monroe
and then was taken to #1 again almost 20 years later by another
artist? And who was that other artist?

f)
Harry Belafonte - Jamaica Farewell (RCA 6663)
In the song what famous product, that Jamaica is famous for, does
Belafonte tell us "is fine any time of year"?

g)
Dick Lory - Cool It Baby (Dot 15496)
Earlier done by another artist (see question a) above) who also
featured in it a very famous 50's movie. What movie is it?

h)
The Clovers - Down In The Alley (Atlantic 1152)
The flipside of this record based on a famous Italian melody was
previously a big hit for Tony Martin and later a massive hit (with
different lyrics and title) for Elvis Presley

What is the Clovers song titled?

i)
The Five Blobs - The Blob (Columbia 41250)
"The Five Blobs" were actually just one voice overdubbed to sound like
a group. Who is the guy (who made several records under his own name
for Columbia) who owns the voice?

And fror maximum points name the movie (with the really lurid title!)
that the original "The Blob" film with Steve McQueen originally went
out---as half of a famous double bill with---on both sides of the
Atlantic----back in 1958

j)
Roger Miller - You Don't Want My Love (RCA 7776)
Which famous MOR artist helped put Miller on the map by covering his
song and making it a hit?

k)
Chubby Checker - Limbo Rock (Parkway 849)
Checker made an appearance in a British teen movie in this same year
(1962) where he is seen performing "The Lose Your Inhibitions Twist".
Several other prominent American stars of the day also appear (Del
Shannon is one) alongside a whole slew of UK artists.

What is the movie? And what was its revised US title?

Now its that time to cross to our resident California
critic, commentator and corrector---not to mention #1 Slick Slavin fan
(so what's the thing on the MOVIE "Speed Crazy"?)----for his appraisal
of the fare on offer this week. One things for sure-----I think he
will wind up on the opposite side to me in this week's potential
"Battle Of The Blobs" discussion that may well follow in the
footsteps of the earlier "Raunchy" (Justis v Freeman)
slugfest.Personally I prefer the Five Blobs version-----that was the
one used in the movie. But he prefers the Zanies I think.

Right Norm?

This took me back with a vague memory of the kid who formed the "W"
from Walls with his thumbs and first fingers.

Was it from "The Eagle"?

Roger will know.

Actually I preferred Nielson's ice cream at the time.

Yes and "borrowed" by Leiber & Stoller for the Coasters song which is
very good in its own right. But the Boogaloo (Kent Harris) version is
GREAT! (the flipside is similarly a couple of notches higher than the
more well known version of the song too----being "Cops & Robbers"
which is good by Bo but terrific by Harris)

Ring-a-Ding Rhythm
Right on both counts---and a strange little movie that has heavy
emphasis on the really boring trad jazz craze that peculiarly gripped
the attention of listless UK teenage music fans for a year or so
around this time (whilst our US counterparts were immersed in their
much more enjoyable "doowop" revival ).

Featuring perhaps the worst ever acting performance in one of these
type of teenage movies from the completely and utterly wooden Helen
Shapiro, the movie did have several US acts to redeem it a little with
good performances from Del Shannon,Gary (U.S) Bonds and Gene Vincent
among others

Continuing our regular weekly look at some of the more memorable and
not quite so memorable records reviewed as NEW RELEASES by "Billboard
this week in......
1953 (Sep 12)
The Four Lads - Istanbul (Columbia 40082)
Well you've finally started if off with a good pop song. Used to love this when
it was out.
Post by Roger Ford
The Robins - How Would You Know (RCA 5434)
How would I know? I hate to admit it, but I hired a private eye to spy and
that's how I found out. I have a G+ copy that does play okay. I can't believe
that these were the same guys that were on Spark a year or so later. This is a
good record.
Post by Roger Ford
Jimmy Reed - High & Lonesome (Chance 1142)
I guess this was the reissue. I once had the Vee Jay issue of this on black
wax, but that was before I was collecting blues. Oh well. This is a really
good debut record.
Post by Roger Ford
The Five Willows - All Night Long (Allen 1002)
Wrong side, and I guess it's not the same as the Joe Houston song. This is
absolutely the wrong side. I once had an absolutely mint copy of "Dolores" but
got rid of it in a trade because it was so goddamn repetitive..
Post by Roger Ford
The Flames - Baby Pretty Baby (7-11 2107)
I guess Patty Ann isn't with them on this. I take it that Robert Byrd wasn't
doing the lead on this. Here's another case of being valuable doesn't make it a
good record. This kind of sucks.
Post by Roger Ford
Buster Smith - Crying In The Chapel (Meteor 5010)
Geez does this suck. Is this jazz? Got to be rare as hell, but I'd really be
hard pressed to pay anything for this unless this was the only thing I needed to
complete my Meteor collection.
Post by Roger Ford
1954 (Sep 11)
Perry Como - Papa Loves Mambo (RCA 5857)
Don't tell anybody, but I used to really like this back when.
Post by Roger Ford
The Capris - God Only Knows (Gotham 304)
Another one that sucks. This is sooo bad. Is she holding her nose or does she
have a cold?
Post by Roger Ford
The El Dorados - Baby I Need You (Vee Jay 115)
Not up to their later stuff, but not all that bad. I do have this but it's only
g+,
Post by Roger Ford
The Medallions - Buick 59 (Dootone 347)
One of the best. Grate, grate record. Can't remember when I first heard this,
but it had to be at least in the late 60s.
Post by Roger Ford
The Dodgers - You Make Me Happy (Aladdin 3259)
Never was able to get any Dodgers on Aladdin or the Yankees on Imperial or the
White Sox on Flair or even the Giants on Rhythm. Oh, this is not very good.
Post by Roger Ford
The Chimes - My Heart's Crying For You (Flair 1051)
Another of those learning records. I had a strong vg red label and a little
better black label. So, not knowing any better back then, which one do you
think I traded, yup, the red one.
Post by Roger Ford
1955 (Sep 10)
Vaughn Monroe - Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots (RCA 6260)
The male Edith Piaf. Bert Convy and the group were still the best with this.
Post by Roger Ford
Little Willie John - All Around The World (King 4818)
Don't seem to remember this one. Not the same as the Penniman version was it?
Post by Roger Ford
Sonny Fisher - Rockin' And Rollin' (Starday 207)
Geez, I seem to have this piece of junk. Why would I keep this if I hated this
stuff? I know, just to show I have different things in my collection. Starday
was probably second to sun with having so much output of this type of crap.
Actually, if you include Dixie then Starday would probably be the most prolific
(I mean horrific) producer of this kind of crap.
Post by Roger Ford
Red Prysock - Hand Clappin' (Mercury 70674)
Kind of a catchy little tune. Too bad some DJ never picked this up for a theme
song. Would have worked well.
Post by Roger Ford
The Champions - Annie Met Henry (Chart 602)
Actually have this. Cover two bases, the Annie and Henry gigs.
Post by Roger Ford
The Feathers - Love Only You (Show Time 1106)
Only have a M- copy of this. I think I like this the best of all their Showtime
stuff.
Post by Roger Ford
1956 (Sep 15)
Harry Belafonte - Jamaica Farewell (RCA 6663)
During the middle of the Calypso craze. Did you know that there was at least
one issue of one of those lyrics magazines dedicated to Calypso? I think is was
called Calypso songs. I even think I have it.
Post by Roger Ford
The Dells - Oh What A Nite (Vee Jay 204)
Their classic. What can you say about this?
Post by Roger Ford
Sonee West - Rock-Ola Ruby (Nor-Va-Jak 1956)
You just had to do this, didn't you? How can I put this one down? I know, if
somebody were to like this kind of stuff it would be in the top ten of all RAB
records. As I said last week, Dick Bass found about 13 mint unplayed copies of
this in Krupps in the late 60s. I once had two of these at different times and
one was vg- and the other was a strong vg. How many have you had? :-)
Post by Roger Ford
Billy Wallace & The Bama Drifters - Burning The Wind (Mercury 70957)
Hot rod race #25? Too country for me. Put a little more Ferlin in your Husky.
And that was from???
Post by Roger Ford
Bill Flagg - Go Cat Go (Tetra 4445)
Had several chances to get this, but this really kind of sucks. Don't know why
this was considered good by anybody.
Post by Roger Ford
Dick Lory - Cool It Baby (Dot 15496)
Nah. Wasn't this done by somebody like Eddie Fontaine first in some movie like
"The Girl Can't Help It" or something like that?
Post by Roger Ford
1957 (Sep 16)
Ricky Nelson - Be Bop Baby (Imperial 5463)
I know this wasn't his debut record, but it was his debut record on this label,
and what a debut record for the new label. He and Fats made Lew Chudd rich.
Post by Roger Ford
The Johnny Otis Show - Ma! He's Makin' Eyes At Me (Capitol 3800)
I have this as a promo Capitol Pro 580 one-sided with the super-duper rare promo
insert. So there. I think I also have this as part of that 4 record set with
booklet.
Post by Roger Ford
The Clovers - Down In The Alley (Atlantic 1152)
One of my favorites by them. There's only one way anybody can answer your
teaser and that's if they have the 45, so with that here's the flip
side....There's no tomorrow.
Post by Roger Ford
The Moonglows - The Beating Of My Heart (Chess 1669)
This isn't the same song as the Charmers on Central is it? I don't like this
version.
Post by Roger Ford
The Rob-Roys - Tell Me Why (Back Beat 501)
One of the best. Grate, grate, grate record.
Post by Roger Ford
Frankie Lee Sims - Walking With Frankie (Ace 527)
No tanks.
Post by Roger Ford
1958 (Sep 15)
The Five Blobs - The Blob (Columbia 41250)
This is a real K"nee" jerker. Me thnks I answered your teaser somewhere in
here.
Post by Roger Ford
The Zanies - The Blob (Era 1080)
The other might have been from the movie, but this is the only one played around
our parts and the only one that really matters. This is so much better than the
other one above. The other is too tame, this one has a little oomph to it.
Post by Roger Ford
The Fascinators - Chapel Bells (Capitol 4053)
Good record and I guess good enough for Capitol to reissue it with a different #
a year or so later.
Post by Roger Ford
Jesse James - Red Hot Rockin' Blues (Kent 314)
Kind of a strange one for the Biharis. Not bad. Didn't have any connection to
Lee Denson, did it? Some people consider the flip as the side.
Post by Roger Ford
Slick Slavin - Speed Crazy (Imperial 5540)
Always liked this one. Have had a near mint copy for a zillion years. And so
who was Slck Slavin in real life? I don't know.
Post by Roger Ford
The Temptations - Don't You Know (Savoy 1550)
This sucks and is very irritating. Would have expected something like this on
Apt not Savoy.
Post by Roger Ford
1959 (Sep 14)
Johnny Mathis - Misty (Columbia 41483)
Kind of liked this back then.
Post by Roger Ford
Marv Johnson - You Got What It Takes (United Artists 185)
Just loved this back then
Post by Roger Ford
Jerry Norell - The Comic Book Hop (Brunswick 55148)
Always wanted to hear this. Now that I've heard it all I can say is thank you.
Not all that good. This is a take off on another record that I just can't
figure out.
Post by Roger Ford
The Shamans - Valley Of Tears (Kayham 1)
Gee, I actually have a so so copy of this. Okay, but nothing great.
Post by Roger Ford
The Jades - Walking All Alone Nau-Voo 807)
This isn't bad. Strange for there being something other than country or RAB on
the label.
Post by Roger Ford
The Daylighters - You're Breaking My Heart (Bea & Baby 103)
And let's cha cha around the room. Okay, but not great.
Post by Roger Ford
1960 (Sep 12)
Ray Charles - Them That Got (ABC-Paramount 10141)
Okay but not one of his best.
Post by Roger Ford
Barry Mann - Warpaint (ABC-Paramount 10143)
Good thing that they didn't drop him after this piece of junk. Why?... We never
would of had one of the most answered records of all time.
Post by Roger Ford
Lolita - Sailor (Kapp 349)
No thanks.
Post by Roger Ford
Roger Miller - You Don't Want My Love (RCA 7776)
The hit was by the guy that gave Little Donny Osmond his big break.
Post by Roger Ford
The Coasters - Shoppin' For Clothes (Atco 6178)
Never was one of my favorites by them.
Post by Roger Ford
Slim Harpo - What A Dream (Excello 2184)
Never heard this before. Not all that bad.
Post by Roger Ford
1961 (Sep 11)
Jerry Butler - Moon River (Vee Jay 405)
Okay, I guess.
Post by Roger Ford
Aretha Franklin - Rockabye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody (Columbia 42157)
We called her Urethra Franklin.
Post by Roger Ford
Buddy Knox - All By Myself (Liberty 55366)
Nothing special.
Post by Roger Ford
Sandy Nelson - Let There De Drums (Imperial 5775)
Really liked this one back then.
Post by Roger Ford
The Shirelles - Big John (Scepter 1223)
Can't remember. Had to do with JFK?
Post by Roger Ford
Sleepy King - Pushin' Your Luck (Joy 257)
No tanks.
Post by Roger Ford
1962 (Sep 15)
Chubby Checker - Limbo Rock (Parkway 849)
The easy way you threw out your back back then.
Post by Roger Ford
Duane Eddy - (Dance With The) Guitar Man (RCA 8087)
He really went down hill when he moved to RCA.
Post by Roger Ford
Jan & Dean - Who Put The Bomp (Liberty 55496)
One of my favorite answer records. The same song as the "Were the Guys" answer
by Bob and Jerry. I really don't know who was first. Probably the Bob and
Jerry.
Post by Roger Ford
Arthur Alexander - Anna (Go To Him) (Dot 16387)
The original to the Beatles. There was a "Married with children" show where Ed
was trying to find a copy of this version for most of the show.
Post by Roger Ford
LaBrenda Ben & The Beljeans - Camel Walk (Gordy 7009)
No tanks. Thanks for posting it though.
Post by Roger Ford
The Tams - Untie Me (Arlen 711)
Actually have a near mint copy of this. I guess his wrists were getting sore
after the bondage segment.
Post by Roger Ford
1963 (Sep 14)
Tommy Roe - Everybody (ABC-Paramount 10478)
Just loved this back then. Wore it out on my car record player.
Post by Roger Ford
Lesley Gore - She's A Fool (Mercury 72180)
One of her better ones.
Post by Roger Ford
The Orlons - Crossfire (Cameo 273)
Always liked this one.
Post by Roger Ford
Sonny Curtis - So Used To Loving You (Dimension 1017)
The ex-Cricket that hadn't wanted to become a Beatle yet.
Post by Roger Ford
The Royalettes - Blue Summer (Chancellor 1140)
Don't know it and don't think I want to.
Post by Roger Ford
The Emotions - A Story Untold (20th Fox 430)
Kind of a fun uptempo song. One of those types that I call "marching songs"
"here I stand" by the Rip Chords is another in that style.
Post by Roger Ford
Yes,I know some sides as listed may not be the "top sides" as we know
them but they are the sides BB chose to review.
Some of the more interesting and some of the more unfamiliar records
from this weeks list will shortly appear as mp3s in the alt.binaries.
rock-n-roll group (see seperate post for details)
This week's teasers in ELEVEN big parts :-

Post by Roger Ford
Vaughn Monroe - Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots (RCA 6260)
What was the title of the song that was taken to #1 by Vaughn Monroe
and then was taken to #1 again almost 20 years later by another
artist? And who was that other artist?
"There. I've said it again" Some guy on Epic.
Post by Roger Ford
Right Norm?
ZANIES, ZANIES. ZANIES.

And now for some requests:

Imperial 5252; Flair 1015
Herald 435; Columbia 40288; Vee Jay 113
Coral 61502; Cash 1014
Beech 713; Ember 1007
Dot 15644; Flip 323
Brunswick 55094; Ember 1041;Vesta 102; Big Top 3004 (can make a great 2-part
teaser)
Laurie 3038; Renown 110; Dwain 803 (a must and the fast side only)

And now back to the guy that really thinks Bernie's version is better and also
only thinks about the Five Discs when his back goes out.

Here's Rog.

Used to love this when
it was out.
Song was very popular over here too with several local versions. The
biggest hit was by Frankie Vaughan but I liked the Four Lads best
which got its share of radio play too
Post by Norm Katuna
Post by Roger Ford
The Robins - How Would You Know (RCA 5434)
How would I know? I hate to admit it, but I hired a private eye to spy and
that's how I found out. I have a G+ copy that does play okay. I can't believe
that these were the same guys that were on Spark a year or so later. This is a
good record.
My favorite by them on RCA
Post by Norm Katuna
Post by Roger Ford
Jimmy Reed - High & Lonesome (Chance 1142)
I guess this was the reissue. I once had the Vee Jay issue of this on black
wax, but that was before I was collecting blues. Oh well. This is a really
good debut record.
Think the Chance was pressed before the Vee Jay release

Post by Roger Ford
The Five Willows - All Night Long (Allen 1002)
Wrong side, and I guess it's not the same as the Joe Houston song. This is
absolutely the wrong side. I once had an absolutely mint copy of "Dolores" but
got rid of it in a trade because it was so goddamn repetitive..
Very good double sider---"Delores" is real good but BB got it right in
giving the edge to the even better "All Night Long"---as I do too----
so how is it the wrong side?
Post by Norm Katuna
Post by Roger Ford
Buster Smith - Crying In The Chapel (Meteor 5010)
Geez does this suck. Is this jazz? Got to be rare as hell, but I'd really be
hard pressed to pay anything for this unless this was the only thing I needed to
complete my Meteor collection.
Song does'nt really work as an instrumental but I guess if you HAVE to
hear it that way then there could be a lot worse versions than this. I
tell you one thing---hearing all these versions of the song at once
makes you realize that whilst The Orioles version is always safe,Elvis
did'nt do too bad a job on the song at all!
Post by Norm Katuna
Post by Roger Ford
1954 (Sep 11)
Perry Como - Papa Loves Mambo (RCA 5857)
Don't tell anybody, but I used to really like this back when.
I liked it way back when too---and I still like it now.
Post by Norm Katuna
Post by Roger Ford
The Capris - God Only Knows (Gotham 304)
Another one that sucks. This is sooo bad. Is she holding her nose or does she
have a cold?
I can't agree. I kinda like this one tho I admit its one that did take
a while to grow on me.

Post by Roger Ford
The Medallions - Buick 59 (Dootone 347)
One of the best. Grate, grate record. Can't remember when I first heard this,
but it had to be at least in the late 60s.
Terrific number that I don't think I heard till I started coming to
the USA and got exposed to tons of this stuff via the access I had to
the stock at Val's store
Post by Norm Katuna
Post by Roger Ford
The Dodgers - You Make Me Happy (Aladdin 3259)
Never was able to get any Dodgers on Aladdin or the Yankees on Imperial or the
White Sox on Flair or even the Giants on Rhythm. Oh, this is not very good.
Amazingly this was released here---but not until 1960----on a weird
short lived "Downbeat" label whose entire output came from US Aladdin
-----and included Louis Jordan and Richard Lewis
Post by Norm Katuna
Post by Roger Ford
1955 (Sep 10)
Vaughn Monroe - Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots (RCA 6260)
The male Edith Piaf. Bert Convy and the group were still the best with this.
I really do hate this song and yes that includes the Cheers version
too!

Was'nt it you that had the sheet music to this Monroe effort?

And I'm still waiting to hear the flipside "All By Myself" which I'm
guessing is probably the Domino song. The mind boggles!
Post by Norm Katuna
Post by Roger Ford
Little Willie John - All Around The World (King 4818)
Don't seem to remember this one. Not the same as the Penniman version was it?
Nope different song. Nobody has answered the teaser yet but its the
song that was originally by Titus Turner

If we forget quality and just go by volume then I'd probably agree
that Starday (including DIxie and including the Mercury-Starday
issues) came up with the biggest percentage of released RAB

Yes IIRC it came out over here too.

The Dells - Oh What A Nite (Vee Jay 204)

Only that its GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAT!!!

And I'd add that the 60's remake by them of the song is terrific too

You just had to do this, didn't you? How can I put this one down? I know, if
somebody were to like this kind of stuff it would be in the top ten of all RAB

this in Krupps in the late 60s. I once had two of these at different times and
one was vg- and the other was a strong vg. How many have you had? :-)
It's not bad but nowhere near my Top 10 RAB numbers. Why is his name
"Sonee" here? Simple typo on the label or what?

Billy Wallace & The Bama Drifters - Burning The Wind (Mercury 70957)
Hot rod race #25? Too country for me. Put a little more Ferlin in your Husky.
And that was from???
I think you mean John & Marsha's famous "A Dear Stan Freberg Letter"
----except that I don't think he actually says that :-)

So away back to the record player with you and check what Stanley
REALLY says!!
Post by Norm Katuna
Bill Flagg - Go Cat Go (Tetra 4445)
Had several chances to get this, but this really kind of sucks. Don't know why
this was considered good by anybody.
Was'nt Tetra a New York label? So how come they had a drawling
Southern rockabilly wannabee like Flagg on their books??

Post by Roger Ford
Dick Lory - Cool It Baby (Dot 15496)
Nah. Wasn't this done by somebody like Eddie Fontaine first in some movie like
"The Girl Can't Help It" or something like that?
Yep and I still smile at that bit in Fontaine's act in "The Girl Can't
Help It" where he has a wild moment during his "Cool It Baby"
rendering----------and knocks stuff off Ewell & Mansfield's table.

Probably not in the script.

1957 (Sep 16)
Ricky Nelson - Be Bop Baby (Imperial 5463)
I know this wasn't his debut record, but it was his debut record on this label,
and what a debut record for the new label. He and Fats made Lew Chudd rich.
To be fair Chudd helped make THEM rich too!

#1 (on some charts) here in the UK without even denting the Billboard

One of my favorites by them. There's only one way anybody can answer your

"There's No Tommorrow" is among my least favorite Clovers numbers on

I love this one----I was familiar in the 60's with the Belmonts
version of course but never caught up with this original version, again
until I encountered Val's stock in '71

Frankie Lee Sims - Walking With Frankie (Ace 527)

stomper on Ace

BERNIE'D your bridges on this one! (Hey! Did I mention this is easily
the best version?)

"Oomph??

This record wouldn't "oomph" if you put four million volts through it!

It's bleeding demised!!

It has ceased to be!!

It has expired and gone to meet its maker!!

It's a stiff!

Bereft of life it rests in peace!!"

The Fascinators - Chapel Bells (Capitol 4053)
Good record and I guess good enough for Capitol to reissue it with a different #
a year or so later.
And good enough for Capitol to also issue it over here (as they also
did with the even better "Oh Rose Marie"----but we never got the other
one by the group)

Jesse James - Red Hot Rockin' Blues (Kent 314)
Kind of a strange one for the Biharis. Not bad. Didn't have any connection to

Both sides are really good. I always had this earmarked as issued by
another label first before Kent but never turned up any info to
substantiate that

So who were your youthful comic book heroes?

For me,from Britain it had to be Dan Dare Pilot Of The Future in
"Eagle"----the best 50's sci-fi strip of them all!!

And from the USA I really liked DC's Green Lantern character.Quite
interesting in spite of being heavily based on Superman (as most of
these guys were) with the color yellow being his Achilles heel---and
therefore his own personal version of kryptonite

Barry Mann - Warpaint (ABC-Paramount 10143)
Good thing that they didn't drop him after this piece of junk. Why?... We never
would of had one of the most answered records of all time.
Did'nt do a thing in the USA but British fans here (or those familiar
with the UK charts) will recognize this song as the original of the
hit that our local Brook Brothers took into the best sellers.

And yes,you guessed it---the Brook Brothers were a UK duo modelled
heavily on the Everly Brothers but with only a fraction of the talent
-----and none of the harmony

No thanks.
Another US hit that was taken high into the charts here---this time by
a very pre-"Downtown" Petula Clark

Roger Miller - You Don't Want My Love (RCA 7776)
The hit was by the guy that gave Little Donny Osmond his big break.
I always watched his show when Jonathan Winters was on (which was very
often). That guy was a riot!

Jerry Butler - Moon River (Vee Jay 405)
Okay, I guess.
Its burning at the stake time----for I hold the heretical idea that
the Mancini version is better than this Butler version which, whilst
good (how could ANY version of such a great song not be good?) is
sadly over rated

He really went down hill when he moved to RCA.
No,I liked the first two.

"Deep In The Heart Of Texas" was'nt bad---follows on from the kind of
thing he was doing on Jamie. And "The Ballad Of Paladin" was a really
good Eddy performance. One of the very best EVER TV themes.Probably in
my Top 10 by him. Certainly the best thing he EVER did on RCA

But I agree it was all downhill from there---especially with the
unwelcome addition of those f***ing Rebelettes

The original to the Beatles. There was a "Married with children" show where Ed

The Clovers - Down In The Alley (Atlantic 1152)
One of my favorites by them. There's only one way anybody can answer your
teaser and that's if they have the 45, so with that here's the flip
side....There's no tomorrow.
"There's No Tommorrow" is among my least favorite Clovers numbers on

Ahem .... Let me disagree ...
The version of the tune about which I was raving was their LP cut and
not the more bouncy 45 version.
I have posted the 45 version to the usual group but I don't have an mp3

By any chance do you have an mp3 that you could post ?

I have the Little Willie John version and also (as I learned) the
remake by Little Milton called "Grits Ain't Groceries" (love that

And, completely off this topic though relevant to a current thread,
this morning in the car, I heard one of the worst songs I've heard in a
long time : "Daisy Petal Picking" by Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs.

Considering the next track on the cassette is Sugar Shack (which is a
pretty good tune), I just couldn't belive how bad the Daisy song was :
the lyrics ARE dreadful.....

Probably because the fact is that most on here just don't seem to rate
Turner that highly.

He was a quite prolific recording artist in the 50's and early 60's
yet has hardly any really worthwhile recordings to show for it IMO.

Certainly his awkward "All Around The World" does'nt fit the bill
since it is dwarved not only by the definitive Willie John version but
also its blown away by the 60's Little Milton "Grits Ain't Groceries"
revamp

"The Five Blobs" were actually just one voice overdubbed to sound like
a group. Who is the guy (who made several records under his own name
for Columbia) who owns the voice?
And fror maximum points name the movie (with the really lurid title!)
that the original "The Blob" film with Steve McQueen originally went
out---as half of a famous double bill with---on both sides of the
Atlantic----back in 1958
Norm reminded us it was Bernie Nee who was the lone voice behind "The
Five Blobs" on the title song from the movie---and a song that was an
early writing effort by somebody named Burt Bacharach----but forgot to
mention that the first (and easily best) version of this film in 1958
originally went out---both in the USA and over here in Britain----as
one half of a double bill with one of the most spectacularly titled
movies ever made----"I Married A Monster From Outer Space"
